Elephant s Tea Party 5 today! 5 th Anniversary Supplement A special supplement to Child Bereavement UK's activity workbook for pupils aged 5 to 11 Helping pupils to develop coping skills for loss and bereavement. To order an activity workbook, visit:
To celebrate the 5 th anniversary of our Elephant's Tea Party initiative, we have devised a range of new extension activities designed to accompany our activity workbook for pupils aged 5 to 11. Before undertaking these activities, please read our Guidance for teachers on pages 2 to 3 of the activity workbook. Supplementary extension activity 1 - Word Search of Euphemisms (KS2) Some people can find talking about death difficult and there are many phrases and expressions in the English language that are used to mean death. Pupils in this activity are given the origin of some of these euphemisms and then asked to find them in a word search. This activity can be used to promote conversations around why it can be difficult to talk about death. Supplementary extension activity 2 - Memory Friendship Bracelets (KS1-2) Memories are important when someone special to us dies. One way to remember that person is to make a memory band/bracelet using the colours that remind you of them. You can then use the band as a wrist bracelet, a phone tag or a zip tie. Supplementary extension activity 3 - Acrostic Poem (KS1-2) An acrostic poem is a type of poem where the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a word or phrase. The most common form is where the first letters of each line spell out a phrase. Ask pupils to write a poem using the phrase The Elephant s Tea Party. The poems could be used as part of a display. Supplementary extension activity 4 - Origami Elephant Herds (KS1-2) Elephants live in herds. Make a herd of elephants for your classroom. These can be grouped together in a display. Remember to add some vegetation to the display so that they have something to eat! Supplementary extension activity 5 - Wellbeing Drawing (KS1-2) Some pupils will find colouring a good way to gather their thoughts. It may be useful as an activity where a Teaching Assistant is working with a single child or small group. This activity can be useful to open discussions.
Activity 1 worksheet a: Word Search of Euphemisms (KS2) Euphemisms - What other words do we use for 'death'? Some people can find talking about death difficult and there are many phrases and expressions in the English language that are used to mean death, such as 'gone to sleep'. See if you can find the words and phrases listed below in the word search. Curtains Six feet under Snuff it Put down Push up the daisies The Grim Reaper Means to die. Taken from the final curtain at the end of a play. Six feet is the traditional depth of a grave. A slang phrase meaning to die. A phrase, along with 'put to sleep', that is often used when an animal is euthanised. Dates back from the early 20th century, a phrase meaning that someone has died and has been buried. The personification of death depicted as a skeleton with a scythe. Pop one s clogs Bite the dust Brown bread A humorous English slang phrase from the 19th century, based on the fact that at the end of a person s life they may have told their family to sell their old clothes to pay for the funeral. An informal phrase meaning to die. Cockney rhyming slang for dead. Hop the twig Kick the bucket Pass away Die with one s boots on Croak Dead as a doornail Fall off one s perch Dead as a dodo A British phrase meaning to depart suddenly'. A twig is placed on the ground. Pagan beliefs say that to 'hop the twig', i.e. you stand on one side of the twig and jump to the other side, places you in the after world. An informal phrase going back to the Middle Ages. When someone was hung they stood on a bucket, which was kicked away from them, so they died. A common way of saying someone has died. To die while able, or during activity, as opposed to in infirmity or while asleep. A slang word for to die. Used by writers like Charles Dickens to describe someone who has died. An informal phrase for to die. An informal phrase linked with the extinction of the dodo bird.
Activity 1 worksheet b: Word Search of Euphemisms (KS2) Euphemisms - What other words do we use for 'death'?.
Activity 2 worksheet: Memory Friendship Bracelets (KS1-2) Memories are important when someone special to us dies or we lose something that we treasured e.g. favourite toy. One way to remember them is to make a memory band using the colours that remind you of them. The bands can be used as a friendship bracelet, a phone tag, or can be attached to your school bag as a way to remember your special person. You may want to make another one for someone else so that you can share the memories. Instructions 1 Choose 6 colours from the selection of embroidery thread available, to represent someone or something that you wish to remember. You could choose their favourite colour, the colour of their car or a colour associated with a hobby, like green for golf, if that was their hobby. Perhaps choose a colour that is linked to a happy memory, such as the colour of their favourite jumper. 2 Before you begin making your bracelet, fill out the Activity 2b worksheet to record your colour choices. Example below. Colour Pale blue Reason for your choice It was the colour of their favourite jumper
Activity 2 worksheet: Memory Friendship Bracelets (KS1-2) Instructions continued... 3 Take your 6 threads in your chosen colours and cut to 120 cm lengths. 4 Lay the lengths together and find the half-way point. 5 At the half-way point, make a loop and tie with a knot. Secure the loop to a flat, solid surface with some strong tape. Tape your loop to a solid surface 6 Next, select two threads of the same colour and bring them over to the left of all the remaining strands and form an L shape. Place threads in an L shape 7 Take the ends of your two separate strands and feed them under the remaining threads and then up through your L shape to form a knot. Draw the knot up towards the loop and tighten. 8 Repeat stages 6 and 7 a further five times to form a total of six knots in that one colour. 9 Do the same with the next colour and all the colours in order to make 6 knots in each colour and repeat until you have enough length to fit around your wrist. It should start to look like this 10 Carefully tie all the threads together at the end with a large knot which can be pushed through the hoop at the other end, acting as a fastener. Your bracelet is now ready to wear! Ready to wear!
Activity 2 worksheet b: Colour recording sheet Your name: Class: Colour Example: pale blue Reason for your choice Example: It was the colour of their favourite jumper
Activity 3 worksheet: Acrostic Poem (KS1-2). An acrostic poem is a type of poetry where the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a particular word or phrase. The most common form is where the first letters of each line spell out a phrase. What can you make out of the following? 1) The Elephant's Tea Party 2) My favourite memory 3) Remembering Here's an example using the word Tusks The party is starting Usual food and drink S ome friends have arrived already Keep dancing in the moonlight Someone is in for a surprise
Activity 4 worksheet: Origami Elephant Herds (KS1-2) Make some origami elephants that can be displayed as a herd on the wall. Don't forget to add some vegetation to make sure the elephants have something to eat! A square piece of paper is needed, preferably coloured on one side. 15 cm by 15 cm is a good size. Instructions 1 Rotate the paper so that it looks like a diamond. Fold in half horizontally and unfold. Then fold in half vertically and unfold. 2 Fold the top point to the middle point of the diamond and fold. 3 Draw a line from the bottom centre point to the edges of the top fold. Next, fold in each side from the bottom centre point to the edge of the folded top paper
Activity 4 worksheet: Origami Elephant Herds (KS1-2) Instructions continued... 4 Draw two dotted lines from the corner at the base of the triangle to form a smaller triangle each side should be the same size. 5 Fold the triangles back. 6 Fold the point of the large triangle to the base of the triangle. 7 Make a small pleat in the triangle and bend the top corners of the rectangle back. 8 Turn over your folded paper and you have the head of an elephant! Draw on eyes and a mouth. If you wanted to, you could make some faces that express how a bereaved person may feel e.g. sad, angry or worried. Fold a few more pleats to create creases in the elephant's trunk. 9 To form the body, take a second sheet of coloured paper and fold in half lengthways. Then, fold up a 5 cm flap at the bottom to form the feet. 10 Finally, turn the paper over and fold both halves in towards the centre fold to form legs. Attach to the back of the elephant's head with some tape.
Activity 5 worksheet: Wellbeing colouring (KS1-2). In some countries, people decorate elephants at special events. Elephant Festival is celebrated in Jaipur city in Rajasthan state in India. It is held on the day of Holi festival, usually in the month of March. The festival features Elephant Polo and an Elephant Dance. The Elephant Festival begins with a beautiful procession of bedecked elephants, and folk dancers. The owners proudly embellish their elephants with vibrant colours, jhools (saddle cloths) and heavy jewellery. Colour in our elephant ready for a festival.
