Basic Consideration Literature is essentially a creation, a creation not merely-eyes an imitation (Luxemburg, 1989, p.5). Literary work as a result, a job and creative virtually is a medium that make use of language to express of human life. Therefore a literary work, in general is containing about the problems surrounding human life. In the literature itself, there are some genres of literary work such as, poetry, drama, and prose. Prose are still limited into three, namely short story, novelette and novel. According to Kelly (as cited in Tobuto, 2013 p.1) a literary

work creates an imaginary world and this world embodies a theory about how the real world works. From the statement above, it can be conclude that literary very important because the literary work creates an imaginary world. In this research, the researcher chooses novel as the object of this research. The novel to be analyzed here is A Walk to Remember, a novel written by Nicholas Sparks. The researcher chooses A Walk to Remember novel as the object of the research because this novel have a value message and also not a boring story. A Walk to Remember novel focuses on teen s story that obedient to her God. This is a good novel because A Walk to Remember novel the best-seller list on hardcover, and an additional four months on paperback. Although the novel is number 12 on their list of 1999 Bestsellers Fiction, Publishers Weekly described it as "a forced coming of age story" and "the author's most simple, formulaic, and blatantly melodramatic package to date". The researcher chooses the conflict in A Walk to Remember novel because the conflict in the novel is very interesting to analyze. Where Landon hate to Jamie and then he falls in love to Jamie, and then Landon knows that people loved so much it has a deadly disease. The conflict in A Walk to Remember novel brings us in learning to life. This analysis focuses only conflict of main character or Landon conflict in A Walk to Remember novel. There are some conflict to be derived from the character that reflects of romance story. Therefore, the conflict obtained will be life description for the audiences to see the life. In real life, the human always interacts with another human, and often find contradiction between them which accumulate a continuous conflict such as differences in desires, the way of thinking, hopes, difference in manners of life. The researcher took the title of the research is Conflict in Nicholas Sparks s A Walk to Remember (A Novel written by Nicholas Spark s). Research Question Based on the consideration above the researcher formulate the research question into How are Landon conflicts in Nicholas Spark s as reflected in A Walk to Remember novel?

The Objective of Research The researcher aims the analyze Landon conflicts are reflected in A Walk to Remember novel. On the analyze conflict, the researcher studying literary work it is important to well-gained information or knowledge about conflict from Landon in the novel A Walk to Remember. The Scope and Delimitation of Study The scope and delimitation of this research is only to analyze the main character conflicts in A Walk to Remember novel through the character behaves from what Landon says. There are three types of conflicts that exist in A Walk to Remember novel they are man versus himself, man versus man and man versus society. The Significance of Research The significance of this research consist three significance, the first for student, the research can give information to the student how to analyze and understand conflicts in the novel. Second for the researcher, it would become an experience in doing a research of literature. Third, for the teacher of English Department, this study in order to be a good research material and can be used as an example for further research, especially research of literature on conflict. The Concept of Novel The novel is a work of fiction. The term in this sense means fiction or fantasy. Abrams (as cited in Nurgiyantoro: p. 1) narrative work of fiction is that it is not the truth of history. Works of fiction as such a narrative work something is fiction, delusion that there is no real and happening, so fiction does not need to look for the truth in the real world. However, the fiction is a story and contains therein also the purpose of providing entertainment to the readers as well as an aesthetic purpose. There is also a fictional notion expressed by Wellek & Warren (1956: p. 212), a work of fiction should remain an interesting story, but it is building a coherent structure and aesthetic purposes has remained. Not all of literary works currents exist in the real world, but it must be also accepted by reason. In a novel, the writer is trying everything possible to

direct the reader to the reality of life figures through the stories contained in the novel. Most people read a novel just want to enjoy the story presented by author. The reader will only get the impression in general and of certain story interesting. From the some explanation we can be concluded that novel is a story fictitious describing or delineating life the characters by using grooves. Fictitious tales not only as a story delusion merely, but a imagination produced by author is reality or phenomenon seen and perceived. By reading the novel, the reader will imagine himself, we can imagine what is in and what is described in the novel. The story in the novel displayed by the characters, and we can see a wide range of characters from a novel, and there will be conflict. Characters and Conflict According to Roberts and Jacobs (1989: 22), flat characters are essentially undistinguishable from their group or class. Therefore they are not individual, but representative. Usually they stay the same; they are static, and not dynamic like round character. They are not developed, and because they are not central to the plot they do not change or grow (Roberts and Jacobs, 1989:23). Based on the statement, characters can also be classified by the amount of change they exhibit in their personalities. If a character undergoes a significant change in personality, then that character is considered a dynamic character. If a character shows little or no change in personality, then that character is considered a static character. Reading a novel, usually we will be faced with a number of the characters featured there in. However in relation to the whole story, the role of each of these characters is not the same. There is a character that is important is often called the main character and there is a character that appears only once or only a few times in the story are called supplementary characters. Stanton explain (as cited in Nurgiyantoro, 2012, p. 124) describes a form of conflict, as a form of Genesis, also can be distinguished in two categories: internal conflict and external conflict.

Internal conflict is conflict that become between man versus himself. For example, it happened due to a contradiction between two desires, beliefs, different choices, hope, or other related problems in itself (Nurgiyantoro, 1995, p.124). Meanwhile, according to Jones (as cited in Nurgiyantoro, 2012, p.124) external conflict is conflicts that become between man versus man, man versus society and man versus nature. From the explanation above the researcher can conclude that man versus himself conflict is the conflict happened between character and himself, man versus man conflict is the conflict that happened between character and his opponent, man versus society is the conflict character with his social environment and man versus nature namely character with their surroundings. Conflict is also makes the story become more fascinating. A story without conflict will be monotonous. Therefore, conflict is an important part of a story. There are two types of conflict, internal conflict and external conflict, internal conflict between Character with himself (Man versus Himself, while on the external conflict of Character with Character (Man Versus Man), Character with his friends (Man versus Society) and Character with the Nature ( Man versus Nature). - Man versus Himself This conflict does not involve anyone else, this conflict was marked by turmoil that arises within oneself about such things as values. Strength of character will be seen in his attempt to face turmoil and also usually has something to do with a choice like choosing between right and wrong or it may have to do with overcoming emotions or mixed feelings. - Man versus Man Man versus Man is the most fundamental type of external conflict. This form of external conflict occurs when a character struggles against another character. These struggles may be born from moral, religious or social differences and may be emotional, verbal or physical conflict. - Man versus Society

This external conflict exist when characters struggles against the morays of their culture and government. Dystopian works, where character s battle evil, oppressive cultures are characteristic of man versus society conflict. - Man versus Nature A character finds himself pitted against the forces of nature. The narrative may become a disaster or survival story; it may also feature the character striving to conquer and defeat nature. Based explanation above, the researcher concluded that internal conflict is Man versus Himself, Where the main character conflict with himself. Character conflict with himself caused by characters usually has something to do with a choice (choosing between right and wrong) or it may have to do with overcoming emotions or mixed feelings. While the external conflicts between characters with a character, character with social and a character with nature. A conflict that occurs between the characters and the characters here, where a character against his opponent, usually the conflict that took place between characters with character here between the protagonist and antagonist. The conflict between characters with social, in this conflict occurs between the characters with those who are around them, either friends or even his family. And the last follows character with nature, in this conflict occurs between human against nature, such as floods and so forth. How to Analyze the Conflict in Novel? Almost every one of us has ever experienced and engaged in a conflict or may just be on a position as a person who just saw it. A conflict in the novel is a conflict that always happens in our lives. To analyze the conflict in the novel, we should read carefully the contents of the novels, and then we determine what the conflicts that appear in the novel are. By way of analyzing the conflict, there are some conflict that always exists in internal conflicts and external conflict. The first analysis is the internal conflict. In the internal conflict between the conflict of man versus himself, the character s struggle takes place in his/her own mind. Usually has something to do with a choice (choosing between right and wrong), or it may have to do with overcoming emotions or mixed feelings.

By looking explanation of conflict Man versus Himself here, can concluded that conflict character with her inner, have pressure because he confused choose which is right and which is wrong. Or he will do with mixed feelings. If above has explained internal conflicts, then external conflict also will be explained by looking conflict Man versus Man, Man versus Society and Man versus Nature. In the Man versus Man is here explained a character struggles with another character or protagonist versus antagonist and the classic good guy versus bad guy. The characters are in conflict here he would fight against his enemies, or one might say protagonist against the antagonist. We know the antagonist is a character malevolent, but always in a story or novel, the antagonist characters always suffered defeat. Man versus society conflict, in this conflict a character or a group of characters struggle against the society in which they live. The character struggle against society traditions or rules (fight for freedom, rights, for a cause etc.) and society becomes a character of its own. Usually used to comment on positive or negative aspects of real society. Man versus society here explained that the characters are in conflict with the neighboring social or where he lives, a struggle between the characters with society here due to a dispute or opinions are not the same, and also he's straggle for freedom, the rights for the purpose of a better life. The last conflict of Man versus Nature, a conflict fought between the character and the natural is here explained that a character struggles with a force of nature (natural disaster, desolation, animal etc.). Usually, the character is struggling to survive. Man versus Nature this explains about character that fought against nature, he fought so he could against nature we around him for good purposes for themselves and others. Against nature referred to here is against natural disaster such as earthquake, flood even animals though. Of the four explanations for the conflict analysis, we can conclude that the conflict was something that was not intentionally or accidentally occurring because of a fight or a challenge from other parties. In other words, the conflict has not only to be analyzed but also life lessons should be made in the future.

Relevance of Study The following books are the previous study of conflict namely: - Fitriati S. Ali An Analysis of Conflict in The Clinic. In her research, she focused on one categorize of conflict, there is Man versus Man or conflict among character. Therefore, the different with my research is my research focused to Man versus Himself, Man Versus Man and Man versus society. - Mohamad Djafar Conflict Analysis in William shakespeare s Play Othello. In this research, he focused on external conflict. In his research, there are some theories that same with me, there is about categories of external conflict. He analyze one of categorize of external conflict only. Therefore, the different with my research is contain analysis or discuss about external conflict. - Nur Afni Maku, Woman Ideas in Danielle Steel s Wings (A Conflict Analysis). Nur as the writer was analysis the ideas of the woman in the novel. The focus of analysis is the characterization of woman character. By using qualitative analysis the writer found the ideas of woman in the novel is the freedom of women same as the man. The woman must be given the same chance with the man. Therefore, the different with my research is she focuses to analysis characterization and the researcher focus to Landon conflict in A Walk to Remember novel. Method of Research In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method to analyze the conflict of main character in A Walk to Remember Novel. Descriptive method is used to illustrate the character and the main character change the terms of thoughts, feelings, actions, and outlook on life characters in the novel. In this research, the researcher describes the conflict that is investigated through the analysis of statement from the characters in the story A Walk to Remember novel. Source of the Data Source of the data, the researcher uses two sources, there are the primary and secondary data. Primary data is the main data. Primary data in this research is A Walk to Remember novel. Secondary data is the second data. Secondary data

in this research will take the other source from other media such as books, internet and articles which has related with the data. Technique of Analyzing the Data After the researcher read the novel, the researcher apply three steps: The first, the researcher identify the conflict of main character in the novel, what the main character say in the novel. Second, the researcher categorize Landon statement that described from the conflict. Third, the researcher interpret the main character by the ways show the main character behavior through statement and the researcher draw a conclusion of conflict that presented from the main character. Approach In this research, the researcher uses structural approach to analyze the data. Structural approach used because this research will analyze components in novel like the character and conflict in A Walk to Remember novel. The explanation of Abrams (1981: p.68) structural approach is structure of literary work can be interpreted as a composition, assertion and description of all materials and parts that into components which together form a beautiful roundness. Main Character The characters are characters in a story, the author wishes he had acted according to the story (Keraf, 2007, p.164). That is what make character is very important in a fiction, novels, romances, short story, or drama. It is because character can build the plot of a story. (Meyer, 1990, p.61). In describing the discussion, researcher explains the main character in A Walk to Remember novel. The main character in A Walk to Remember is Landon who has the conflict in the novel. Landon have a many conflict in A Walk to Remember novel, just consist two conflicts showed in A Walk to Remember novel they are internal conflicts and external conflict. Character Landon Carter In the novel, Landon is the main character, Landon also had a good trait, but he is also naughty. It was marked from his attitude who does not like Jamie

because Jamie is the most peculiar girl he had ever known before. Jamie is always carried the book everywhere and always wearing the same sweater every day. Landon is the main character who has internal and external conflicts, where internal conflicts is he and himself, while the external conflicts he had with Jamie and other friends. Internal conflicts that exist between Landon and himself, where Landon loves Jamie but he still can t believe that he would love a girl like Jamie. As for the internal conflict in the novel a walk to remember that is where Landon is afraid to do anything that would hurt Jamie. The internal conflict in A Walk to Remember novel, was more dominated the feeling of the character who made mistakes to another character happened to Landon. The data of this research show that Landon feels sad that he was made a mistake to Jamie. Conflict of A Walk to Remember A Walk to Remember novel, is talking about romance story between Landon and Jamie. In this story, Landon is a main character. Landon has conflict between him and himself, him and Jamie and him and his friend. The conflict can be seen in the statement from character in A Walk to Remember novel. In this novel, the only one main character who is antagonist character is Landon, because in the first time, Landon does not like Jamie, after he started familiar with Jamie and after staging plays he started aware the kindness of Jamie so he starts fell in love with Jamie. While, the protagonist character is Jamie. Jamie always kind to anybody and she was feared of her parents. In stories A Walk to Remember novel is displayed internal conflict and external conflict viewed from statement spoken by the character. The result of this research show that the conflict that happen in this novel more dominated by social conflict. The data of this research show that many conflicts, there are man versus himself, man versus man, man versus society. Conclusion

The conflict is a process with respect to the individual s personality and also its environment. Where conflict is a symptomatic individual experience where not happy and did not agree to such a thing then led to uncomfortable to himself. The conflict can be resolved depends on how we create the conflict to keep it from developing into an adverse thing. In A walk to Remember novel, internal conflict between Landon with himself, external conflict between Landon with Jamie, and Landon with his friends. Conflict Landon and himself is when Landon have a not choice to invite Jamie to the party dance, he quarreled with himself that it is unlikely he invites Jamie at dance because he does not want his friend mock him but at the other side he would not being material laughter his friend because he has no flings at the dance. Working from the dance that Jamie and Landon often meet until Landon finally did not think he fall heart on Jamie. Conflict Landon and Jamie when Landon says to Jamie that he loves to Jamie and Jamie resist it because Jamie has the disease of leukemia. Meanwhile, conflict Landon and his friend, in this conflict is conflict man versus society. This conflict happened while Landon came to the dance party with Jamie. His friends weren t feeling good when Landon went there with Jamie, because Jamie was a girl in a school which they got furious with that school. It can be conclude that the conflict can be solved by communication. The values that can be found in the novel that a good relationship in life is the most important thing that should be take care. A conflict that occurs in A Walk to Remember novel is limited only with the conflict of man versus himself, conflicts of man versus man, and conflict man versus society. The conflict of man versus nature does not exist in the novel A Walk to Remember because this novel is simply a novel romance. Suggestion Conflict, is not only a part if novel, it is interested to be investigated in order to get a positive message and novel is not only talking about violence and entertaining but it also containing a positive message. After doing an analyzing

of the manuscript Landon Conflict in A Walk to Remember novel, the researcher would like to carry on some suggestion to the reader as follows: Literary works are not something that boring, but it is something which is really interesting to analyze. The researcher suggested the reader to be more attracted to analyze literary work, because literary work is concerned with life and its problem which we often see in our daily life. A Walk to Remember novel can be the story in order to get something positive such as moral in romance novel. Based on the conclusion above, it can be found many moral from our life and can be learned from our life. So, it can be suggested to the next researcher to use novel as media of the researcher. By reading this analysis about conflict Landon in A Walk to Remember novel, we can learn how the conflict in novel and real life, and also the researcher more hope we can the appreciate more specially novel the literary work.
