Big Lion Joe Ott and the club members welcomed four new members to the Manhattan Lions Club. New Lions inducted by club president Big Lion Joe Ott were Matthew Olson, Marianne Cullers, Robert Cullers, and Catherine Bolte. Lion Don Robertson noted that the Highway 18 clean-up, which was held on Saturday morning, May 6 th was completed in record time by 14 Lions Club members, also setting a record for club member participation. Lion Gary Adkins, District 17-A LCIF Coordinator, presented the program regarding LCIF. Grants from LCIF total $13 Billion for Disaster Relief and Disaster Preparedness, Saving Sight, Supporting Youth, Humanitarian Needs including fighting measles and for Diabetic assistance. May 22, 2017 Membership Meeting The Manhattan Lions Club met on May 22 nd at the Four Points by Sheraton. Guests were introduced, including Tom and Karen Roberts, program speakers for the evening, Tom s parents, PDG Tom Roberts and wife Dixie and prospective member, Mark Musleh, sponsored by Lion Jay Davis. Gary Adkins Among items discussed was the Riley County Fair, for which the Manhattan Sunflower Lions and the Manhattan Lions participate in the parking of cars. Opportunities to assist with the Lions Mobile Screening Unit at the Kansas State Fair, September 8 th through the 17 th in Hutchinson, KS will be available Lion Mickey Keithley reported that since August 2016, the Vision Screening Committee had completed 2525 vision screenings in and around the Greater Manhattan Community. Appointments are being scheduled for the next school year beginning in August. The first screenings scheduled are for the Leonardville Lions Club Pancake Feed and Hullabaloo in Leonardville. Page 1
2 Tom and Karen Roberts, speakers for the evening, provided a fascinating look at a few of the more than 200 lighthouses they have visited in the past twenty years as a hobby. Most of the lighthouses they have seen were in the U.S., however a few in Peru and in France were on their agenda as they traveled. The first lighthouse in the U.S. was built in 1716 in Boston. The purposes of the lighthouses were to guide merchant ships from Europe safely to ports in the U.S. The federal government now owns all of the existing lighthouses, and many have been rebuilt, serving as tourist sites. The most famous lighthouse in the U.S. is the Statue of Liberty Tom (above) and Karen (left) Roberts presented our program for this meeting. Their program, regarding light houses, created many questions and comments and one that was both enjoyable and informative to the member- Page 2
3 Manhattan Lions at Kansas Lions State Convention State Convention June 1,2 and 3 Lion members Joe Ott and Carol Ott, Mickey Keithley and Al Keithley, Matt Kerns and Bud Gillispie and Lela Gillispie attended the Kansas Lions State Convention in Wichita June 1,2, and 3. International Director Lewis Quinn and wife Gayle, from Alaska were the guests for the weekend. Members in attendance enjoyed and learned much from the Seminars presented by speakers and ID Quinn. The Lion State Band performed a wonderful concert Saturday morning. Speaker at the Saturday luncheon was Sierra Scott, a TV anchor and personality from the Wichita area. The Saturday evening banquet featured ID Quinn and several awards were presented to outstanding Lions from all of the districts. Among those being honored was Manhattan Lion Matt Kerns, who received the Centennial Leo Award for his years in the Leo Club. Matt is also taking on the responsibility of Co- Chair of the Kansas Leos. Congratulations to Matt. Page 3
4 MANHATTAN LIONS CLUB Manhattan Lions at Keats Lions Picnic On June 5th, the Manhattan Lions Club and the Keats Lions Club hosted a Centennial Pot Luck Picnic at the Keats City Park, celebrating 100 years of Lionism. Lions clubs throughout the world are celebrating the 100th anniversary this June, and have over 1.44 million members in over 200 countries. President (Big Lion) Richard Webster, of the Keats Lions Club, was the chef, grilling burgers and hot dogs for the club members and families, while the Manhattan Lions Club added BBQ meats. Members provided an excellent array of various salads, appetizers, and deserts to add to the entrees. The weather was excellent and the picnic facilities were perfect. Zone 12 clubs invited to the centennial celebration picnic included the Keats Lions Club, Leonardville club, Manhattan clubs, Onaga club, Randolph club and Wamego club. Page 4
