1 Summer Book Club Lower School
2 Dear Lower School Students, As you ponder the endless possibilities of how to spend your long summer days, I encourage you to include reading. A good book can turn a lazy summer afternoon into an adventure. Reading opens up a world of imagination, asking you to picture the characters and scenes in your head. The Lower School teachers have created this packet to help you get started on your summer reading requirements. All Lower School students are required to read four books before the new school year begins. Here are the guidelines: Read at least four books. Two of the four books you read must be a book marked with an asterisk (*) from these lists. The other two books you read can be from these Accelerated Reader dot level lists or other books of your choosing at an appropriate reading level for you. In September, we will meet in Book Club groups to discuss one of the asterisked books you have read. Discuss your book choices with your parents and get started right away! Happy Reading, Mrs. McNally

11 A Magical Summer of Reading Welcome to the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge! Dear Parent, Did you know that when kids read over the summer they are more likely to leap ahead when they return to school? This is often called the summer leap, and our school has made it a priority to keep our students skills sharp by encouraging them to read all summer long. Our class has signed up to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a free online reading program that invites children to log their reading minutes all summer.. The goal is for the students in our school to discover the joy and magic of reading, and read the most minutes possible in an effort for our school to earn the title, Best in State. I m excited to share that the theme of this year s program is A Magical Summer of Reading! As students log their reading minutes throughout the 18 weeks of summer, they will earn digital rewards as they meet their weekly reading goals. Plus, throughout the summer, students can learn about great new books to read, access fun videos and printables, and more. You ll also find summer booklists for all ages (in English and Spanish) on the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website. The fun begins on May 7, 2018 and ends on September 7, To learn more about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge at scholas c.com/summer.
12 Happy Reading! Enjoy your summer!
