2 ALFONS WALDE The photographic work For decades the photographs by painter Alfons Walde ( ) were hidden in crates in the artist s estate. In December 2014 they were shown for the first time at WestLicht Museum. The world-famous landscape painter Walde turns out to be an equally masterful photographer with a focus on the nude. His staged pictures range from classical poses from the tradition of art history to erotic and partly pornographic scenes. His black & white photographs from the early twenties are reminiscent of works by Egon Schiele and Koloman Moser, later on Walde played a significant role as a pioneer of colour photography. Starting from 1932 he used his Leica camera with the recently invented colour film and made slides, which fascinate the viewer by their painterly appearance. Apart from his nude studies, Walde also took landscapes, portraits and architecture photographs, which frequently served as inspiration for his paintings. Exclusive offer: Limited Editions The elaborate restoration of the early colour slides and the negatives made it possible to produce prints. The Fine Art Prints in colour from the original slides and the black & white gelatin silver prints from the original negatives are offered in a limited edition of 5 incl. a certificate of authenticity. Each print is numbered, stamped and signed by the estate administrator and artist s grandson Michael Walde-Berger and WestLicht/OstLicht owner Peter Coeln. All works come with acid-free museum passepartouts and wooden frames. 23 Biography Alfons Walde is one of the most famous Austrian landscape painters of the 20th century, known not only in his homeland, but also worldwide. He was born in Oberndorf near Kitzbühel on 8 February 1891 and in 1910 moved to Vienna, where he took up studies at the Technical Academy. Walde s first exhibitions in Innsbruck (1911) and at the Vienna Secession (1913) followed. Walde s first contact with photography as a medium was before WW I, possibly inspired by his uncle, the publisher Sepp Ritzer. In 1921 he first exhibited his depictions of nudes publicly at the Innsbruck art dealer Unterberger, garnering mixed reactions. The booming ski tourism of the inter-war period and the fashionable winter guests congregating in Kitzbühel not only provided him with a potent group of customers, but were also reflected in his choice of motifs. In 1924 Walde won the two first prizes in a competition sponsored by the Tyrolean State Tourism Office in the category»winter pictures«. During the course of the 1920s, Walde had begun to take photographs more intensively. In 1929 he designed and built the Berghaus on top of the Hahenkamm Mountain, where most of the presented images were shot, especially the colour photographs which he took from the mid-1930s onwards, using the new Agfacolor film and his Leica saw the publication of Walde s first official poster advertising Tyrol, for which he used his painting Der Aufstieg (The Ascent, 1930). The following years were characterized by an increasing number of exhibitions abroad; at the same time, a series of forgeries of his paintings began to appear. The war and first post-war years meant a withdrawal into private life for Walde, who focused more and more on architectural projects. In 1956 he was given the title of professor, a late official recognition of his artistic oeuvre. Alfons Walde died on 11 December 1958 in the house of his sister Berta in Kitzbühel.
