1 what is important for the application portfolio? architecture begins where engineering ends Walter Gropius, 1 st Director of the Bauhaus You have already gained substantial academic experience in your previous studies which should be demonstrated in your portfolio. We want to see your most significant projects and pieces of work, and how you processed and developed your outcomes. The way is as important as the final outcome. 2 what is important for a successful portfolio? Show your passion, show your personality! Show variety, show your skills and interests! A successful portfolio is like an intriguing narrative. At this stage you will be familiar with many aspects of professional and academic studies. However, to support you on the journey to become a master, show us your scope and potential, whether it is more research or design related. Your portfolio will be carefully assessed, and being accepted will give you confidence on this ongoing journey.

3 what should I include in my portfolio? best works range of projects and skills At this stage we don t exactly prescribe what you should include as you may have already produced a portfolio. But take critical view of your work and ask yourself whether it really shows your very best and whether it tells the right story. The portfolio should demonstrate a range of well developed skills. This can be through more research or design related projects. We are looking for: Creative and imaginative elements Classical skills: such as sketching, drawing and model making IT based skills

4 what should I include in my portfolio? personal statement Provide some insight as to why you want to study for a Masters Degree in Newcastle and what you expect from these studies. Also tell us about your experiences, your passion and what matters to you. Your statement can be rather compact: around three to four hundred words. Be coherent, concise and honest, and yes, the statement is important! It can make a difference to your portfolio. You may also illustrate your statement with selected supportive images.

5 Portfolio Guidance International Year One in Architecture what format and how many pages? Ideally, you should submit your portfolio electronically together with your application as one pdf file with maximum of 10MB. A3 landscape is a good format. Your portfolio should consist of at least 12 sheets and should have a title and contents sheet. Your portfolio should be graphically well-arranged and selfexplanatory. All included work should have annotations and short explanations.

6 can I get support to improve my portfolio? what is mandatory for my application? Yes! We will provide you with constructive feedback and guidance in case your initial application portfolio needs improvement. Project work from your previous studies. Pieces of work outside your studies. Your personal statement. Evidence of a range of well developed core skills in design, project development, presentation and basic research.
