2 Thank you for your interest in the Shine a Light for Children Lantern Project! We invite you to join us in making special paper lanterns in honour of Queensland Child Protec;on Week. Wherever you live in Queensland you can join in the fun! With our easy to follow DIY lantern making templates you can create your own beau;ful lanterns with your students, family or community group members. We have provided 3 different types of lanterns to support a variety of ages, abili;es, and budgets. We would love to see your lanterns! 3 1. Decoupage Bottle Lantern - Super Easy! What you will need: A used and clean plas;c bosle any size A crau knife / scissors Piece of baking paper enough to cover bosle Coloured ;ssue shapes to decoupage Watered down PVA glue (50/50 mix) String or garden wire for handle Hole punch to make holes To make your lantern: 1. Carefully cut the top off the bosle using the crau knife or scissors. 2. Using the hole-punch make 2 holes in the top this will be used for your handle. 3. Measure and cut a piece of baking paper to fit around your lantern. 4. Decoupage and collage your ;ssue onto the baking paper using the glue mixture. This could be a random pasern or a bespoke design. 5. Once the design is completed cover your plas;c bosle lantern with glue 6. Then carefully wrap your design around the outside and s;ck. 7. Get a piece of string or garden wire and thread through the punched holes and ;e/ secure each side to make a handle. 8. Use a piece of blue tack to secure a basery operated tea light or LED light

4 2. Asian Inspired Bottle Lantern - Easy! What you will need: A used and clean plas;c bosle any size A crau knife / scissors Piece of coloured cellophane paper Piece of paper big enough to wrap around the bosle PVA glue String or garden wire for handle Hole punch to make holes BaSery tea light or LED light A piece of Blue Tac To make your lantern: 1. Carefully cut the top off the bosle using the crau knife or scissors. 2. Using the hole-punch make 2 holes in the top this will be used for your handle. 3. Measure and cut a piece of paper to fit around your lantern. 4. Measure and cut a piece of coloured cellophane to wrap around your bosle lantern. 5. Cover your plas;c bosle lantern with glue. 6. S;ck and warp the coloured cellophane around the bosle. 7. While the cellophane is drying, draw, paint, and colour your design 8. Fold the paper sleeve in half, lengthways 9. Cut from the centre fold towards the outer edge at 1cm spaces making sure you do not cut right across the width.

3. Pyramid Paper Lantern - Bit harder! What you will need: S;cks - Any strong, straight material: willow, thin bamboo, garden cane, etc. about the width of your lisle finger.

Wire (1.25mm thick) Paper - greaseproof paper from the supermarket works a treat. You can also use ;ssue paper (two layers for ;ssue paper) or rice paper.

What you will need: S;cks - Any strong, straight material: willow, thin bamboo, garden cane, etc. about the width of your lisle finger. o 4 x 40cm for the base o 4 x 55cm for the upright sec;ons o 2 x 45cm s;cks for base diagonal A ball of Jute twine or string cut into 50cm strips Gaffa or strong tape 1 x tea light candle Wire (1.25mm thick) Paper - greaseproof paper from the supermarket works a treat. You can also use ;ssue paper (two layers for ;ssue paper) or rice paper. The cheapest greaseproof paper from the supermarket ;ghtens when dry and looks like rice paper. Coloured ;ssue to decoupage and decorate White PVA glue, watered down to the consistence of cream (70/30 mix) A sponge Hot glue gun and glue s;cks

Make sure you leave a small angle (about 2.5 cm) on each corner When you wrap the s;cks together with the gaffer tape / String dipped in PVA pull ;ght and press it down as you go. The ;ghter the wrap and the harder you press, the beser the s;cking power. Take the four uprights (55cm s;cks) and hold them in a bunch in one hand, wrap tape/string dipped in PVA around the top of the bunch, about 2.5cm down from the top. Slowly and gently pull the end of the s;cks outwards to create an even pyramid shape. Join the legs of the uprights to the base square, on the outside of the angles, leaving about 2.5 cm for the feet (so the base of the lantern is off the ground) ASach the 2 x diagonal pieces across the bosom square (like an x shape) asach to the upper part of the base s;cks - this process will make lantern more sturdy also straighten out any warping or wobbly bits. Hot Glue a tea light on a strip of card the width of your base square. Then hot glue gun the card with tea light to the base square CuTng the paper panels Cut the shapes of the triangle sides from the greaseproof paper, leaving at least a 2cm-seam allowance Cut the tops off the triangles (about 2cms) to create the air flow required when the candle is lit. Mix the glue and water (about 2/3 glue), to a consistency of pouring cream. (Too thin and the glue won t s;ck, too thick and it won t smooth over the surfaces). Sponge the greaseproof paper with the diluted glue over an area big enough to cover the paper triangles. (If you are using ;ssue paper, repeat with another layer of paper). Place the first triangle piece on a side of the frame, dab the edges down with the sponge so that they fold over the s;cks.

Decora1ng the Lantern AUer the lantern has dried, decorate it with images keeping in mind that the lanterns when lit at night have a sou glow and so look best with bold colours on the paper. The colours that seemed to work best for us were blacks, deep reds, purples and blues. You may want to experiment beforehand to see what looks best for you Why not have a go at doing the Queensland Child protec;on week logo on one side! See asached template! 9 Have a go at creating the Qld Child Protection Week Logo on your lantern! Enlarge it on a photocopier to make it bigger if you like! Then cut it out to create a stencil for cunng out coloured ;ssue paper!
