7 Sample 1: Section A, Question 1 Comments (i) Although no real similarities are drawn between characters thoughts, credit is given to the way in which this response develops fluently and well beyond a full coverage of what each is thinking about. Clearly points out how Ralph thinks not just about what to say at the Assembly, but also the best way to deliver his speech in order to have the most impact. The aspect of self-awareness is identified as a gradual decline not only in terms of clothing and behaviour, but also language. Despite the discussion of Iago starting weakly with irrelevant mention of the dialogue, the response here quickly redeems itself by developing into a good character analysis of Iago (e.g. noting his intense jealousy), Cassio (e.g. flirtatious manner ) and Othello (e.g. using Othello s good qualities and twisting them into weakness ). Shows a full understanding of Iago s scheme, what motivated him and how he plans to carry it out (ii) A largely relevant and logical response here. (iii) Maintains clear contrast throughout answer with effective support. Answer extends further into thematic significance. 7

14 Section A, Question 1 Comments (i) Despite occasional difficulties in phrasing, a well-supported and well-balanced answer which introduces an aspect of comparison from the outset. In addition to explaining the details of Ralph s thoughts, this answer also points out Ralph s moment of self-awareness about maturity, and supports this well. The candidate also notes how he derives inspiration from external surroundings. The discussion about Iago is correctly confined to the contents of his soliloquy and mentions not only what Iago is plotting, but also how he plans to achieve this. The answer further expands impressively into a character analysis of Cassio and Othello. (ii) Shows a perceptive understanding of Golding s use of symbolism. (iii) Identifies differences in the way characters are thinking. Discussion touches on the philosophical nature of Ralph s thoughts, as well as the significant fact that he is a child compared to the adult Iago. 14

The appropriate use of realistic and everyday language and dialogue help to establish the background of the characters and to create tension and conflicts.
