Design and build a prototype for a child s toy. Identify a customer, they will provide input and feedback on the design. Finally present idea through slide show and marketing video in front of professors and peers on project testing day. Project Schedule/Hard Deadlines: Jan. 31 st Initial Brainstorming Feb. 14 th Project Proposals Feb. 20 th Revised Proposals Mar. 7 th Project Designs Apr. 4 th Project Testing Apr. 7 th Deliverables Due
Target Customer: 8-12 year old males Test customer: Bradley Balltrip s cousin, 11 year old male Selection Process We brain stormed to come up with a product that was simple to make, original in idea, entertaining for our intended audience, as well as related to physics. Based the original idea of our design off of arcade games such as skee ball and other games with the objective of shooting a ball through a goal with a point value system.
Initially, our design consisted of a board similar to the final product however the mechanism for which the ball would be launched would be a spring launcher. The spring launcher idea was formulated from the strategy of previous EF projects. Relating to arcade games, we devised a board with different sized holes with inversely proportional point values based on the size of the holes. The diameters of the holes were based on the diameter of the intended object of projection, a ping-pong ball. Conceptually, we thought to relate our product to physics through projectile motion, spring constants, and friction forces.
)Complete side view 2.) Complete front view 3.) Slingshot 1.) Inside look at return ramp sketch and dimensions 2.)Outside look at the return ramp with dimensions 1.) Front view of target board with dimensions 2.) Side (X-Ray) view of target board and ramp with dimensions
The final design consisted of a box with the holes cut out of the front for the targets for the game, a ramp to return the ball to the player, and the slingshot launcher to shoot the ball. The main box was put together with wood glue and various metal hinges to keep the front, sides, and top from falling apart. Being the main part of our product, the sturdiness of this structure was essential. The ramp was screwed onto the back portion of the box using a special hinges and screws to not only attach to the box but tp be held at the correct angle. The slingshot is unattached in order to allow for free movement and increasing of difficulty.
No slingshot Inaccurate and too hard for a children s game Jigsaw like cuts to the sides and top Added support and stability to the game

Players stand back to shoot from their preferred distance, the longer the distance the harder the difficulty of the game. The game consists of three rounds, each round the player gets 10 shots to shoot the ball in the targets. As the rounds progress the players attempt to accumulate as many points as they can. The final shot of each round is with a different colored ping pong ball, the money ball is worth double. Scores are based on the successful entry of the ball in the targets and the corresponding point values of said target. The competitor with the most points at the end of the final round is declared the winner. Make it your own!

Overall, the customer was very pleased and excited about the project. Some of the comments received were as follows: That is so cool and something I would definitely play with! When can I try it? Rated 8 or 9 out of 10 No recommended improvements
Our original estimated cost was $12 per unit, this includes cost of materials and labor. In order to make 1000 units, we found after caluclations and research the cost to be somewhere around $16,000, depending on the cost of materials on a large scale as well as the increased labor to produce that many units. In order to make a profit and cover materials and labor, we predict our product to retail at $ The total calculated man hours from the time log on OneNote is approximately 78
Overall, the project was a success. Our original design was fairly similar to the final design. In the building process, we had very few flaws or obstacles that arose. The final product was successful to the customer and relatively inexpensive to build. All team members contributed and worked well together The engineering design process was evident in the building of this product
Shoot n Sail. Why we didn t choose it: The idea was too simple. It did not have enough challenges for gamesters mentalities.
