1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Literature is writing that is considered to be an art form, or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage. Its Latin root literatura/litteratura (derived itself from littera: letter or handwriting) was used to refer to all written accounts, though contemporary definitions extend the term to include texts that are spoken or sung (oral literature). Wellek and Warren (1989:14) explain that literature is frequently used to refer to imaginative works. It has been generally considered that literature comes up from the imaginative minds of people who had talent to create stories. Literature can be classified based on whether it is fiction or non-fiction and whether it is poetry or prose; it can be further distinguished according to major forms. One of the major forms of literature is novel. Klarer (1998:15) states that Literature is referred to as the entirety of written expression with the restriction that not every written document can be categorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word. The definitions, therefore, usually includes additional adjectives such as aesthetic or artistic. Literature is a creation of humankind that has aesthetics and artistic sides. In the past, the form of literature was usually conveyed orally, such as Epic stories. In the further progress, literature was made in written form and then it was visualized

as in drama. Later, Epic stories, written literature and drama are known as genre of literature. At this time the crowds use the book as a place to seek information, learning, knowing a literary work and more knowledge. And that is usually seen from the outside of the book. But there is another way of studying books which does not depend on knowing anything from outside books. This is called structural study, and it is the primary way in which the writer will look at literature in this paper. The author wants to discuss a literature works that is a novel written by Nan Mooney "I Can not Believe She Did That". A novel that tells about the reason women can betray other women in their work even though they are a friend in their daily life.

1.2 Problem of the Study Problems that the writer would like to study is : a. How is the plotstructure portrayed in the novel? 1.3 Objective of Study a. To portraye theplotstructure in Nan Mooney s novel I Can t Believe She Did That. 1.4 Scope of the Study The scope of the study is exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. 1.5 Significances of the Study a. Theoritically, the significance of this study is to enrich and develop literary study b. Practically, the study can be used as references for learning and understanding about plot in the novel 3.

1.6 Method of Research The source of data on this researchis the story of I Can t Believe She Did That written by Nan Mooney. The method applied in this research is the content study method. Karyanto (2004) the steps of content study are to determine the object research, collecting data, studying data and drawing conclusion

2. REVIEW OF RELATED THE LITERATURE 2.1 Plot Klarer (1998:15) suggests that plot is the logical interaction of the various thematic elements of a text which leads to a change of the original situation as presented at the outset of the narrative. Meanwhile, plot is also defined struggle between two persons, the two groups of people, or two ideas in a person s mind. Plot is a sequence of occurrence has phases to convey the story and according to Klarer (1998:15), an ideal tradition plot line encompasses the following four sequential levels: Exposition - compilation - climax or turning point- resolution Further, as explained by Klarer (1998:15), the exposition or presentation of the initial situation is disturbed by a compilation or conflict which produces suspense and eventually leads to a climax, crisis, or turning point. The climax is followed by a resolution of a compilation. Thus, plot in a short story is indispensable since it will determine whetherthe story is interesting or not though it s sequential level, conflict, and narrative style. However, plot can be also confusing if the sequential level is not clear whether the story is flash forward or flashback, has random ideas, or has too much vague flash back.

a. Exposition Exposition is the phase of events in fiction or drama in some situations that introduces the characters or the background story. Introduced from this figure are such as name, origin, physical characteristics, and nature. Exposition is the opening of the story that sets a scene, introduction the main character, situation, events existing before an action prepared for a story to begin. It also provides other background information that the reader needs in order to understand the events to follow. b. Conflict Conflict is the tension or conflict between two competing interests within the power of fiction or drama. This conflict can occur in one figure, between the two, between figures with the public or environment, between the character and nature figures, and between people and gods. Conflict is the essence of fiction. It creates plot. According to laura Bokesch (2009), there are four kinds of conflict that could be found in the story of the novel. They are: 1. Man versus Man Conflict that pits one person against another. In this case, one person faces the problem with the others which causes a conflict. In here, there are contradictions to get something from the quarreled thing.

2. Man versus Nature A run-in with the forces of nature. On the one hand, it expresses the insignificance of a single human life in the cosmic scheme of things. On the other hand, it tests the limits of a person s strength and will to live. 3. Man versus Society The values and customs by which everyone else lives are being challenged. The character may come to an untimely end as a result of his or her own convictions. The character may, on the other hand, bring others around to a sympathetic point of view, or it may be decided that society was right after all. 4. Man versus Self It is an internal conflict. Not all conflict involves other people, sometimes people are their own worst enemies. An internal conflict is a good test of a character s values. Does he give in to temptation or rise above it? Does he demand the most from himself or settle for something less? Does he even 12 bother to struggle? The internal conflicts of a character and how they are resolved are good clues to the character s inner strength. Often, more than one kind of conflicts are taking place at the same time. In every case, however, the existence of conflict enhances the reader s understanding of a character and creates the suspense and interest that will make the readers want to continue reading.

c. Climax Climax is the point of the greatest tension in a work of literature and the turning point in the action. In a plot line, the climax occurs after the rising action and before the falling action. A climax is the highest point in an ascending series of incidents in fiction. A climax will exist if there is a conflict. It is a point, at which the fortune of the protagonist undergoes a change influencing his heart or mind (Siswanto 2008: 159). Climax according to Stanton (1965: 16) is a conflict which has reached the high intensity, when the thing is something unavoidable. It means that based on the claim and logical story, the event at the time of it, indeed should accord climax completely determine the development of the story. Climax is the point between two or more opposite situation and considers how the problem will be resolved. In climax there are turning points that determine the end of the story. The climax is the result of the crisis. It is the highest point of the story for the reader. Frequently, it is the moment of the highest interest and greatest emotion. The point at which the outcome of the conflict can be predicted.

d. Resolution A resolution is the last event in a novel or the outcome of a conflict. The main character has finished solving this problem and this result in a happy or sad ending. Resolution refers to stage where the crisis or conflict is resolved either for better or for worse. Four types of plot structure: A Dramatic or Progressive Plot: This is a chronological structure which first establishes the setting and conflict, then follows the rising action through to a climax (the peak of the action and turning point), and concludes with a denouement (a wrapping up of loose ends). An Episodic Plot: This is also a chronological structure, but it consists of a series of loosely related incidents, usually of chapter length, tied together by a common theme and/or characters. Episodic plots work best when the writer wishes to explore the personalities of the characters, the nature of their existence, and the flavor of an era.

A Parallel Plot: The writer weaves two or more dramatic plots that are usually linked by a common character and a similar theme. A Flashback: This structure conveys information about events that occurred earlier. It permits authors to begin the story in the midst of the action but later fill in the background for full understanding of the present events. Flashbacks can occur more than once and in different parts of a story

And then there are four types regarding to plot : a. Suspense Frequently involves dilemma, for instance : caught in a bad situation with a choice in a boating accident, you can save either your mother or your husband from drowning. b. Flashback The author waits until the story is moving and flashes back to reveal biographical data or deep psychological reasons why a character acts as she/he does. It focuses more on why thing happen, rather than on what happens. c. Telescoping It s a matter of economy. The author can t describe every motion of the character or event during the time the story covers. She or he has to choose the significant and merely suggest the others by saying they happened, without much description. d. Foreshadowing The outcome of a conflict is often hinted at foreshadowed before the climax and denouement. These clues are ususally very subtle which remain foreshadowed until the story ends.

3. THE ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS 3.1 The Analysis of the Plot The plot used in I Can t Believe She Did That novel is flash-foward plot because the story tells present events and experiences. It can be seen from the elements of plot that the story moves forward Exposition The writer grew up in a family who had a firm stand on a woman's position and rights. It is evidenced by the traces of his family who is an expert and talented also have a strong thought that it was revealed to the author to be a woman who has a strong mind too and highly educated and finally he can achieve on his goal. I grew up surrounded by strong-minded women. my grandmother was a fur trapper, horse trainer, and icon o clast of the first order, adventure a key ingredient in everything she undertook. I attended a women 's college, emerging pumped high on the significance of women helping one another up the success ladder whenever possible. I used a female doctor and a female mechanic. Shortly after graduation, i headed to los angeles to make my woman's way in the entertaiment business. I found a job as an assistant to a succesful female executive.

From the study stage of the exposition above it can be conclude that the early part of the story I Can t Believe She Did That novel, the author explains that the main character comes from a family of high education and has a strong mindset so that she is also taught to be a good and educated woman not just an ordinary woman Rising Action Started from the writer who was only 8 years old who has little conflict with her playmate, Crispin. Crispin s is very aggressive when she was angry. Time has passed and we met again after thirty years later. They share the same traits as a close friend and now they have passed the age of thirty years which means they have entered into the environment of adult women who have relationships or conflicts with each other whether in working, making friends and others. When i was eight years old i tried to suffocate my best friend, Crispin, with an afghan. We tussled on the bed until we wore ourselves out. They were aggressive acts. During past thirty years, a formidable body of research has been amassed on the development of girls in our society. Though i will not rehash this material in its entirety, there are patterns that have come to light, messages girls receive about conflict and competition the lay the groundwork for our personal and professional relationships later on.

In this case, the rising action of the novel begins when the author explains that a relationship of close friend will be always no matter what happened, a trully friend will passed a moment and learning something together Conflict The problem is when women mostly choose a relationship of friendship based on social status, economy, occupation, similarities of fate and some other similarities. Because according to their equations can make them become close to each other In their research on female friendship, psychologists Susie Orbach and Luise Einchenbaum found that close bonds between women frequently depend upon the status of both sides remaining similar--- socially, economically, professionally. The conflict of this novel exists becausethat occur due to the woman herselfare very choosy in a relationship, in a relationship of romance or friendship or one with another. The author wants to show the reader that the results in her relationship with the surrounding and allows her to have a fight with their fellow (female).women do not want any gaps between them but they do instead make the gap indirectly and this causes problems between them. Even the research also shows that there is a very large limit among women of the other in friendship.

Climax When a woman can not divide her time for work and her family so that it will disturb the survival of her family and her future because she can not choose between family and work. Even in some cases they forget their family because they can not divide their time between family and career so that it becomes unbalanced for their life. The blame for how work-family conflicts damage our relationships often lies more with organizational and governmental policies than with our individual decision. Women are too picky in their relationships with each other but they can not be told to choose between their career and their family. Because they have a strong and high self-esteem so they can not if they have to choose between the two. Even in some cases women will prefer their careers rather than their families because for their careers they will lead to a better life than having to take care of a child and cleaning at home. Women can not choose one between the two options so it will be a problem and consequently the family and her career will not run smoothly will even damage one or both.

Falling Action In the end the action to be done is to mutually correct each other and succumb to each other. Because if a woman realizes her own potential then she will not drop each other and betray her own friend. If we are to maximize our collective potential, women working together need to focus on enhancing our self-confidence and initiative, not squashing it, learning how to distinguish between eradicting our differences and incorporating them. We must determine how to combine our various strenghts, talents, desires, and flaws without negating what we want or who we are. The authors point out here that women should better maximize themselves and their potential to be able to compete in a healthy way without having to do things like sneer, betray and drop their opponents even their own friends. If they had done so even though they were in the same group there would be no silent betrayal between them.

Resolution All the problems that women experience are very complicated. Between women with each other can fight each other, pout and even drop one another because basically back to the nature of women who can not succumb though to each other and his close friends. The problems that erupt between women on the job are complicated. They rattle our deepest insecurities about what it means to be a successful woman in the twenty-first century. Umtil we confront those fears, we cannot create the rich, healthy, and productive relationships we want and deserve to experience with one another on the job. i hope that it comples us to redefine the roles conflict and competition plat in our interactions, to recognize opportunities for growth, and to act upon those opportunities together. In solving this problem all women have to do to avoid each other is to understand each other and stop making the competition between them so as not to hurt each other. Women can also support each other and help each other so that they do not cause more complicated problems. And basically it will not be a problem if they do not become voters, have high egos, understand each other and not drop each other.

4. Conclusion After studying Nan Mooney s Novel I Cant Believe She Did That, the writer concludes : a. ) The author of this novel wants to show the readers her experience about women in her place around. In this novel hase many women as example of her abilities. And the author showed different sides of the story as her experience too. b. ) women has complicated problem to each other like : - How do we cope with ambition, wealth, and success in other women and in ourselves? - How do we forget relationships with our female colleagus based on honesty without cruelty, emphaty without dependence, generosity without self-sacrifice? - What shapes our self-confidence and sense of entitlement? - How realistic are the expectations we have for our female bosses and employees? - how do we openly address our fear of other women s disapproval? - How might we redefine such terms as competition, conflict, power, and influence to suit women s roles in the workplace today? c. ) women has high self-esteem in herself and that s a reason why she doesn t want to lose from a man. d. ) women has a high solidarity to each other but they have a high competition in theirself and make a competition with other women even her closefriend.
