Students watch the video clip on the causes of WWI pp Students answer question 3 on p17 this can be used as a formal assessment. Students can discuss Long and short term causes. Resources KS3 History: Technology, War and Identities (A World Study After 1900) Wilkes/Ball Moral: can Ferdinand s death be used to to justify war, or was it simply the excuse the world needed Extended writing task ( q3) Did Princip start the Great War? Section 3 Trench Warfare Outcome To describe the conditions inside the trenches LEVEL 4 To explain the conditions inside the trenches and provide detailed examples to show LEVEL 5 To analyse and explain trench conditions and how this affected the moral of the troops LEVEL 6 What is trench warfare? Why were the trenches built? Understanding What conditions existed inside the trenches? Source analysis trench letters Content Read through the Trenches power point and discuss the issues that arise Label trench diagram for students to place in exercise books Students to work in pairs and work through the trench information sheets. Section 5 War posters and Propaganda (2) Outcome To create a basic propaganda poster/ poem LEVEL 4 To use research to create a detailed propaganda poster/poem LEVEL 5 To use research to create a detailed and historically accurate poster/poem based on evidence LEVEL 6 War poetry Recruitment and propaganda methods Understanding Source analysis Content Students research poetry of Wilfred Owen/ Siegfried Sassoon students may bring in other poets Encourage students to read poems out students work in pairs to analyse meanings of them of ones they have found Students create their own WWI poem less able students can create a war poster (based on the poems).
