1 WOLMER S BOYS SCHOOL ENGLISH LITERATURE COURSE OUTLINE FIRST FORM SUMMER TERM 2018 Genre of Focus - Drama Main Text: Plays For Today Selected play Ti-Jean And His Brothers by Derek Walcott Rationale The first form year of the secondary education programme marks a critical time in the development of students. The literary skills that are required for the development of competence (and ultimately mastery) in this area must be effectively taught. As such, this unit will create the opportunity for the students to develop an interest in Literature and focus on the analysis of drama as a discrete literary mode by reading by Derek Walcott and watching a live performance of a play. Students will be taught how to interpret plays beyond the literal level through analyzing how the elements and features of the genre help to create meaning. Additionally, a student-centered classroom will be adopted which will enable students to discover the beauty/complexities of English Literature through their own engagement and critical thinking. General Objectives By the end of the unit students should: 1. Understand goals and expectations. 2. Know the elements of drama. 3. Know the features of drama. 4. Be familiar with the prescribed play. 5. Know the dramatic techniques. 6. Substantiate interpretation of texts with adequate and relevant details. 7. Construct character analysis. 8. Identify and discuss the presentation of themes. 9. Respond sensitively to literature by making accurate oral and written analysis. 10. Know how to construct an effective essay. 1
