This challenge is based on the world-famous series of books by J. K. Rowling, and was created as part of my fundraising efforts for my trip to the WSJ in Japan next summer. Thank you very much for your support! Rainbows and Beavers should attempt at least four challenges, each from a different section, as well as the compulsory challenge. Brownies and Cubs should attempt at least five challenges, each from a different section, as well as the compulsory challenge. Guides and Scouts should attempt at least six challenges, each from a different section, as well as the compulsory challenge. Senior Section members and Explorers should attempt at least seven challenges, each from a different section, as well as the compulsory challenge. However, this challenge is for fun, so feel free to adapt and change the challenges to suit you or your unit, or create your own challenges to fit into a section. Some of the challenges are less suitable for every agegroup, so please pick challenges which are appropriate, challenging and fun for you or your section. This Challenge is LONE FRIENDLY

Receiving your Hogwarts letter Your Hogwarts letter arrives sometime after your eleventh birthday. The envelope is made of a yellowing parchment, and the address is written in green ink. The letter is, of course, delivered by owl. Craft your own quill and try writing with it. Is it harder than using a normal pen or pencil? You could research and try calligraphy. Create owl art using materials at hand, for example using handprint painting or collage. You could use recycled materials, using bottle tops for eyes, straws for claws and shredded paper for feathers. Research and discuss other ways of communication. Wizards use owls to send messages, but Muggles send s, texts, and letters by post, and use telephones to call each other. Try a new way of communicating semaphore, Morse code, British Sign Language (BSL), etc. Try making parchment style paper. Tinting the paper with strong cold tea works well. Making a Quill - 1. Select a feather, and use a pair of scissors to cut the end at a sharp angle. 2. Use a toothpick to remove the debris from the inside of the quill tip. 3. Use a sharp knife or similar to make a tiny slit in the middle of quill tip. 4. Try writing with your quill! Choosing Ink - Washable ink is recommended, and is available in craft shops and stationers Alternatively, try making your own ink from food colouring and water or watered down paint.

Your journey to Diagon Alley Inside your letter, there is a list of the equipment you will need at Hogwarts. The list includes items like cauldrons, pointed hats and wands, all of which can be bought in Diagon Alley, the street of Wizarding shops in London. Dress up like a witch or wizard. Try creating your witch or wizard outfit out of recycled materials and have a fashion show. Make your own witch or wizard hat. Make your own wand a wizard or witch s most important piece of equipment. Write your own kit list for an event or activity. Have a treasure hunt to find Galleons (chocolate coins). Recycled Wizarding outfits - A cloak made from black bin bags. Robes made of newspapers. Magic charms made from bottle tops. Making your own wand - 1. Stick a strip of double sided spellotape diagonally across a sheet of A4 paper. 2. Then choose your wand core. Dragon heartstring (red embroidery thread), phoenix tail-feathers (red and yellow craft feathers) and unicorn tail hairs (silver pipecleaners or silver embroidery thread) are a few to try. 3. Place your chosen wand core at the corner of the paper, parallel to the spellotape. 4. Roll the paper diagonally, starting in that corner. You should roll one end slightly less than the other so that the thin paper roll is tapered. 5. Roll the paper until you get to the double sided spellotape, and roll over this so that the tapered roll sticks to it. 6. Spread the remaining corner of the paper with a little glue (PVA works well). 7. Then continue to roll the wand tightly and hold until it dries. 8. Using glitter glue (or equivalent) make spirals or patterns on your wand from the tip to the base. 9. You could then paint your wand in a colour of your choice and decorate it with symbols or letters in metallic pens.

Your journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters To get to Hogwarts, you need to catch the train from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters on King s Cross station at 11 o clock on 1 st September. After you have found your way onto the magical platform, a scarlet steam engine will take you to Hogsmede station. Go on a train journey. Trains are a fantastic way to travel, so if you have a train station nearby, why not go on a train journey to somewhere new? Try making some chocolate truffles, peppermint creams or other simple sweets, like the sweets you can buy from the trolley on the Hogwarts Express. Make new friends. Attend an event where there are people new to you, or in your unit, try several ice breakers to see if you can learn something new about everyone. Design your own chocolate frog cards for characters from the Harry Potter books, or from another series of books. Suggested chocolate truffles recipe - 1. Put the digestive biscuits (around twenty) in a plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin until you have crumbs. 2. Put the butter (125g) and condensed milk (200g) in a pan over a low heat, until the butter melts. 3. Allow to cool slightly, then add the crushed biscuits, cocoa powder (2 tbsp.) and desiccated coconut (125g) to the melted butter mixture and stir to combine. 4. Mould the mixture into truffles about the size of large marbles. 5. Fill a saucer with chocolate sprinkles and gently roll each truffle in them until they are fully covered. 6. Chill the truffles until ready to serve. Icebreaker ideas - Tall Stories The leader starts a story with a sentence which ends in SUDDENLY. The next person then has to add to the story with their own sentence which ends in SUDDENLY. Continue the story until everyone has contributed. The story should become crazier as everyone adds their sentence. You could tape the story and play it back. Line Up Split the unit into groups of eight to ten people. Ask them to form a line in order of height (smallest to tallest), birthdays (January through to December), shoe size (from smallest to largest), alphabetical first names, etc.

Sorting Ceremony At the start of term feast, the Sorting Ceremony takes place, and all the new students are sorted into the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. They are sorted into their houses by the Sorting Hat, which makes up a new song every year to tell them about the four houses. Write a song or a poem. If you are struggling for ideas, consider rewriting a classic fairy-tale with a modern twist or as a poem, or try writing an acrostic poem using the name of a place you ve visited or someone you admire. Discuss the qualities of the different houses in the Harry Potter books. Which ones are good qualities, and which ones do you think you have? Each house has an animal associated with it. Research the animals qualities and think about what this says about each house. Research your name and/or family history. Each house has to work together as a team. Play some team games with your unit. Have a House Championship. Which patrol/six/group can be most helpful over an event or evening? Award points for tidying up, being helpful etc. Play corners. You could use the four houses, or mythical creatures, for example hippogriff, dragon, phoenix and centaur. Playing corners - 1. Assign names to the four corners of a room. 2. One of the leaders leaves the room or stands so they cannot see what is happening. The leader counts to ten or music is played (Hedwig s tune would be a good choice) while everyone chooses a corner. 3. When the music is switched off, the leader calls out the name of a corner. Everyone in that corner must sit down. 4. This is repeated. When there are only four people left, they must all choose a different corner. 5. The last person still standing is the winner.

Quidditch Quidditch is the favourite sport of the Wizarding world. It is played on broomsticks, and there are seven players on each team. There are four balls, and three golden hoops at each end of the oval pitch. Make a broomstick. Try out a sport that is new to you. Have a games championship. Make your own Snitch. Try playing a game of Quidditch at your meeting. People could hold hula hoops at each end of the hall as goals, and use a basketball or a balloon as a Quaffle. Ideas for making a broomstick - Use 120cm long segments of foam pipe insulation for the broom handle, and shredded coloured plastic bags for the tail. When thrown, this flies quite well. Make a more authentic looking broomstick, using a wooden pole or strong stick for the handle, and lashing twigs or smaller sticks onto the end for the tail. Ideas for games championships - Shoe Relay Everyone takes off their shoes and jumbles them up in a pile at one end of the hall. They are then spilt into patrols/sixes/groups and line up at the end of the hall. Each patrol/six/group can then send one person at a time to retrieve one shoe. The first group to all be wearing their own shoes is the winner. Feeding Time at the Zoo Everyone finds a partner, and each pair sit down facing each other with their feet touching, so there is a line of pairs down the length of the hall, forming a ladder with their feet as rungs. A chair is placed about a meter away from each end of the ladder. Each pair is given a name of an animal or magical creature. When their name is called, the pair must stand up, and run round the whole of the ladder, back to their space. The first one to get back gains a point for their side. Ideas for making a Snitch - Spray paint a golf ball gold, and attach cardboard wings. Spray a bouncy ball gold, and attach large feathers. Use pins to attach gold sequins to a polystyrene ball. Glue pins onto feathers and pin them on to the ball.

Charms Charms is one of the subjects that is studied at Hogwarts, where witches and wizards learn to cast spells to give objects new properties, such as enchanting keys to fly or changing the colour of a cushion. Charms are spells which give objects unusual properties, such as being able to fly. Try balloon racing, and see who can make the fastest balloon. Try tie-dying t-shirts or other items. Discuss which super-power you would choose if you were granted one. For an added challenge act out your chosen super power to your unit like when playing charades. Balloon racing - 1. Set up two chairs with fine string or fishing line tied taught between them and a straw with the bendy bit cut off threaded on. 2. Blow up a balloon (preferably a long rather than fat one) but don t tie the end, just hold it carefully, and tape the balloon to the straw. 3. When all the teams have done this, get them to let go of the balloon ends. The balloons should move along the string, and the first to reach the other chair is the winner.

Defence Against the Dark Arts Defence Against the Dark Arts is one of the subjects that is studied at Hogwarts, where witches and wizards learn to defend themselves against dark magic. Learn some basic self-defence moves. Fundraise for a charity that tackles domestic abuse. For example, a themed bake sale. Try making fake wounds and learning how to treat them. Instructions and ideas for activities and crafts: Making fake wounds - Bruise powder: 1. In a food bag, crush together the chalk (5 parts blue chalk, 2 parts red chalk the colour will vary considerably if other ratios are used). 2. Use cotton wool to apply the powder. Fake blood: 1. Pour 2-3tsp clear washing-up liquid or golden syrup (washing-up liquid produces a thicker blood that is better for burns or small cuts, while syrup makes slightly runnier blood, ideal for larger cuts or wounds that would bleed more) into a disposable cup and add a few drops of red food colouring. 2. Add a small amount of blue food colouring until the desired colour is achieved. 3. Apply with cotton wool buds or pads.

Care of Magical Creatures Care of Magical Creatures is one of the subjects studied at Hogwarts, where witches and wizards learn about magical creatures such as dragons, hippogriffs and salamanders. Use foods to create magical creatures. For example, use doughnuts to create a Loch Ness Monster, or put a marshmallow on a digestive and cover it with runny icing to make a ghost. Visit a local nature place or park or go on a walk. See what plants, trees or animals you can spot. Get involved with nature conservation locally. Make bird boxes/feeders or bug boxes. Make a sock monster. : Making a sock monster - 1. First choose your sock. This can be old or new, and even holey if you are prepared to work around the holes but it should be clean. 2. Pull your sock inside out and flatten it with the heel towards you. 3. Using a marker pen draw the shape of the top of the head including any ears or antennae. You can use the heel as the mouth if you like or the bottom. If you do that then your monster will easily sit up by itself. You need to decide that now to put this line in the right place. It is important that you do not cut the sock at this stage. 4. Using a needle and thread use a small running stitch or back stitch to stitch along the line you have drawn, securing at both ends. 5. Cut carefully about 5mm above the line. The spare bit of sock can be kept to use as arms. 6. Now draw a line below the heel for legs and feet. This time only sew part of the way along, so you can turn the monster right side out. 7. Now you can stuff your monster. Proper toy stuffing is best, but cotton wool or cut up tights will also work well. Push small amounts of stuffing in at a time and try to make sure it is even otherwise your monster will be lumpy. 8. When it is stuffed, sew up the rest of your monster. 9. If you want to add arms, use the spare bit of sock that you have cut off. Sew along the long side, and then stuff and attach to the body with a few stitches at the shoulder. 10. Now decorate, using felt, or buttons, fabric paint, ribbons, glue or embroidery. 11. Give your sock monster a name!

Potions Potions is one of the subjects studied at Hogwarts, where witches and wizards learn how to make potions like the Polyjuice potion, which changes your appearance for one hour. Decorate your own jars. You could use glass paints or pens and place a tea-light inside to make a candle lantern. Think about the kind of person you would be like to be and what you would like to do with your life. Discuss ways you could achieve this dream. Make your own face mask or face cream. Play the Who Am I? game. Instructions and ideas for games and activities: Playing the Who Am I? game - 1. Everyone in the unit writes down a name of a famous person on a post-it note or similar. 2. The post-it notes are then collected in and distributed at random to everyone in the unit. No one should know which name they have. 3. Everyone must then try to guess which name they have been given. You should ask questions that can only be answered with yes or no to work out who you are.

Transfiguration Transfiguration is one of the subjects studied at Hogwarts where witches and wizards learn to cast spells which change items into other items, such as changing a match into a needle. One branch of transfiguration is called animagi, which is when witches or wizards change themselves into animals. Try up-cycling to change materials into something new. You could try turning large plastic bottles into hanging plant container or birdfeeders, or kitchen roll tubes into a desk tidier. If you were an animagi, which animal would you turn into and why? Research your animal and the qualities associated with it. Play Rapidough. Use face paint to transform yourself or someone else into an animal. Websites for ideas for up-cycling - Playing Rapidough - 1. Before you play, the leader should create a set of cards, each with the name of an object on them (for example, chocolate, cat, promise badge, star, etc.). 2. When you play, the unit should be spilt up into groups of about five, and each group is given a tub of playdough. 3. One person from each group comes out to see the card which the leader is holding. They memorize the word on the card and run back to their group. 4. They must try to use the playdough to model the item, and the other members of their group should try to guess what the object is. They are not allowed to talk, and can only say yes or no to their groups seconds. 5. Once someone in the group has guessed the item correctly, someone runs up to tell the leader. The first team to correctly guess the object gets a point.

Divination Divination is one of the subjects studied at Hogwarts where witches and wizards learn to predict the future through reading tealeaves, palms, and crystal balls. Think about where you would like to be in ten years, and share your thoughts with the rest of your unit. Make your own crystal ball. Find out which star sign you are and look at what qualities are associated with that star sign. Go outside to look at the stars and see if you can identify any constellations. Spend a night under the stars or visit an observatory. Make a constellation in a jar. Making a Constellation in a Jar - 1. Take a clean jar and remove any paper of plastic on the outside. 2. Cover the outside of the jar in tinfoil. 3. Find a picture of the pattern of the stars a constellation. 4. Use a pencil to make holes in the tinfoil to recreate your chosen constellation. 5. Make smaller holes in the tinfoil at random for smaller stars. 6. Place a tea-light inside your jar and carefully light it. 7. If you wish to replace the lid, make sure that you first puncture it to create some air holes so the candle does not suffocate. 8. Enjoy your mini, indoor constellation!

Hogwarts Feasts One of the best bits of Hogwarts are the delicious feasts held in the Great Hall. Make bunting or banners to decorate your hall. Hold a feast. Try cooking something new. Decorate your own plate. This could be done by visiting a local decorating studio, or decorating a paper plate. Research healthy eating and discuss what food groups you need to include in your meals for a balanced diet.

Compulsory challenges There are two compulsory challenges to complete. 1. Throughout the books, the characters had to overcome many challenges. Challenge yourself to complete some sort of obstacle or assault course. This could be at a play-park or beach, on a homemade obstacle course in your meeting place, or at a low or high ropes course. It should be appropriately challenging for you or your unit. 2. At the end of each year at Hogwarts, there are end of year exams. Hold a sweetie meeting using Bertie Bott s Every-Flavour Beans, or similar jelly beans, to evaluate the activities you have done as part of this challenge. How to hold a sweetie meeting - 1. Everyone should sit in a circle, with a bowl of sweets in the middle. 2. Go round the circle again, everyone taking a sweet and saying something that they didn t enjoy so much during the challenge, or an activity that they didn t like. 3. Go round the circle, everyone taking one sweet and saying something that they enjoyed during the challenge, or their favourite activity. Alternative for Lones - Post something which you enjoyed and didn t enjoy from the challenge on the Lone s Blog or Facebook page.
