Trevor Sands March 12, 2011 English 101 Josh Johnson Sands 1 Annabel Lee- Poe In the year 1849, the poet and author Egdar Allen Poe died. That very same year, the last complete poem he composed was published. Annabel Lee was the name of the poem and it was a story about two younger lovers living by the sea. In the poem, the angels become so filled with envy that they kill the beautiful Annabel Lee and left behind the lover to grieve for her loss. The narrator stays by his beloved s grave by the sea forever and continues to love her. This very poem was published and first seen by public eyes in Edgar Allan Poe s obituary section and was officially released later that same year. Edgar Allan Poe had a short life filled with sadness and misery. His wife had died of tuberculosis and he was a foster child since his mother died at the age of two. The poem of the two lovers carries a striking resemblance to Edgar Allan Poe s life and his love for his wife, Virginia Clemm, who had passed. The two people Virginia Clemm and Annabel Lee have more in common than most people care to realize or even knew at the time of his death. In the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe, the character Annabel Lee is a representation of Poe s late wife and she was his inspiration for the poem. Author Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 9 th, 1809, to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. Poe s mother died at the age of two which forced his father to abandon the family and to give him up to a foster family in Boston. Edgar started with a good strong education ending up in Richmond, Virginia. He

Sands 2 attended the University of Virginia but could not afford it, so after one year because of gambling problems and losing all the funds that his foster father had given him to attend college so he was forced to join the army. After some time his foster father forced him to join the West Point Military Academy at which he purposely failed out of as a Cadet. He was always reading and writing and got jobs at newspapers for writing criticisms. Having this career he was forced to move between cities and write for many newspapers. These newspaper jobs are what gained him his recognition as a writer and what was the transit system for much of his early material to be spread around. While working with a newspaper in Baltimore, Edgar Allan Poe married his thirteen- year- old cousin, Virginia Clemm. Over the next ten years, Poe continued to publish works and write for newspapers, although he was fired from some of them for being drunk. Poe had many areas that he wrote about and many subjects that he liked to focus on. The idea of a beautiful woman in love was one of the characters or themes he liked to use most. The woman in most of his poems or stories almost always dies leaving behind a grieving man. This theme, which Poe seems to follow, draws its inspirations from his life at home and is not some fantasy idea that he re- imagines over and over again. When he was two years old, his mother died of tuberculosis leaving him behind to go into a foster family. This impact on Poe s life seems to affect how he goes about writing these stories of women, however, his wife also passed away. Edgar Allan Poe s wife died when she was only in her early twenties. The poem Annabel Lee came out years later right before Poe s life ended. The circumstances and causes behinds Edgar Allan Poe s death are still a mystery today and no one really knows what happened. Poe died a household name thanks to his works, especially The Raven.

Sands 3 Edgar Allan Poe s writing style was not just to be relevant to the public but to also have a abstract view of it. He never said anything straightforward but took a sideways approach to everything making it seem fictional while still applying to reality. In an analysis of his work, a writer said, Poe's habit is to blend the natural and uncanny by postulating hidden but rational laws governing the action (Buranelli). When reading any of the poem s, especially his later ones, a clear moral can be drawn from them about life but again it is approached from a sideways angle, which at times can make it even more defined then if he just told you what it was actually about. Audience Considering Edgar Allan Poe spent a considerable amount of his life as a newspaper critic and writer, most of his works were directed at the public as a whole and leaving out the young population. His stories and poems were meant to invoke thought and feelings which they had accomplished. Poe traveled very much and worked for many papers so many people throughout the country had read at least one of his stories or articles. Many times when writing he drew inspiration from his personal life such as his mother and wife dying. The audiences for poems and short stories like that are far ranging. Poems where he talks about the death of a beautiful woman could have an audience including himself. Poe s stories acted as a reminder of how he felt about things and they were really the only outlet that he had while working for the newspapers considering he moved so much and did not have much of an opportunity to get to know people and become comfortable in his surroundings. He was writing about his loss and the writings and poems reminded him of how he feels about certain things and frame his life around him. In the poem Annabel Lee he talks about staying by his wifes seplcure after she dies and just sitting there waiting. His love for his beloved Annabel Lee never wavers and he describes how nothing, not even the Angels can touch what they had together. The words that he wrote were ways of

Sands 4 telling others that he was sitting there by his wife s tomb because he is with her in more ways than one by continually writing about her and remembering her through words. Another audience for these is the general public. With everything Poe writes, he gives an insight into his own life and his own struggles. People feel what he is going through and what he is experiencing just by reading something he wrote months or years before. His work with newspapers got his word out and people really listened. When the poem The Raven came out he became an instant success overnight. People everywhere from that point on knew his work and knew what kind of an author he was and appreciated him for that. Since Annabel Lee was his last completed work, it was not published until two days after his death as part of his obituary. People realized in that passage of the newspaper that they had lost someone important if they did not know him before just by reading his last poem. They could feel the words he wrote and understand them even though they knew that these words were printed next to the ones that proclaimed he had died and the words they were reading were a dead man s words. Analysis This poem is entirely about the love between the narrator and the character Annabel Lee. The poem sets it up so the reader can just imagine these two people living on the beach. Like most Edgar Allan Poe poems, the beautiful woman dies. The man left alone stays by her grave by the sea. This is what most people would believe when they just read it though and do not think about it but it is so much more under the surface. In this poem, the last of which he completed, you can truly see his raw emotion coming through the words. His wife, who had passed years earlier, bears many of the characteristics of the Annabel Lee in the poem. In the poem he talks about them being in love as children. In Poe s life, he married his wife when she was only thirteen which means that she was still a

Sands 5 child when they fell in love and became wed. Also, in the poem, the beautiful woman in the relationship dies young leaving behind the grieving narrator, which is exactly what happened between Edgar Allan Poe and Virginia Clemm. Another similarity is that Annabel Lee in the poem dies from an Angel s breath and Virginia Clemm in Poe s life died from tuberculosis which is a disease causing the lungs to cough up blood. The idea of the breath being the death of both women is yet another similarity which makes the two women virtually identical. He also took a more direct approach to showing that it was himself wrapped up the poem and his emotions were the ones on the page. The key is that he did not give the narrator a name and just uses I. He is literally referring to himself every time he says the word I, the only difference that he uses is that he uses the name Annabel Lee in place of his wife Virginia Clemm. Another piece of the puzzle that Poe puts together for the reader is the idea of Angels and Demons. By putting these elements in, it gives a view into what he believed and what he thought about death. He describes how the angels took away his Annabel Lee whom he loved but he then goes on to say that their love was so strong that neither Angel nor Demon could destroy that love. He was talking about the love between him and his wife who was taken away from him. It shows that he has a belief in the afterlife in some form or another because that is the only way that their love could continue. It also shows that he believed in such things as angels or demons and believes that they are what took away his wife in real life from him. A final point connecting Poe to the story and making it more of a biography than a fictional poem is the recurring setting of the Sea. When he was only two, his mother died of tuberculosis and his father abandoned the family leaving him to be a foster child. All he grew up knowing was not his family, but just strangers who over time became friends. He never had an anchor to hold on to as a

Sands 6 child so he felt like is life was constantly changing, like the sea. When his Uncle had passed, he gave Poe in his will a pieces of land. The estimated value of this land was over 750,000 dollars. In his sea of life he had found a kingdom worth lots of money. Over time, he lost the properties and wealth but maintained that essence of what a Kingdom by the Sea really was because he had experienced it first hand. Taking the words from the poem about the kingdom by the sea, it just shows Poe s feelings about where he wanted to live his life with his beautiful wife. Conclusion Every step of the poem was covered in a piece of Poe s life and related in some way, his view of his life and what he really wanted can be seen. In the poem, he talks about wanting to love and be loved in a kingdom by the sea which in his own life translated to him wanting to live in his wealthy estates acquired by the death of his uncle and just love and be loved by his wife, Virginia Clemm. The way that he talks about angels killing his Annabel Lee and how not even the Angels or Demons could ever dissever their love show that he believed in Angles and Demons and that Virginia in a way is still being kept in the Seplcure by the Sea. When Edgar Allan Poe died he was still waiting alongside his own sea in his own little world. Poe wrote this representing more of a biography and was his one last attempt to display his feelings in writing about his life and his love. When Edgar Allan Poe died, his obituary was posted in the newspaper and it talked about his last works that he published and his life. One of his literary critics wrote an article about him for the obituary. His name was Ludwig and he wrote, "Nearly all that he wrote in the last two or three years- including much of his best poetry- - was in some sense biographical; in draperies of his imagination, those who had taken the trouble to trace his steps, could perceive, but slightly covered, the figure of

himself" (Griswold). Even the people who lived back when he did and knew little about his personal life could tell Sands 7 that he was talking about himself through the last years of his life writing about what he wanted his life to be and what he thought it should have been. The poem Annabel Lee when originally written by Edgar Allen Poe was believed to be addressed to his wife and many believe the reason he did not use the name Virginia Clemm was because, Annabel Lee is a more fitting name for his idealized woman, Virginia Clemm not being an easy name to rhyme with. And so, the last poem Edgar Allan Poe was about the love between him and his wife.
