New York Practice New York 6 English Language Arts

To the Student New York Ready English Language Arts Practice is a review program for the New York State Testing Program English Language Arts Test. This book has three practice tests. In each practice test, you will respond to 34 ELA items (26 multiple-choice, 6 short-response, and 2 extended-response). Most of these items ask you about literary and informational passages you will read. Others ask about a literary passage you will listen to. The practice passages and items are similar to those you will find on the New York Testing Program English Language Arts Test. Becoming familiar with the test format will help you succeed on the New York State Testing Program English Language Arts Test. Your teacher will explain how you will do the practice tests and how to record your answers. Be sure to follow the directions for each practice test. As you complete the practice tests, read or listen to the passages and answer the questions carefully. Record your answers in your book. Remember to write out your answers or to fill in the answer bubbles completely. If you change an answer, you must erase your first answer fully. While you work on each practice test, use the Testing Tips below. Read these helpful tips carefully. They can make you a better test-taker. Testing Tips for Answering Questions Read each question carefully before you try to answer it. Be sure you know what the question is asking you to do. For multiple-choice questions, read all the answer choices before you choose your answer. Cross out any answer choices that you know are wrong. Then, fill in the correct answer bubble. For short- and extended-response response questions, be sure you answer the question you are being asked. Also, support your answer using details from the passage. Write your answer on the lines or space provided. Read the question one more time. Then check that your answer makes sense. 3 Part One: Reading D irections Read this article about a special natural event. Then answer questions 1 through 5. Colorful Skies by Sigrid Olaf There s a major storm brewing, but don t run inside. If you re lucky enough to be in the area, you won t want to miss a second of this spectacular event. Don t worry. You re not in any danger, except perhaps of being swept away by the beauty of it all. As you may have guessed, this is no ordinary storm. For one thing, it s taking place in space, not on Earth. Fiery explosions that originated on the surface of the sun are causing a physical reaction in Earth s atmosphere. The result is a dazzling, colorful display of swirling lights across the sky. It is the aurora borealis. You may know it as the northern lights. The northern lights are an awesome sight. Their beauty has mystified people for thousands of years. Although observers haven t always had the knowledge to explain what was happening, they tried. The great thinker Aristotle, who lived from 384 b.c. to 322 b.c., believed that the shimmering lights happened when the sun s heat collided with gaseous vapors rising from Earth s surface. In the 1600s, the astronomer and scientist Galileo had a different idea. He thought that the colorful pattern of lights was the reflection of sunlight from the coming dawn. Galileo named the lights the aurora borealis, which means northern dawn. 1 Go On

For centuries, people held on to the theory that the northern lights were a reflection of sunlight. Only recently have scientists acquired the knowledge to explain what actually causes this special event. The northern lights occur when electrons and protons shoot from the sun during a space storm. These charged particles hurtle toward Earth. Most of them are repelled by Earth s magnetic field. They never enter our atmosphere. Some particles are guided to the magnetic poles in Earth s polar regions. There they transfer their energy to atoms and molecules in the atmosphere. These excited atoms and molecules eventually release this extra energy as light. The best time to see the northern lights is between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a clear dark winter night. Auroras can be red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The color depends on the kind of gases that the particles collide with at different heights in the atmosphere. The northern lights have been seen as far away from Earth s poles as the equator. But that happens only once every two hundred years or so. On the other hand, in northern Norway, the northern lights are an almost nightly event. In Fairbanks, Alaska, they occur five to ten times a month. Along the United States and Canadian border, they can be viewed about two to four times a year. People who live in the northern parts of Europe and the United States may see them once every ten years. So some dark, clear winter night, if you look up and see swirling streaks of lights moving in waves across the sky, count yourself lucky. Mother Nature is about to dazzle your senses. For many people, it s a once in a lifetime event. So enjoy the show. 1 Which statement best describes the way the author attracts the reader s interest in the first paragraph? A B C D The author makes the paragraph longer than any paragraph in the article. The author uses several short sentences. The author uses lively language to describe an exciting event. The author explains an important scientific principle. 2 Read this sentence from the passage. You re not in any danger, except perhaps of being swept away by the beauty of it all. The author most likely wrote this sentence to suggest that A B C D seeing the aurora borealis can be a powerful experience the aurora borealis can create heavy winds the aurora borealis is sometimes dangerous to viewers it s best to see the aurora borealis near the ocean 2

Part Two: Listening and Writing D irections You are going to listen to a story called Goodbye, Pete. Then you will answer some questions to show how well you understood what was read. You will listen to the story twice. As you listen carefully, you may take notes on the story anytime you wish during the readings. You may use these notes to answer the questions that follow. Use the space on Pages 14 and 15 for your notes. Notes 14

Part Three: Reading and Writing D irections You are going to read an article about pirates called A Pirate s Life for Her and a story about a Revolutionary War soldier called A Brave and Loyal Soldier. You will answer questions and write about what you have read. You may look back at the articles as often as you like. A Pirate s Life for Her by Kathleen Graham When Robert Louis Stevenson s stepson pleaded with him to write something interesting, the nineteenth-century author responded by writing Treasure Island. After all, who wouldn t enjoy a story about buried treasure and a one-eyed, peg-legged pirate? Most people think that all pirates were bloodthirsty men. So, it may surprise you to know that not all these villains were men. Women have been pirates, too. One famous and daring female pirate was Anne Bonny. Born in Ireland sometime in the late 1690s, Anne and her family moved to America and settled in Charleston, South Carolina, when Anne was just a girl. Anne had a fierce temper and a willingness to fight at the drop of a hat. The rough and seedy docks of Charleston appealed to Anne s defiant nature. And when she was just sixteen, much to her family s dismay, she fell in love and married a small-time pirate named James Bonny. The two moved to what is now Nassau in the Bahamas, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, which was overrun with pirates. However, Anne was not happy. She left her husband and shipped off to sea. Jack Rackham, a pirate known as Calico Jack, was the ship s captain. South Carolina GULF OF MEXICO Nassau ATLANTIC OCEAN Women were considered bad luck on pirate ships. There was a strict code that forbade them from being members of the crew. So, with Jack s approval, Anne donned men s clothing and pretended to be a pirate. The life of a pirate suited Anne s feisty personality and her desire for excitement and adventure. Disguised as a man, she had no trouble fighting 21 Go On

alongside hardened pirates. For most of the time that she was on board, the other pirates did not know that she was a woman. They were also not aware that there was another woman on the ship. Mary Read was born in England around the same time as Anne Bonny. Mary spent most of her life disguised as a boy. As a young woman, she signed up to serve as a foot soldier in the English military, where she fought bravely on the battlefield. Her friendship with another soldier turned to love when she revealed to him that she was a woman. The two married, but after his death, Mary once again disguised herself as a man. This time she signed up as a sailor on a Dutch ship bound for the West Indies. When the ship was attacked by Calico Jack and his pirate crew, Mary was captured and brought on board. No one knew she was a woman, and Mary, too, adopted the life of a pirate. It wasn t long before Anne discovered Mary s true identity, and the two women became friends, while keeping their secret from the rest of the crew. Both women, along with Captain Jack, were captured in a fierce battle at sea. Captain Jack was hanged for his crimes. Mary Read died of a fever while in prison. Anne Bonny was not hanged, but her fate is not known. 22

31 The author of A Pirate s Life for Her describes several events in Anne Bonny s life. Complete the chart below by describing three of these events and explaining how they changed the course of Anne Bonny s life. Use details from the article in your answer. Event 1 Event 2 Event 3 32 Using details from A Pirate s Life for Her, explain the difference between how Anne Bonny and Mary Read became pirates. 23 Go On
