2 State Fair of West Virginia Scholarship Donors Scholarships are available for youth who have par cipated in the State Fair of West Virginia, excelled scholas cally, and who have a proven nancial need. Applicants must have shown in the Junior Livestock Show, an equine event, or have exhibited in the Cecil Underwood Youth Building within the previous ve (5) years to be eligible. 3 PREMIUMS 1. Premiums will not be awarded simply because the animal or ar cle is the best of its kind exhibited. The judge must consider it worthy of a premium upon its intrinsic merit or may refuse to award a premium of any kind. 2. In any class where there is no compe on, the judge must sign a statement that the animal or ar cle is worthy of rst place money; otherwise, a blue ribbon will be awarded but only second money will be paid. 3. PREMIUMS WILL BE PAID ACCORDING TO THE RECORDS TURNED IN TO THE FAIR MANAGER S OFFICE BY THE SUPERINTENDENTS AND NOT BY RIBBONS PRESENTED. General Rules and Regula ons 1. Each exhibitor will be charged a $3.00 processing fee. Please make checks payable to State Fair of West Virginia. 2. Please note changes to check in/check out and judging mes for 2018!!! 3. No exhibits will be accepted outside of normal check in mes. 4. Please note, due to the State Fair extending to a 10 day fair, pick up mes for exhibits have changed! Please pay a en on to respec ve calendars. 5. Exhibits cannot be picked up before normal check out mes. Check out will be Sunday, August 19 from 1 p.m. 4 p.m. 6. All limited classes MUST BE ENTERED BY PAPER. 7. When there is no compe on, a ribbon may be given (if worthy) with corresponding money paid. If in a class no exhibits are worthy, neither ribbons nor prize money will be awarded. The decision of the judges is nal. 8. Fair officials will take every precau on for the safekeeping of exhibits a er their nal arrival and arrangement in the building, but will not be responsible for any damage or loss that may occur. 9. Entry tags must be a ached to exhibit prior to arriving on ground for delivery, when applicable. Tags will be mailed a er the entry deadline. SPECIAL NOTICE TO EXHIBITORS Exhibitors need to note the following deadlines: 12 Noon, Friday, July 6 for paper entries and 12 Midnight Friday, July 6 for online entries Entry forms will be accepted beginning May 21 through 12 Noon, July 6. Any entry forms received before May 21 or a er 12 Noon, July 6 will not be processed. ALL ENTRY FORMS MUST ARRIVE IN THE STATE FAIR OFFICE BY 12 NOON ON JULY 6. Hand delivered entry forms will be accepted at the Administra on Building on the Fairgrounds from 8:00 a.m. un l 4:00 p.m., weekdays and from 8:00 a.m. un l 12 Noon on July 6. Online entries will be accepted at un l 12 Midnight on July 6. LIMITED CLASSES MUST BE ENTERED BY PAPER FORMS. 3

Consignment forms can be found at the show desk during the Junior Livestock Shows. For more information, contact, SFWV Entry Department or Visit Farming Heritage Award The West Virginia Heritage Award honors families who have strived to maintain its rural lifestyle by contributing to the community, acting as role models, dedicating time to efficient agricultural production and maintaining the upkeep of their farm through generations. Applications are being accepted for entries in the 2018 Farming Heritage Award Contest. Families may enter or be nominated for the award. For complete entry information and prizes or to print an entry form visit, Entries are due to the State Fair Office By 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25. 9 Division 6 Con nued 85. FARMER S MARKET DISPLAY OF FRESH VEGETABLES This display must consist of no less than 10 an no more than 20 different kinds of vegetables grown by the exhibitor. No more than four (4) cul vars of any one kind of vegetable may be shown (example: red & yellow tomatoes are considered two cul vars). U.S. grading standards will be observed. The display will be judged for quality, quan ty, and variety; general appearance of the exhibit will be considered. The maximum width of the display must not exceed 36. Each display has ve (5), 6 shelves which run top to bo om in a waterfall effect (the top shelf may be used). The oor space below the bo om shelf may not be used. Vegetables must be in container (s). Judging will be based on the BJCP Beer Scoresheet that can be found at h p:// Five categories will be used aroma, appearance, avor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. The score sheet will be returned to the exhibitor s a er the fair, upon exhibitor s request. 6. A class should contain at least three (3) entries. Those that do not, may be combined. 7. 13 Division 15 Amateur Winemaking 1. Exhibits must be produced by exhibitor. Exhibitor must be 21 years of age or older. 2. Exhibitors must not be involved in any way with commercial winemaking or use the facili es of commercial wineries. 3. Wine shall be exhibited in unlabeled, standard 375 ml. wine bo les. 4. No ar cial coloring or avoring allowed in exhibits (only natural ingredients). 5. An exhibitor may enter more than one (1) wine in a class, but the wines must be from different fruits or vintage years. 6. A class should contain at least three (3) entries. Those that do not may be combined. 7. The judges may move any incorrectly classed wine into their proper class. 8. No names or labels are permi ed on the bo les. State Fair entry tags should be a ached and will serve as iden ca on. 9. If corks are used that have the name of any winery printed on them or an prin ng is evident that could suggest that the wine may be store bought, it is in the best interest of the contestant to show evidence of inser ng the cork by striking through the prin ng with a pen. 10. Scoring will be done according to the American Wine Society wine evalua on chart on a scale of 20 points consis ng of the following: Appearance 3 Aroma/Texture 6 Taste/Texture 6 A ertaste 3 Overall Impression No awards will be given to any wine scoring fewer than 10 points. If, in the judges opinion, a wine is not worthy of men on, no points will be awarded. Fewer than three (3) awards may be made by in each category. 14 Division 16 Special Contests Adults Remembering When Garden and Farm Implement Arrangement Show off the invaluable tools your parents and grandparents passed on to you in the Garden and Farm Implement Arrangement Contest! Rules: 1. Implements include anything you use in the garden including hoes, rakes, spades, etc. 2. Arrangement must hang and be xed with a hanger able to support its weight. 3. Implement arrangement must not exceed 6 tall. 4. Arrangement may be decorated with dried or fresh material. 5. Arrangement will be judged for aesthe c appeal and crea vity. Try your talents in the State Fair of West Virginia s Edible Window Box Class! Rules: 1. Exhibit may contain herbs, vegetables, fruit, or any other edible items planted in a liner to t the window box provided (length 32, height 6 1/2, width 6 1/2 ) 2. Plants must be grown by the exhibitor in the container. 3. The display will be judged for quality, variety, and general appearance of the exhibit. The judges will be looking for full, healthy plants. 4. The liner may be embellished with name tags, decora ons, etc., according to the exhibitor s crea ve ability and in the celebra on of the 2018 theme, Unforge able Fun 5. 15 Vegetables in a Wheelbarrow Show off your ability to grow a portable garden. Rules: 1. Display your choice of no more than twelve (12) and no fewer than seven (7) of your favorite vegetables (including tomatoes). 2. Wheelbarrow must be no larger than 4 cu. feet or 2 width x 2 length x 1 depth. Wheelbarrow may be any type that meets size requirements. 3. Accessories are permi ed but may not be taller than 14 and must match current Fair theme, Unforge able Fun 4. Vegetables must be rooted and growing in wheelbarrow, not buried containers or recently transplanted. 5. The display will be judged for quality, quan ty, variety, and general appearance of exhibit. 6. All entrants in this contest must pre register using a State Fair paper entry form. 7. When: Thursday, August 16, 2018 Contest begins at 1 p.m. Where: West Virginia Building NO PRE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Rules: 1. All hats must be decorated with ornamental vegetables, either ar cial or dried. 2. All materials for decora ng will be provided by the State Fair of West Virginia. No outside or pre decorated hats accepted. 3. All hats must be assembled within a 10 minute limit. 4. Contestants must wear hats during judging and will be allowed to keep hats when judging is complete. 5. Exhibitors must be 10 years of age and up. 6. 16 Traditional Vegetables in Unique Containers Join the party and bring your best vegetable in the most unique container in our Unique Container Contest Example of containers: old boot, watering can, old whiskey barrel, pitcher, etc. NO PLASTIC BUCKETS ALLOWED Rules: 1. Vegetable must be in bloom or ac vely producing. 2. Container may be no larger than 30 tall. 3. Exhibit will be judged for crea vity of container, aesthe c appeal and health and vigor of vegetable plant. 4. Vegetable must be ac vely growing in container and not recently transplanted for show. 5. 96 Division 2 4 H Enrichment Programs 1. Educa onal Programs Entries are at the discre on of the county Extension professional responsible for 4 H youth development programs with consulta on with the 4 H curriculum specialist. These entries should showcase 4 H educa onal programs that do not t into a tradi onal 4 H project experience. Youth should be engaged for an extended period of me and/or ac vi es to gain knowledge or skills on a topic. En tries should demonstrate the same level of quality and content as a tradi onal 4 H project book. Examples include: a. School enrichment programs using curricula like Know Your State; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; and CS First b. Special Interest programs such as Robo cs and Shoo ng Sports 2. State 4 H Contests and Exhibi ons Entries must be submi ed through county Extension offices using the county speci c criteria for the state level entries. County offices will determine which entries are submi ed to the State Fair. Entries must meet the minimum standards as described by the state guidelines for the specific contest.
