4-H Scrapbooking Purdue Extension Franklin County Introduction Save This Book: You will need to save this book, use it for each year of the project. Record Sheet: Complete the record sheet on page 7, have your leader sign it and turn it in at the time of project entry at the fair. Personal Items: You need to remember that your pages will be viewed by many different people. You may not want to include personal/private items. Label: Each scrapbook must have a label with the 4-H member s name, club and grade on it. This label must also list the page numbers of the 10 pages to be judged. County Fair Exhibit: Exhibits will be divided into 3 divisions based on your grade in school as of January 1. Beginner Grades 3-5 Intermediate Grades 6-8 Advanced Grades 9-12 State Fair Exhibit: One entry will be selected and entered as a craft entry to the Indiana State Fair. Table of Contents Exhibit Requirements 2 Plan of Action Basic Supplies Layout Tips Journaling & Labeling Memorabilia Tips Photography Tips Score Sheet Judging Criteria Purpose of Scrapbooking The purpose of scrapbooking is to preserve. It is to help you remember a moment in your life in a special way. You will probably not be able to scrapbook every picture or every event in your life but it is a great way to remember those very special times, people or places. Record Sheet 7 Resources 8 Scrapbook Pages You will need to select ten pages of your scrapbook to be judged at the fair. List the page numbers you would like to have judged on your label. The page numbers do not need to be written on the actual album as page 1 and so forth. If pages to be judged are not listed, pages 1-10 will be judged. 1st Page Definition of a page: It is sometimes difficult to understand what a page is in scrapbooking. Is it a single section or it is 2 put together into a layout? For the purposes of this project, a page is a single layout usually contained in one sleeve. 2nd page Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service
Exhibit Requirements by Division Beginner (grades 3-5) 1. Exhibit ten pages in a scrapbook no smaller than 5 x 7 and no larger than 8 ½ x Journaling Requirements: Label photos and memorabilia with names, dates, places, etc. Intermediate (grades 6-8) 1. Exhibit ten pages in an 8 x 10 or larger scrapbook. 2. Journaling Requirements: Label photos and memorabilia with names, dates, places, etc. and capturing memories with captions or words recording the happenings of the photos or memorabilia. Advanced (grades 912) 1. Exhibit ten pages in an 8 x 10 or larger scrapbook. 2. Journaling Requirements: Label photos and memorabilia with names, dates, places, etc. and capturing memories with captions or words recording the happenings of the photos or memorabilia or storytelling - writing thoughts and feelings and telling a complete story or memory on each page. Not every photo has a complete story, so choose those deserving of storytelling when thinking of page designs. It is ok to put several photos on a page and just use one of them to tell a story, and label or caption the others on the page. Clover Tip Intermediate and Advanced: 12 x 12 is the most common size and is easier to work with and find materials for, however many acid-free and lignin free paper can be more easily found in 8½ x 11 size. Basic Requirements for All Divisions 1. Scrapbook must have been completed during the current club year, since the last fair. 2. Scrapbook albums must have a front and back cover with pages firmly attached between the covers. 3. Scrapbook albums must have 10 pages completed for judging. Only completed pages with photos, memorabilia, documentation, decoration, etc. will be eligible for judging. Incomplete or unfinished pages will not be eligible for judging, or count toward the 10 page total. 4. Each 4-Her must provide a label with the 4-H members name, club and grade on it. This label must also list the page numbers of the 10 pages to be judged. The page numbers do not need to be written on the actual album as page 1 and so forth. If member does not indicate the pages to be judged, the judge will do pages One side of a page is considered one page, like in a book. 5. Photos and memorabilia must be included in each scrapbook, but not necessarily on each page, i.e. some pages may only contain photos, while others may contain only memorabilia. Members should include a variety in their list of pages to be judged. 6. Neatness counts, exhibit clean pages with clear writing. Handwriting is a part of your heritage and should be used often. 7. Using a variety of cropping techniques and page layouts will add interest and creativity to your album. Not everything has to be cropped or artsy, use a nice balance, keeping in mind that the main focus is preservation and not how many stickers or fancy papers you can use on a page. Let your pictures and memorabilia be the main focus. 8. Keep in mind the proper placement of photos, etc. in the album. You are telling a story, so use chronology (order of occurrence) or themes to organize the album. 9. Journaling is required on every page; without it you have pages of photographs and memorabilia, not a book of memories. Photos and memorabilia are more complete, more meaningful and more fun with detail, emotion and humor that only words can provide. Photo safe Pigma pens are fade-proof, waterproof and acid-free when used on acid-free paper. They cause no water damage to photos over time and will be legible for generations to come. Journaling must be handwritten by the 4-H exhibitor. 10. Photographs should be the focus of the album and eight of the ten pages should contain one or more photographs for all divisions. 11. Memorabilia adds meaning, texture and variety to the scrapbook and gets more fascinating with time. These are items that tell an important part of the story and add significantly to the interest of the page. Members may add memorabilia throughout the book and have two pages dedicated to it entirely. Page 2 4-H Scrapbooking
PLAN OF ACTION 1. Begin your album by selecting the photos you want to use (4 -H, Family, Sporting event, Birthday party, Vacations, etc.) 2. Plan the direction of the album. 3. Accumulate the memorabilia to be used in the album. 4. Plan journaling (labels, captions or storytelling) for the page. 5. Plan your layout of each page. Do not attach until you are pleased with your layout. 6. Complete the required number of pages. 7. Review the criteria to make sure you have met all the requirements for your 4-H project. 8. Complete the record sheet and get leader s signature. 9. Turn in album and record sheet for judging. 10. If available attend meetings or workshops. Clover Tip Photos and memorabilia should not touch. It might damage your photos! BASIC SCRAPBOOKING SUPPLIES Remember that quality albums use archival quality materials. Helpful places to buy scrapbooking materials include: Craft Stores, Discount Stores, Scrapbook Stores and On-line Companies. Some stores offer classes or workshops where you can use supplies and materials that they offer for free or a minimal fee. Have a plan of what you need before you go shopping. The minimum to start: Scrapbook Album Adhesive* Sharp Scissors** Journaling Pen - *black fine tip pen, acid free & archival safe Card stock and patterned paper (see Clover Tip). Make sure it is Photo Safe Paper Pictures Memorabilia Clover Tip It is important that all of your supplies be photo safe. *Adhesive Examples: tape runner, double stick tabs, photo tape or corners. Rubber Cement, school glue, and regular tape are NOT recommended. Look for terms such as Photo Safe, Archival Safe, Acid Free, and Lignin Free. **Scissor Examples: trimmer, decorative scissors, corner rounder, templates Purdue Extension Franklin County Page 3
Layout Tips Start with the memorabilia, photo or photos that you want to use. Think about what colors would work best. Use that as the focus to help you determine what paper to use. Experiment with how you would like to place the items. What type of journaling do you want to do? What and how much embellishments should you add? Try several different things before attaching everything permanently. Clover Tip Don t write directly on your photo or the background paper. Do your journaling on a separate piece of paper. If you make a mistake it will not ruin your entire layout. Journaling Tips Journaling should be a mix of your personal handwriting and other forms of print (computer generated, stickers, stamps, etc.). You may not like your handwriting but it is important that some is included. This is a part of your personal history and heritage. To help you get started in your journaling consider telling the who, what, where, why and when of each picture. Labeling Tips Be sure to include the names of the people in the photos. You may remember their names now, but 5, 10, 15 years from now you may not. If you have several pictures of the same people on a page, you do not need to label who they are in each picture. Also label your memorabilia. You may remember now what What do you want to remember about the event? Tell your feelings when the picture was taken. Use captions of what people were saying at the time. Perhaps use song lyrics to music that was playing at the time or popular when the picture was taken. that 4-H ribbon was for, but later you may not remember. Labeling can also be used as callouts. They are used to let us know what was going on in the picture. Callouts can be made on the computer or purchased as stickers. You can also draw your own! You can also include a famous quote or poem. Remember to cite (give credit to) the author. Other ideas to get you going: Once upon a time. Top 10 list Favorite holiday memories. Ask a family member what they remember about the picture. This type of callout is often used for what people are thinking. This type of callout is often used for what people are saying. Page 4 4-H Scrapbooking
Memorabilia Tips What is memorabilia? It is something that is important to you. It is something that you associate with an event (like a ticket stub) or a person (a lock of hair). It is a personal souvenir. It may include a 4-H fair ribbon, awards program or a playing card as a reminder of euchre games during fair week. What if it isn t acid safe or I don t know if it is? You can place the item in a separate sleeve or envelope that is archive safe. Archival spray can be used for newspaper articles or paper that you are unsure about. Use photo corners to help hold memorabilia in place. Clover Tip When using brads, buttons or thicker memorabilia, you need to consider how those larger or thicker items can affect other items (including photos) in your book. Photography Tips This is not a photography project. Your pictures may not be perfect. However, you should try to pick the best ones for your album since it is something that you will keep for a very long time and perhaps give to one of your children someday. You can also cut or crop your pictures to improve them. You may want to have your picture enlarged (made bigger) then cut out the part you want to use. You may want to mat or frame your photo. It is the same principle as framing a picture you would hang on the wall. By placing an additional layer of paper or card stock around your photo it will make it stand out and look more professional. Which stands out? Embellishment Tips What embellishments would work with the pictures? There are many to choose from: stickers, brads, cut-outs, rub-ons, stamps, ribbon to name just a few. Think about placement. For example, with most stickers, once you have them in place they will not move. Try trimming around your sticker before peeling off the paper and placing it where you think you might want it. You can also try placing a piece of wax paper over your layout and placing the sticker on it. You should be able to peel the sticker off of the wax paper and place it on your layout. 6 The Experiential Learning Model Experiential learning distinguishes 4-H youth-development education from many formal educational methods. Youth get the most out of each experience and activity by following the experiential model s five steps. 1. Youth learn by doing an activity. (Experience) 2. They share their experience and reactions. (Share) 3. They discuss or reflect on what they did. (Process) 4. Youth relate skills they practiced to everyday situations. (Generalize) 5. They apply their experience to other real-world situations. (Apply) SAMPLE Scrapbooking Scorecard Division: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced Name: Placing: Excellent Good Needs to Improve Scrapbook pages are attached between a front & back cover book, that is appropriate size for division. Label is completed with name, club, grade, pages to be judged. (If not the 1st 10 pages.) Completed 10 pages. (Pages should be labeled only if not the 1st 10 pages.) Scrapbook album contains both photos and memorabilia. Neatness Interest and variety in pages. Chronological or thematic order of pages is correct. Meets Journaling Requirements for division Sense of entire project: Did the 4 H member preserve pictures and memorabilia effectively. ADDITIONAL JUDGES COMMENTS: Page 6 4-H Scrapbooking
