1 haagsekunstenaars.nl is an initiative by Stroom The Hague FINEKE VAN DER VEEN THE HAGUE ARTISTS start again, always start again Curiosity & wonder. Travel. Looking and seeing. Listening. Trying to express what you find in image and text. Inspiration. I m inspired by the work and life of Frida Kahlo since my first visit in 1983 to the Casa Azul in Mexico City her lust for life, ambiguity and style. Also, I m fascinated by the way artists, fashion designers, theorists, Chicanas, feminists etc. have appropriated her and have even have commercialised her (Frida s head on mugs and socks). Of course, there are other artists that inspired me but the Frida I discovered in 1983 will be my all-time heroine; I made her a little altar in my studio: a torso with her life story on it, and posters of her work I over-painted. Identity. And the way it develops. What defines who you are and who you will become? The past, the environment, gender, stage of life, colour of hair or skin? I tried to find some answers by making installations as Portable Past and The Redhead. Photography. Drawing and painting has given way to photography. It better suits my enthusiasm for collecting and keeping things. I do love to document what seems of no importance. Such as making photographs in all seasons of the route from my home to my studio as well as the metamorphosis of main street Scheveningen, or document the old wooden houses in Surinam, which will fall apart in the not-so- far future. And mannequins, a subject that came to me through serendipity and led me to make series of photo portraits in fourteen countries. Words & images. Words (thinking) and images (doing) struggle for my attention. What I do like to express sometimes fits into an image, but more often needs to be put into words. Maybe at my stage of life I have seen too many hypes and fashions in visual arts they don t longer interest me. Is that really true? No, that cannot be. You I- cannot live outside the spirit of the times. Time goes through you like water and leaves traces of silt. Recycle. The abundance of images, self-made or existing, stimulates my need to recycle cutting, pasting, repainting, to create something new. For example, the recently made (photo) collages combined with quotes by Virginia Woolf, like: It might be possible that the world itself is without meaning. Naast drie boeken (uitgegeven bij LM Publishers; aanwezig bij STROOM)

2 resulteerden de projecten in diverse exposities in Suriname en Nederland. Afro-Surinamers, hindostanen en Javanen) en bouwen (historische bouwkunde).
