1 Dear Campers, We can t wait to see some old faces and meet new ones this summer. FILM Camp is going to be very exciting with lots of new things to learn. Please take the time to review the plans, ideas, and technological preparations below to the best of your ability. Don t worry if you don t understand some of it, or if you can t get it all done before the first day of camp. It is just a guide, and we are here to help you every step of the way. We are just sending out this list of software apps to familiarize everyone with what we will be working with, because 15 days of camp goes by VERY quickly! Most of this information is brand new to anyone who has not made a short film before, so although there will be a lot to learn, we have the best filmmaking instructor, Humberto Adrian Perez, who has an entire career full of experience teaching media production to middle and high school students, there to guide you. Remember, we all support you, and we want to see you do your best, and we will help you to bring out your best, both in front of and behind the camera, throughout the summer camp experience. We will help you to grow as an actor, director, and filmmaker, and want you to have a lot of fun in the process! This camp will open your eyes to many things that you never knew were possible, and you very well may take the lessons learned during this 3-week session into your path to success in the rest of your academic and professional career. From all of us to you, we look forward to seeing you this summer! From, Everyone at RMCT HARDWARE: ios DEVICE The device that we will be using to do all of our filmmaking with is an ipad or other recommended ios device (next page). All students should have an ios device to bring to camp daily, and to work with at home as much as is necessary for specific projects. It is possible that we may have 1-2 extra ipads, but to have your own to do work with at night and on weekends will be a tremendous advantage to you. We realize that not everyone may own an ipad, but we wrote on the website that this was a requirement, so hopefully most of our Film students are aware. This being the case, we have found a company that leases out Apple ipads for short and longterm rentals. The price that they quoted us on individual students renting an ipad for a 3-week period of time was $85. This may differ slightly depending on shipping, additional options that you may choose, and if you want to have it for a few days before camp to begin to familiarize yourself with it, and a few days after to put your work onto your own storage device. The company is RentaComputer.com, our contact there is Jason Patrick, whose title is Technology Travel Agent / National Account Manager, and his phone number is , ext. 232, his cell phone number is , and his is jpatrick@rentacomputer.com. To explain to him what you need, you can reference the communications that we have had with him regarding a 3-week rental for our camp program, under Proposal # Please contact him as soon as possible if you are interested in renting an ipad from them, or you are welcome to use any alternate rental company that you can find. If you are aware of a company that has cheaper rates, let us know, but this was the best rate that we could find anywhere after an extensive search.

2 This handout is designed to get students ready for Rocky Mountain Conservatory Theatre FILM Camp. You will need an ios device with a few basic apps for producing a short film. ios devices include ipad, ipad Mini, iphone, and/or ipod Touch. Below you will find an extensive list of apps that can be used in the filmmaking process with an ios device. Some are free apps, and some are apps that you can purchase. It s usually not required that you purchase any apps. However, you do want to have the apps suggested below on the RECOMMENDED list installed on your ios device before you show up to the first day of camp. imovie and GarageBand are now included with your purchase of an ios device. However, if you purchased your ios device before Apple began including it with your purchase of the ios device then you may want to purchase them ($9.98 total for both). Check your device first if it is an older model to ensure that you don t already have it installed. PLEASE DO NOT BE OVERWHELMED BY ALL OF THIS INFORMATION! We will be doing the majority of the filmmaking work at the camp during the scheduled days. This includes planning, filming, editing, and other activities related to filmmaking. Some students are probably going to want to do some additional filming at home, which is okay with our Director, so parents should know that. And we will be filming in locations that are in close proximity to where camp is taking place (walking distance with supervision). Some students may want to use stop motion, and utilize lego-like figures. These students will need to bring the materials necessary to work on their stop motion film at camp, which will be discussed mid-session. Not only is this camp going to put you way ahead of the pack if you take a media/filmmaking class in middle school, high school, or college, but this list of apps is an invaluable piece of information for the modern media student. RECOMMENDED LIST OF APPS FOR FILMMAKING *Download AT LEAST these apps before Day 1 of camp, everything else is optional or will come later. (11): Evernote, Penultimate, Skitch, Celtx Cards, Paper by FiftyThree, Celtx Shots, Celtx Scout, VoiceThread, SceneScout, Recorder Plus HD, Fingertip Maestro (2): imovie ($4.99), GarageBand ($4.99) You will also want to have at least four (4) gigabytes of free space on your ios device before you show up on the 1st day. You can check to see how much free space you have on your ios device by going to Settings > General > About & then look under Available to see how much free space you have. If you do not have enough free space then you may want to connect your ios device to your computer, and move any photos, videos, and/or music to storage to free up some space. In addition, we are including a link to the iographer website, which contains gear made specifically for ios devices for the purpose of filmmaking. This gear is not required. We utilize some of this gear during Camp, and students are always asking where they can purchase this gear, because it is pretty cool and also affordable, especially the Media Cases for ios devices, which help with durability, stability, and filming on the go. It is about a $50 purchase, but totally optional. iographer website: We are looking forward to our first ever FILM Camp at Rocky Mountain Conservatory Theatre. It s going to be a wonderful engaging experience! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
