1 TALENT ACADEMY 2017 Preparation Notes for Submission and Audition in Literary Arts DSA-Secondary and DSA-Secondary (Non-MOE) Applicants Eligibility Criteria Literary Arts is the integrative discipline of literary appreciation and creative writing. Students of Literary Arts will have the opportunity to appreciate and learn the creative process behind six literary forms: short fiction, poetry, plays, novel, non-fiction and graphic novel. Applicants for Talent Academy for Literary Arts need to demonstrate a strong interest for writing and a willingness to experiment with different writing forms. They are expected to be skilled in writing and expressing themselves in English. They should also have a love for reading and a curiosity to discover more about themselves, others and the world they live in. The auditions are structured to allow candidates to express their passion for writing as well to demonstrate their potential and suitability for the SOTA Literary Arts Programme. Knowledge of and an appreciation for different writing forms would be an advantage. Applicants should have explored writing either in their primary schools, external agencies or on their own. Phase 1: Shortlisting What to submit for Literary Arts Portfolio Item Description Personal Statement / Story Task: Explain why humility (while being humble and modest) is the most important virtue among the other virtues Describe what humility means to you and how humility will impact you and others around you Personal stories about experiencing or exemplifying humility are preferred Maximum 500 words Format: Typed, 1.5 spaced, using 12 pt-arial font File Name: Full Name_LA_DSA_Personal Story (e.g. Deborah Yeo_LA_DSA_Personal Story) File Type:.pdf Maximum File Size: 2 MB 1 of 5

2 Creative Writing Portfolio (4 10 original works) Acceptable works: Completed within the last 12 months Done in primary school for the English Language subject or creative writing tasks Works produced during involvement in writing courses / workshops conducted by external agencies Works that cover a wide range of writing forms * and genres are preferred Each work should be clearly labeled as follows: Title of the work Date completed Source (eg. English Language Primary 6, Creative Writing Course conducted by XXX, personal creative writing) No word limit Format: Typed, 1.5 spaced, using 12 pt-arial font Combine all works into 1 document file File Name: Full Name_LA_DSA_Creative Writing (e.g. Deborah Yeo_LA_DSA_Creative Writing) File Type:.pdf,.doc,.docx Maximum File Size: 5 MB *Refers to the short story, poetry, play, or graphic novel; genres refer to the sub-categories of the writing forms, such as realist, high fantasy, urban fantasy, sci-fi, horror, mystery, romance Published Works (Optional) Photocopies of published works Publications in school magazines or newsletters are acceptable A reference list of all published works stating: The name/ title of publication Date in which the works were published Format for reference list: Typed, 1.5 spaced, using 12 pt- Arial font Combine all works into 1 document file File Name: Full Name_LA_DSA_Published Works (e.g. Deborah Yeo_LA_DSA_Published Works) Document Format:.pdf,.doc,.docx Maximum File Size: 2 MB 2 of 5

3 Relevant Credentials (Optional) Most recent top 5 Achievements / Awards related to Literary Arts, from the last 3 years. 4 Phase 2: Audition for Shortlisted Applicants What You Will Experience during the Talent Academy Writing Tasks Demonstrate writing abilities by completing a variety of ad-lib writing tasks both individually and in a small group. Be open to giving and receiving feedback about your work from your fellow applicants Tip: Before attending the audition, have sufficient practice with thinking fast and writing fast but legibly. Sufficient knowledge and passion for different writing forms will be an advantage. Interview You will undergo a panel interview to ascertain your passion for writing and to articulate your creative ideas. You will be asked questions about your knowledge of writing and be given an opportunity to share your experiences and interests. 4 of 5
