1 Arts & Crafts This week in Play School we explore various art and craft forms that are enjoyed by both children and adults. This series aims to encourage children to develop self expression, creativity and an awareness of the world around, them using a range of activities, stories and films that are enjoyable and informative. Fine motor skills, language, colour and shape recognition are other basic skills that will be extended throughout the series. 2 MAKE AND DO Some different coloured paint in a dish A spoon Paper How to Make a Butterfly Painting Spoon some paint onto the paper, it can be in the centre, but anywhere is fine. Fold the paper in half. Use your hand to rub over paper, spreading the paint in all directions. Open up the painting to see a colourful butterfly pattern. Page 2 of 10

4 MAKE AND DO How to Make a Mosaic Plate and Nature Plate Plaster of Paris Play dough Natural objects like feathers, large pebbles, pine needles, seed pods, leaves, flowers 2 plastic plates Make some Plaster of Paris and spoon wet mixture into a shallow plastic dish. How to Make a Flower Tower Artificial flowers A wire waste paper bin Plastic netting Turn the waste paper bin upside down. Take a bunch of artificial flowers and poke them through the holes in the basket. Start at the bottom and work your way up to the top, building a flower tower. Before the plaster starts to harden, poke in bits and pieces to decorate the plate. For the nature plate, poke seed pods, leaves and feathers into the plaster. For the mosaic plate, cut some colourful play dough into squares and poke them into the plaster to make any pattern you wish. Page 4 of 10

Take some plastic jugs into the bath to have fun pouring. Page 5 of 10

6 MAKE AND DO How to Make a Water Fountain Various plastic containers, buckets, colanders, chopping boards, plastic baskets A watering can The idea is to build up a plastic tower with the plastic containers listed. Some have holes, others are used to give the tower height and to let the water run over them. When the tower is built, use a watering can to pour water into the top of the tower. The water will go through the plastic containers with holes and fall over the other containers. How to Make a Doughasaurus Play dough of various colours You can make dinosaurs from any coloured dough you wish. Make them any shapes you wish. Spikes, long tails, horns and wings will make your doughasaurus interesting. How to Make a Scrapbook Diary Glue Scrapbook Bits and pieces that you may collect on a special day out or at a special event e.g. tickets, photos, drawings, wrappers, stickers, sand, leaves On each page of your scrapbook, glue things down wherever you like. If you go to the beach you may wish to glue down some sand, a photo of you at the beach or a sticker of a bucket and spade. You may wish to do some drawings on the page to decorate it. Other pages could be a diary about: - A day at the museum - Your birthday - Out in the garden - Your special friends and family Page 6 of 10

8 MAKE AND DO How to Make a Jungle Mural A large sheet of paper A texta Paint Green paper for leaves On a large sheet of paper draw some jungle animals with a texta. How to Make a Fruit Collage or Fruit Painting Paint Brushes Coloured paper scraps Glue Paper Use paint to paint the animals. You can paint them any colour or pattern you wish. Stick on some green leaves and crepe paper vines. Look at the shape of some real fruit. Now try and paint the same shape and colour of the fruit onto the paper. You may want to do a fruit collage, where you can tear paper into fruit shapes and glue them onto paper. You can compare real fruit to your painting or collage, thinking about shape, colour and size. Take your paper, paint or crayons down to the beach. Draw or paint whatever you see. Make some dress ups from different things around the house. Page 9 of 10

10 MAKE AND DO How to Make a Dough Print of the Sea Play dough rolled out flat, a plastic spoon or things to make patterns in the dough, e.g. a popsicle stick, paint Use the dough roller or popsicle stick to make waves by pressing into the dough. Use the spoon to press down into the dough to make a turtle shape. The handle can be used to press four flippers into the body. Paint over the dough with paint, then put some paper on top. Gently rub over the back of the paper. Lift it up and you will see your print. You may like to press other things into the dough. For example your hands or feet. When you paint over the dough and put paper over the paint, the shape of your hands and feet will appear on the paper. How to Make Finger Painting Prints Paint Your fingers A smooth surface Put the paint onto a smooth surface, like a table or plastic table cloth. Use your fingers to make patterns in the paint. Put a piece of paper over the top of the paint and gently press down. Lift up the paper and you will see your finger painting print. How to Make a Thong Print T-shirt T-shirts Brush Paint (that will not wash out) Cardboard Old thongs Take an old thong and put paint thickly on the sole. Put some cardboard inside the t-shirt so that the paint won t go through to the back. Press the thong down onto the t-shirt making some thong prints. Use different colours Page 10 of 10
