1 Suffixes modify and extend meaning. Suffixes are always at the end of a word. Most of the time, they alter the grammatical function or the part of speech of the original word. EXAMPLE: The word create can be turned into several different words. When used as create, it is a noun. When used as creator, creation, creativity, or creature, it forms a noun. When used as creative, it becomes an adjective. Finally, when used as creatively, it becomes an adverb. Another example is the word democrat. When used as democrat, or democracy, it is a noun.
