9 'I expect painting will save me from drowning. I can get overwhelmed by so much input. But when I paint the desert is sand, the ocean is salty water, the sun is hot, the street is dusty, the coffee black, the egg fresh and I focus on the right thickness of the paint.' Delaere and Doorenweerd traveled separately for a month within the epic natural context of California, the desert, the mountains and canyons, the sea. Now they are staying at La Brea studio artist residency in Los Angeles together. Any other place would have been ok too, but Los Angeles poses a specific challenge. Los Angeles and California are very present in our collective consciousness. The desert, the movies, Agnes Martin, David Lynch. 'How to work' was a central theme in the project named 'Zinging Tangerine' Koen Delaere and Jeroen Doorenweerd did in the Vleeshal, where the museum was their shared studio space, open to the public while they were making the works for the duo show. This time California and Los Angeles have been the studio and the backdrop for producing and presenting paintings. Delaere and Doorenweerd shared experiences and sensations working on site, producing work. The input was similar, the output very different. A new Zinging Tangerine magazine will be produced after the residency in collaboration with Lorenzo Benedetti, Harryette Mullen and Marc Leblanc. 'Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.' (Jack Kerouac, On the Road) The La Brea Studio, 144 N. La Brea Ave LA (Entrance in the alley at the back) Danny First is an artist that for two years now is hosting out of town artists at his studio. The studio is around 2400 sq in a prime location on La Brea Ave just south of Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles. Artists such as James Krone, Christian Rosa, Evan Nesbit, Gergo Szinyova, Michiel Ceulers, Bas van den Hurk and Jean Baptist Bernadet are a few of the artists that already worked at his space. 10 Koen Delaere Brugge 1970 B. Delaere studied Fine Art and Philosophy at Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg. His work has been show extensively worldwide at, amongst others, Gebr. Lehmann Gallery Dresden, De Pont museum Tilburg, Autocenter, Berlin, MIS Sao Paulo Brasil, Anonymous Gallery New York, Cell projectspace London and Fons Welters Gallery Amsterdam; Recent solo exhibitions include Rod Barton Gallery Brussels, Halsey Mckay Gallery East- Hampton NY, Mike Weiss Gallery NY, Van Horn Gallery Dusseldorf, Gerhard Hofland Gallery Amsterdam, Centraal Museum Utrecht and De Vleeshal Middelburg ; upcoming shows and presentations at Christian Larsen Gallery Stockholm, CCA Andratx Mallorca, Expo Chicago with Van Horn Gallery and Art Vienna with Gerhard Hofland Gallery. In 2006 he won the prestigious Wolvecampprijs for painting. Delaere sometimes curates and he teaches at BFA Artez Arnhem and FHK Tilburg. He currently lives and works in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Jeroen Doorenweerd (Terneuzen, 15 juli 1962), lives and works in Tilburg Jeroen Doorenweerd is a Dutch painter, sculptor and installation artist. Doorenweerd studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg and Ateliers `63 in Haarlem. His teachers were a.o. René Daniëls, Marlene Dumas and Jan Dibbets. Some random projects Doorenweerd did since 1990: a wooden catwalk for Museum Dhondt Dhaenens, Belgium, a garden in De Pont foundation in Tilburg, a prison swimming pool, a webcam on top of Dutch customs building and containerscanner at the maasvlakte, a greenhouse for drug addicts, a boathouse and sloop for an industrial area, the National Firefighter monument, the Willem Wilminksquare in Enschede, the analog room with music and a view at a painting by Jan van Goyen in de Lakenhal in Leiden, a drifter in a factory hall, a painting battle at the Centraal Museum In Utrecht, Zinging Tangerine in museum de Vleeshal in Middelburg, a residency in villa van Wassenhove at museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Deurle, Belgium. 'Painting is a form of meditation, the integration of the artist with the process of creating and with the material. Seen in this light the paintings, on the one hand, and the art works in the public domain on the other, constitute the Yin and Yang in Jeroen's oeuvre: not in conflict but complementing one another in their antithesis. The art projects displayed in public spaces come into being when the action of the artist is combined with the dialogue with those involved and with the surroundings: the social aspect is fundamental. In the paintings, however, the action of the artist is coupled with coincidence and intuition, which are part of the process.'
