2 Project Ideas Game Type We are focusing on a board game. Features. Marble Maze will be used as a tool in the game. Unknown specific rules yet. Multiple colored balls inside maze represent different players. Different "ends" of maze result in different outcomes for that player. All balls will be in play at once. Only one player controls the maze device at once. The player with the device can attempt to affect the other players by navigating their ball into different "ends". Physically and mentally challenging. - to be determined- intended difficulty, learning curve. Not so much a physical challenge except for the careful controlling of the maze. (balance requiredthis could go into the name or theme of game?) An hour length time to complete. Teamwork will be encouraged up to a point. As of now we only plan on having one winner, but helping other players might be a good way to help yourself. This allows for the concept of betrayal as well since it is unclear when helping another player may make them too close to winning. Customer ID -A game suitable for young adult age group. This is encouraged by increased complexity and theming. -Can be enjoyed by anyone in an older age group as well, but not target audience. We have decided to interview Joe Schmo, Engineer2's neighbor. We will ask him what are his favorite toys and why. We will ask him what he does not like about some of his toys. On 9/10/17 Joe Schmo told us 3 things that would make this a great toy 1. XXX 2. 5 November 7th 3 hours Edited Marketing video Worked on Powerpoint November 8th.5 hours Worked on final Project Notebook Project Proposal 1. Product - The toy we are going to construct will take the form of a board game consisting of a game board and a special maze device that players would use to move on the board, interact with other players, and progress towards their goals. The board would be a separate component from the maze device, although the two will be designed to work with each other in the game. Our device will be similar to marble maze, which is commonly seen as a stand alone toy. (See picture A and B for reference.) This maze-board game device will also have built in settings to reset the position of the "marbles" and multiple exits to represent the various events in the game. This toy project should have multiple, and distinctly designed, balls representing different players to introduce a new mechanic where players can intentionally or accidently affect the position of other players in the game. a. The board itself may feature its own special properties that are made to increase interaction with the maze device. Cards could be utilized to change the game's dynamics so as to encourage teamwork or even allow for a betrayal in the game. Dice will be avoided since the maze mechanic is meant to replace this common "rolling of a dice" feature thus, bringing a fresh experience for those familiar with board games.
6 2. Competing Products- The most obvious examples of competing products would be other board games with a physical component to them. Examples include Mousetrap and Trouble. (See pictures C and D.) However, while all these products use the physical aspect of the game to draw attention to the game itself, our product aims to draw an older audience by having increased complexity in regards to player interaction and teamwork. This increased complexity puts our board game into competition with more complicated strategy board games such as Settlers of Catan. 3. Value of Product- Our project will merge an old toy design into a much more complex board game. This allows older customers to enjoy playing with a toy, in a new way, without getting bored quickly and feeling silly or childish for playing with it. The simple physical nature allows customers to quickly get engrossed in the game, unlike many complex board games that take significant preparation just to figure out how to play. Hence, the value of our product is centered on physical simplicity to draw customers in and a logical complexity to will keep players engaged for a maximum of 40 minutes. 4. Market- The targeted customer groups for our product are primarily older teenagers and young adults. The market for this design is also geared towards college activities, student engagement programs, friendly socials/get-togethers. These customer groups are often interested in games that play with traditional mechanics but also have the attention required to appreciate the teamwork/betrayal dynamics our design hopes to introduce. Our product will be marketed with these groups of people in mind and will try to make the toy (the maze device) look more mature rather than being too bright and gimmicky like products marketed towards a younger audience. Prototype Design ` The design is a board game featuring a maze toy. Both the maze and the board will have their own pieces. The board will be designed to store the maze inside of it when not in use.the design will require a triangular board to serve as a the game board, a maze device that will be similar to Picture A, and multiple cards used to change play. The board will have painted spot on it that act as tiles and pathways for the players pieces to move to the exit. The maze will have painted symbols and carved out obstacles and endpoints (these endpoints would be holes where the balls could not escape similar to the holes in a pool table. This project will require something to cut out the material (3-D Printing) in order to make the desired shaped and boards. Design Documents

12 Client Feedback 3 total responses from college peers. Response #1: I think it is good in concept as to how it is played, so long as the theme of the game is mature. Response #2: It sounds like a good game to play in the household--i love game nights! Response#3: unique! Needs to be a really quick game though, and it would be perfect for organizational meetings! Response #4 from Lance Mefford (19 year old -Dormmate) It seems complicated at first, but after some explanation the confusion goes away. Maybe use the maze with only one hand I would buy it if I knew I had a lot of friends coming over. Materials List Game Board: Material: Cardboard/Wood Dimensions and Speculations: A triangular 2¼ inch tall cardboard box with dimensions of 2x2x2ft. Cost: $0-$5 (Depending on reclaimable materials) Box/Container: Material: Cardboard/Wood Dimensions and Speculations: Cardboard cover for the box about an ⅛ bigger than the board Cost:$0-$5 (Depending on reclaimable materials) Maze : Material: Plastic Dimensions and Speculations: Maze is would be 3D printed; circular 7 inch in diameter Cost: Free 3D printing provided by university Ball (Maze): Material: Wood or Plastic Dimensions and Speculations: ½ inch diameter ball for the maze Cost: $0-$2 (Depending on reclaimable materials)
13 Game Pawns: Material: Plastic Dimensions and Speculations: roughly 1 tall; game pawns would be 3D printed Cost: Free 3D printing provided by university Playing Cards: Material: Paper/Laminated Paper Dimensions and Speculations: The cards would be standard size (2x3 inches) Cost: $0-$3 (Depending on reclaimable materials) Environmental Impact Statement No major environmental impact suspected. Most of the project will be made of cardboard and could be easily recycled if disposed of. The maze toy is made of plastic, but the amount will be very small so this is not a serious environmental hazard. Schedule / Key Dates Product building and Testing would be started and completed within 2 weeks. Start date: Friday 13th October, 2017 End date: Friday 3rd November, 2017 Building would be on Friday from 9am to 4pm Purchasing of materials: Sunday 22nd October, General availability : Fridays between 1:30-4:00pm Individual typical availability: Future Engineer3 1:30pm-4pm 9am-4pm 9-12:20pm, 1:30-3pm Deadline to transfer all information into a presentation format: November, 6th 2017.
14 Brainstorming marketing video: same period as the project building period. Finalize marketing video for the product: November 6th, Cost Data Total cost to build prototype: 29$ 2 Foam boards $ Multiple colors of acrylic paint 5.00$ Wooden game pieces- 3.00$ Color Printing costs 3.00$ Total time to build prototype: 22.5 man hours Estimated cost per one mass produced unit: 9$ This is cheaper because we wasted a lot of material was wasted. We used very small quantities of the game pieces and paint and only used about a half of a foam board in actual material. If we mass produced the toy this process could be greatly improved using only what was absolutely needed and not wasting whole vials of paint and paying 3.00$ for color library printing. Estimated time to mass produce one unit: 12 man hours Even if we just used the same tools the process could be greatly improved now that we know what we are doing. (Not wasting time cutting things we didn t use. Estimated cost to produce 1000 units: $9000 Estimated time to produce 1000 units: man hours This means the product would have to be sold for at least 15$ Dollars to make a reasonable profit. More likely $20 because that is a more standard board game cost.
15 Final Prototype: Notice three separate components of maze device, triangular game board, and slidable lid.
