4-H Scrapbooking Project Level A (Grades 3 & 4) Some manuals are used more than one year. An additional copy will cost $1.00. Purdue University is an equal access/equal opportunity institution. 0
Elkhart County 4-H Scrapbook Project Pilot Project Approved by 4-H Corporation October 2002 Revised December 2003 Thank you to Penny Anderson and Tammy Yoder for writing this manual. 1
Scrapbook Project Purpose: The Scrapbook project allows you to learn to safely preserve your memories in an organized and creative way. Memories may include: family, school, 4-H, etc. Levels: Level A Grades 3-4 Level B Grades 5-6 Level C Grades 7-9 Level D Grades Requirements: All participants must be enrolled in the Elkhart County 4-H Program. Carefully read this Project Manual. If you have taken the 4-H Scrapbook project in previous years, do not include any pages you have submitted for judging in the past. Only display this year s requirements. It is strongly recommended that you attend an introductory workshop. Workshops are available through scrapbooking retailers, but may have a fee included. Guidelines for All Scrapbooks: 1. Neatness is very important. Exhibit clean pages with clear handwriting. Your handwriting is part of your heritage. Please use it often! Computer created writing is allowed but will not improve your score. 2. Please spell words correctly and use a dictionary if necessary. 3. Keep in mind the proper placement of photos, etc. in your album. Your scrapbook is telling a story. Use chronology (putting things in order of occurrence) or seasonal activities to organize your scrapbook. 4. Journaling is to be used along with your photos and memorabilia. Without journaling, over time, your photos and memorabilia will become less meaningful to you and others. 5. Using a variety of cropping techniques and page layouts will add interest and creativity to your album. Not everything has to be cropped or artsy. Use a nice balance, keeping in mind that the main focus is preservation and not how many stickers or fancy papers you can use on a page! 6. The scrapbook album must demonstrate a good sense of the entire project and what it means to preserve our memories. 2
Scrapbook Project Requirements Level A Grades 3-4 Exhibit one *2-page spread that includes: A) Title with theme. B) *Cropped pictures - every picture does not have to be cropped. C) At least one enhancement. Enhancement includes: stickers, die cuts, decorative paper, and stamping. D) Journaling - who, what, when, and where. E) Pages may be 12 x 12 or 8 ½ x 11. F) All supplies should be *acid/lignin free. Pages should be *buffered as well. G) Pages should be displayed in a ½ inch or 1 inch thick three ring binder or in an album. H) All pages must have page protectors. I) All other basic requirements and exhibit rules should be met. Read through the entire manual. * Definition located on page entitled Scrapbooking Terms to Know 3
Scrapbooking Terms to Know Acid Free indicates that the chemistry is acid balanced so that pages or supplies will not cause damage to your photos. Ph 8.0 is recommended. Buffered means that the photos are protected against pollutants from the outside (the environment, acidic brochures, greeting cards, etc.) because the paper or pages have an alkaline reserve that neutralizes the acid from the memorabilia. Crop is to trim pictures in order to put the focus on the subject of the picture. This can be done in rectangular or irregular shapes such as stars, hearts, ovals, etc. This allows you to get more pictures on the page, cut out background clutter, etc. However, never crop Polaroid pictures or anything with historical value. Lignin Free means that the pages, papers, and supplies will not yellow. Page protectors should be polypropylene (photo safe plastic) to protect album pages and photographs from dust, spills, abrasions, finger prints, etc. Templates are a fast, fun, and easy way to trace or cut photos and photo mounting paper into decorative shapes or trace the shapes onto your pages. When tracing on a photo, make sure you use a photo safe pencil so it will not damage your photos and so that the lead can easily be wiped off the photo. 2-page spread is 2 opposing pages with the same theme. 4
Judge s Score Sheet and Comment Card Scrapbook Album Level A Grades 3-4 Points 1. Scrapbook pages are exhibited in the correct size binder. (5) 2. Project exhibited contains 2-page spread with a themed title. Pages are 12 x 12 or 8 ½ x 11. (15) 3. The pages are clean and neat. (15) 4. The pages show interest and variety. (10) 5. The pages contain an overall theme. (10) 6. Journaling is complete (labels of who, what, where & when). (25) 7. Materials used appear to be acid/lignin free. (5) 8. All pages have page protectors. (5) 9. The project preserves the 4-Her s memories effectively. (10) Total (100) Additional Judge s Comments: 5
