1 5 th Grade Language Arts Syllabus & Objectives Reading (Teachers rotate units/one unit per quarter) Unit 1: Weeks 1-3: Short stories spotlighting fiction and non-fiction articles on rattlesnakes, wolves and the westward movement. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Wolves, Children of the Wild West, Along the Santa Fe Trail and Rattlers. Accelerated: Children of the Wild West, Sleds on Boston Common, Revolutionary War readers and Wild West readers. Objectives (skills to be learned): main ideas and details, summarizing, point of view and fact vs opinion. Weeks 4-6: Animal Fiction Novels Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Wolf Shadows, Runt, Child of the Wolves, Shiloh, Rascal, Old Yeller, The Trouble with Tuck and Because of Winn Dixie. Accelerated group: World of Weirdness(science fiction and fantasy) stories including but not limited to All Summer in a Day, The Fun They Had, War of the Worlds, Little Green Men, Hey, Down There, and unsolved mysteries. Objectives (skills to be learned): Story elements. Weeks 7-9: Short stories spotlighting historical fiction and fantasy genres. Accelerated group: spotlighting unsolved mysteries and science fiction/fantasy genres. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Black Cowboy, Wild Horses, Sleds on Boston Common, Zathura, Great Grandmother s Gourd, Weslandia and A Historic Journey. Accelerated group: A Wrinkle in Time and Ghost of the Lagoon. Objectives (skills to be learned): inference and generalizations, the elements of fantasy vs realistic fiction and figurative language (i.e., similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, idioms, proverbs and hyperbole).
2 Reading- Unit 2: Weeks 1-3: Realistic Fiction Novels. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: On My Honor, Flying Solo, Frindle, Mick Harte Was Here, Night of the Twisters, Number the Stars, Volcano, Head for the Hills and Davy Crockett Saves the World. Accelerated: Night of the Twisters and Kids Discover: Volcanoes, Tornadoes, Hurricanes and Earthquakes. Objectives (skills to be learned): compare/contrast, text structure and tone. Weeks 4-6: OPEN: In2Books (In2Books are theoretically scatter throughout the curriculum, but because of scheduling issues, we don t know when they will be included in the curriculum). *This is an on-going classroom program that continues all year long in all units. The accelerated reading group DOES NOT participate in In2Books. Units and novels include such topics as: bullies, families, Ancient Egypt, inventors, heroes, trickster tales, Why?(folktales), weather and natural disasters. Accelerated group: natural disasters. Objectives (skills to be learned): theme, context clues, story structure, characteristics of fiction vs non-fiction, setting, biographies, compare/contrast, fact/opinion, main ideas, story mapping, point of view/author s purpose, problem/solution, informational elements, retelling and how to use graphic aids. Weeks 7-9: Short stories spotlighting natural disasters and inventions. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Earthquakes, Hurricanes Disaster Cards, and 100 Mistakes that Worked. Accelerated group: The Phantom Tollbooth. Objectives (skills to be learned): compare/contrast, cause/effect, chronological order, problem/solution, propaganda and fact/opinion.
3 Reading- Unit 3: Weeks 1-3: Adventure/Fantasy Novels. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and My Side of the Mountain. Accelerated group: Great Illustrated Classics including but not limited to Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Objectives (skills to be learned): characters, compare/contrast, prediction, sequence, foreshadowing and plot. Weeks 4-6: The Solar System and the Arctic/Antarctic Polar Regions. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: The Outer Planets, Planet Cards, and Matthew Henson, and Kids Discover: The Arctic. Accelerated group: From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Weeks 7-9: Short stories spotlighting traditional tales, folktales, fairy tales, myths and legends. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Ananasi and the Spider, Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky, Raven, Stone Soup, and The Boy of the Three- Year Nap. Accelerated group: fairy tales, folklore and myths from literature basal including but not limited to The Bamboo Beads, Why Chickens Don t Have Ears, In the Land of Small Dragon, Arachne, King Thrushbeard, The Boy Who Flew, and Proserpina. Also, provided there is enough time, the novel, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle may be a part of the final weeks of Unit 3. Objectives (skills to be learned): theme, compare/contrast and story elements.
4 Reading- Unit 4: Weeks 1-3: Mystery Novels. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: Closed for the Season, Chasing Vermeer, The Red Blazer Girls, A-Z Mysteries, The Dollhouse Murders and Sammy Keyes. Accelerated group: Shark: Challengers of the Deep and mystery novels (see above). Objectives (skills to be learned): elements of a mystery, comparing and contrasting stories in the same genre, theme and author s perspective. Weeks 4-6: Short Story Biographies. Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: a variety of short and longer-in-length biographies of all types of individuals. Accelerated group: challenge and courage themed stories from literature book including but not limited to Erik Wehenmeyer, The Summer of Fire, The Great Serum Race and Interrupted Journey. Accelerated group novel: My Brother Sam Is Dead. Objectives (skills to be learned): elements of a biography, supporting details, important vs unnecessary details, compare/contrast, debating skills, summarizing and paraphrasing. Weeks 7-9: In2Books novels. Units that will be used include: bullies, families, Ancient Egypt, inventors, heroes, trickster tales, folktales, weather and natural disasters. Accelerated group: biographies (see above). Stories and novels that may be used but not limited to include: The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963, Dear Mr. Henshaw, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Mummies, Alexander Graham Bell, Lon Po Po, and Shreddermann. Objectives (skills to be learned): theme, context clues, story structure, characteristics of fiction vs non-fiction, setting, biographies, compare/contrast, fact/opinion, main ideas, story mapping, point of view/author s purpose, problem/solution, informational elements, retelling and how to use graphic aids.
5 5 th Grade Grammar Syllabus and Objectives Using GrammarPunk grammar program, 5 th grade students will learn/review/apply: Nouns Plural Nouns Possessive Nouns Verbs Verb Tense past, present and future Prepositions Adverbs Adjectives Conjunctions Interjections Punctuation to be learned/reviewed through GrammarPunk includes: Capitalization Periods Commas Underlining Quotation Marks Italics Colons Semi-colons Apostrophes Exclamation point Parenthesis *Most of the GrammarPunk work is completed during class time. There will be some occasions when worksheets may be brought home or outside assignments may be required.
6 5 th Grade Language Arts Grade Breakdowns Spelling-10% Grammar-10% AR tests-15% (A total of 8 AR tests= 2 books a quarter; 1 book report a quarter)** Daily Work-50% Quizzes/Study Island formal assessments-15% Language Class Time minutes Reading minutes- GrammarPunk*/Spelling* *Spelling: Mondays (pretest and assignment given for entire week); Fridays (final test and homework due). Spelling lists are provided separately on the webpage. *GrammarPunk: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (most work will be completed in class with occasional outside assignments). **Eight Accelerated Reader (AR) tests will be assigned during the school year (TWO per quarter). Out of the eight books, four require book reports in addition to the AR tests. One of the four book reports will be a video book report to be completed during THIRD QUARTER.
