1 PRESS INFORMATION PHOTOKINA 2010 THE EVOLUTION OF IMPOSSIBLE S NEW GENERATION INSTANT FILMS Impossible proudly introduces the 2 nd generation of new analog instant films for classic Polaroid cameras Two years ago it seemed rather impossible that we would ever attend anything like the Photokina. Back then also many other things seemed impossible. Like developing and producing new instant films for traditional Polaroid cameras. At that time Polaroid had just announced that they would stop production of instant film. Our aim was to save analog instant photography from extinction by manufacturing new analog instant films. So we started The Impossible Project. At the last minute Impossible saved the last preserved Polaroid production plant in Enschede (NL), and started to develop a new film with a small team of former Polaroid employees. Carrying production of analog instant photography into the 21 st century demanded the complete re-invention of instant integral film, as unavailable or banned components necessary for production had to be replaced. An enormous amount of passionate research, studies, analysis and verifications was accomplished within a very limited timeframe, supported by partners like Ilford Photo (Harman Technology Limited, UK) or InovisCoat (GER). In March 2010 the sensation spread like wildfire: Impossible released its first new instant film material and saved analog instant photography from extinction with the PX 100 and 600 Silver Shade. Continuous development and improvement of the film enabled us to bring further and updated versions of Impossible instant films on the market. At Photokina 2010 we are proud to introduce another, revolutionary big step in the ongoing development of analog instant films and to introduce two new Impossible instant films for traditional Polaroid cameras: 600 Silver Shade UV+ and PX 70 Color Shade. 2 NEW IMPOSSIBLE INSTANT FILMS proudly presented at Photokina 2010 PX 70 Color Shade New color film for Polaroid SX 70 cameras This new color film for Polaroid SX 70 camera models is the advancement of the PX 70 Color Shade First Flush. Other than the First Flush Edition, this PX 70 Color Shade film edition provides much more contrasty and true to live color pictures. Its existence is a real analog miracle, as not even the most optimistic experts believed in the re-invention of the highly complex instant color system. Combined with a highly sensitive overall exposure performance and strong characteristics, it allows achieving breathtakingly charming results. Film Speed: ISO / ASA 125 / DIN 23 Format: 3,5 x 4,3 in. The special and newly added UV+ sheet guarantees improvement of the Black & White tone as well as an increased stability and overall performance. 3 FURTHER IMPOSSIBLE NEWS proudly presented at Photokina Impossible Integral film for the fabled 20 x 24 Camera For the first time in the history of analog instant photography, Impossible dared to produce integral instant film suitable for the fabled Polaroid 20 inch x 24 inch camera! To do so, we used the latest Impossible Silver and Color Shade chemistry, filled into several aligned pods of the 8 x 10 film (wherefore we bought the production machinery last year). Together with Jan Hinzdo, the owner of this legendary camera, and the visitors of the Impossible Soirée on September 21 in Cologne we embarked on this exciting adventure. It came to a happy end that saw the presentation of 9 breathtaking portraits taken of visitors and guests In the future, Impossible will strengthen its relations with the 20 x 24 Studio in NYC, fighting to make the original Polaroid based 20 x 24 material available throughout the world as well as developing a worldwide 20 x 24 contest. The Impossible Battery So far Impossible has been using old stock of original Polaroid batteries. The new generation of Impossible instant film packs will start featuring a freshly produced Impossible Battery. The Impossible Impulse Battery has a new design, a capacity of 750 mah, a highly improved temperature independence and will last for much more than one film pack. Therefore and because we re thinking green, Impossible will launch a special Impossible Battery Return Program with the availability of Impossible s new instant film generations. A rechargeable version of the Impossible Impulse Battery is under development. The Impossible Project Spaces Due to the big success of the Impossible Project Spaces in Vienna (Austria) and New York City (USA), we are proud to announce the opening of a third Impossible Project Space in Toyko (Japan) in November Impossible Project Spaces are exclusively dedicated to analog instant photography, offering Impossible films, old Polaroid cameras and films, books, exhibitions, workshops and much more. 4 The Impossible Design by Achim Heine / HLZ The mastermind of the new identity and design of all Impossible products and activities ist Achim Heine from the agency Heine/Lenz/Zizka in Berlin. The Corporate Design emphasizes the analog quality of Impossible by clarity and haptic details. Also the nomenclature of the new films as well as the packaging design was developed by Heine/Lenz/Zizka. The agency was founded in 1989 and is amongst the top 2o design agencies in Germany. Special Award by TIPA at Photokina Award Ceremony The Impossible Project was awarded with a Special Award at the Technical Image Press Association TIPA Awards Ceremony 2010 on September 21 at the Photokina. The official comment of the Jury says: TIPA honours the initiative of The Impossible Project to bring classical instant film for usage in traditional Polaroid cameras back to the market. Instant film has been and still is an important media for artistic photography, but disappeared after Polaroid decided to end its production. The Impossible Project s instant film s format, sensitivity and manipulability with a unique, new appearance of silver based, monochrome shades.
