1 .4 PROBLEM SOLVING Money? Essential Question How can acting it out help you solve a problem about money? How can acting it out help you solve a problem about money? Lesson Opener Making Connections Invite children to tell you what they know about paying for a purchase. When you pay for something that you want to buy, what happens if you have less money than the object costs? (You can t buy it unless you get some more money.) What happens if you have more money than the object costs? (Either you use some of your coins to pay the exact amount or you pay more than the amount that the object costs, and the person selling it gives you money back.) Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Number and Operations.5.A Determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar;.5.b Use the cent symbol, dollar sign, and the decimal point to name the value of a collection of coins MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES..B Use a problem-solving model..a Apply mathematics to problems..g Display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments Are You Ready? Access Prior Knowledge Use the Are You Ready?.4 in the Assessment Guide to assess children s understanding of the prerequisite skills for this lesson. Lesson Vocabulary Go to Multimedia eglossary at thinkcentral.com Materials play coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters), MathBoard Using the Digital Lesson You may want to have coin manipulatives (play money) available for children to use in modeling their solutions. They may also choose to use the Coin Tool. Learning Task Connect the story to the problem. Can you tell whether the girl had too little money to buy the lemonade or if she had enough? (She was able to buy the lemonade, so she had enough money.) How can you find how much money the girl has? (count the coins that she has) How can you show the coins to count them? (Answers may vary; show the coins with play money or draw pictures of the coins and write the amount for each coin.) Literacy and Mathematics View the lesson opener with the children. Then, choose one or more of the following activities. Invite children to draw two different ways that they could pay for something that cost cents. Have children write a story about two friends who wanted to buy some lemonade. For the student Resources Interactive Student Edition provides students with an interactive learning environment! 2 Unlock the Problem Review coins and their values with children. After reading and discussing the problem with children, work through the Problem Solving Graphic Organizer together. What information are you given? Possible answer: Meg has quarters, dimes, nickel and pennies. She wants to buy a whistle that costs 65. What is your plan or strategy? Explain. Possible explanation: I can use coins to act out the problem. I can use the coins Meg has. It helps me see which coins she can use to buy the whistle and the coins she has left over. Have children use coins to act out the problem. Ask them to draw a picture of Meg s coins and then cross out the coins for the cost of the whistle. What coins will Meg still have after she buys the whistle? Explain how you know. Possible explanation: Meg can use quarters, dime, and nickel to make 65, the cost of the whistle. I drew an X over those coins. Then I see she still has dime and pennies. How much money will Meg have after she buys the whistle? Image Credits: Getty Images/Photodisc? Name.4 Essential Question Unlock the Problem Meg has quarters, dimes, nickel, and pennies. She wants to buy a whistle for 65. How much money will Meg have after she buys the whistle? Read What information am I given? The whistle costs 65. Meg has these coins: PROBLEM SOLVING Money quarters, dimes, nickel, pennies How can acting it out help you solve a problem about money? Solve Meg will have after she buys the whistle. HOME CONNECTION Your child used play coins to act out the problem. Representing problems with objects can be a useful strategy for children to use to solve problems. Plan Number and Operations.5.A,.5.B MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES..A,..B,..G What is my plan or strategy? 3 Try Another Problem Use coins to solve the problem. Draw to show what you did.. Natasha has quarters and 4 nickels. How much more money does she need to buy the notebook? Check children s drawings. What information am I given? What is my plan or strategy? $.00 Natasha needs 5 more to buy the notebook.. Carlos has 5 pennies, dimes, and a quarter. He wants to buy the paint. How much money will Carlos have after he buys the paint? Check children s drawings. 50 Try Another Problem Use questions to guide children through the first problem. What information are you given? Possible answer: Natasha wants to buy a notebook for a dollar. She has quarters and 4 nickels. How can acting the problem out with coins help you solve this problem? Possible answer: I can put the coins in order from greatest value to least value to help me find the total value of the coins Natasha has. Then I can use more coins to find how much more money she needs to make one dollar. Repeat with a similar discussion for the second problem. Math Talk Mathematical Processes Use Math Talk to focus on children s understanding of using a given collection of coins to show a specific amount of money. Carlos will have 0 after he buys the paint. Math Talk: Possible explanation: Natasha has quarters and 4 nickels, which have a total value of 95. The notebook costs $.00, or 00. She needs 5 more cents to make a dollar. 80 three hundred eighty Math Talk Mathematical Processes Explain how you solved Exercise. COMMON ERRORS Error Children may leave out some of the coins when finding the total value. Springboard to Learning Have children act out each money amount with play coins. Suggest that they circle the coin names and quantities in the problem and check that they have included the correct number of each type of coin. Enrich Kinesthetic / Visual, Partners Materials: play coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters) Write the following problem on the board. Four children each buy a sandwich for $.00. They each pay for their sandwich with a different collection of coins. Each child uses a different number of quarters. How could each child pay for their sandwich? Have children work with a partner to solve the problem using coins. Ask them to draw and/or list their solutions and then compare their solutions with another group. Go to Go to thinkcentral.com for additional enrichment activities in the Enrich Activity Guide. Lesson.4 80
4 Share and Show Exercise connects to the learning model. Use the checked exercise(s) for Quick Check. Quick Check Name Share and Show Use coins to solve the problem. Draw to show what you did.. Anna has nickels, 5 pennies, and quarter. Her mom gives her another coin so Anna can buy the balloon. What coin does Anna get from her mom? Check children s drawings. 55 IF THEN a child misses the checked exercise(s) Differentiate Instruction with RtI Tier Lesson 56 Problem Solving If children answered the checked exercise(s) correctly, assign the remaining exercises on this page. Problems These problems require children to use higher order thinking skills and/or multiple steps to solve. In Exercise 4, children find the amount needed to buy two apples, then determine a collection of dimes and pennies with that total value. Exercise 5 challenges children to use information about money given back as change in order to determine the cost of a toy. Go Deeper Lead an activity with children to connect money transactions with addition and subtraction. For example, ask children how they could use addition or subtraction to solve these problems: Jennie has 45 cents. She gets 5 cents more. How much money does Jennie have now? Jennie has 90 cents. She buys an orange for 50 cents. How much money does Jennie have now?
