Welcome Choose a seat with a series book that you know well.... Try to find one you can imagine a kid you ve taught (or currently teach) that would read it.

Homerun Series What was your homerun series? Turn and Talk
Lucy McCormick Calkins notes that: "Reading the second or third book in a series is rather like rereading a familiar book, and this means that reading within a series can often give the reader extra support." Series books allow students to focus their attention on the ways that authors work. Because of the familiarity of the setting, characters, and plot in serial books, the reader is released from "figuring out" each book anew. Instead, as students read more and more titles in a series, they can consider how the author works-what does the author change? How does the author keep readers coming back? Calkins, The Art of Teaching Reading

Selling a Series! Read back of the book Read the CIP page The title of this book is (book title). Is is a (genre) written by (author). This series would be good for kids who liked (another book or series, lower preferrred) or kids who are into (tv show, collections). This book would also be good for kids who might someday want to read (higher level book) who were into (collection, tv show) when they were younger. Who would like to be the first to try this one out?
Blessing Series Books
Use the First Book in a Series Across the Day... Read Aloud Read Aloud with Accountable Talk Shared Reading Guided Reading Independent Reading
Read Aloud and Read Aloud with Accountable Talk Read it for pleasure Read it with open ended prompts (that you can transfer) Read it with transferable prompts Close Reading
Guided Reading (ish) Need mul(ples copies of the same book (or if the series can be read in any order; one book each) Introduce the characters Give the gist of the book Iden(fy the text structure Read the first chapter (alone but supported) Teacher coaches in to each learner Ends with a (p that will help the group of readers as they approach the rest of the series
Shared Reading Read the book to the class All students should be able to see the text Read the book or a small sec(on again and again with the class 3-5 days, 15 min max Each day have 1-2 specific teaching points -comprehension -word study -cross checking -fluency

Supporting Readers in Series Books during Independent Reading Read 1 book in series Spy on your self as a reader Consider what support does the reader need to make this text accessible? What do kids in this band of levels need? What does this series do that is possibly new to the reader?

Early Chapter Books: J-K/18-20 Short chapters/episodic (sometimes) Continued picture support Not a lot of characters Predictable characters Feelings change from beginning to end Lines often written in phrases Tricky Words ü multi-syllabic words ü irregular spelling patterns
Young Readers Chapter Books: L-M/24-28 Problem/Solution plot structure Gradually less picture support More dialogue (unassigned/broken) Static traits/feelings change Humor, sarcasm Longer lines of text/smaller font Longer sentences with introductory clauses Similes and metaphors Varied vocabulary More multi-syllabic words
Chapter Books: N, O/30-34 More episodes that occur over longer periods of time Mystery more common/suspense Multiple problems/pressures Problem/resolution, NOT problem/solution Characters are more complex: traits can change, not just feelings Traits are not explicit/stated Irony, similes, metaphors more common Secondary characters are more important Tricky sections, unfamiliar themes, events, settings More complex sentences (series of actions, adjectives, hyphenated words) Multi-syllabic words (proper and common nouns) Affixes should be taught with meanings
Conferring Shortcuts Henry and Mudge Series by Cynthia Rylant Level J Readers identify the major characters and the minor characters and defend how they know which are which. Readers identify important ideas from each chapter. Readers understand how to read quotation marks. Readers examine the text structure (i.e collection of short stories vs. one story that connects across chapters).
