Objective of Research The objective of this project is to establish a firm collaboration between the Korean and the Japanese gravitational wave groups, through the collaboration research on the Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational wave Telescope (KAGRA) for the first detection of gravitational waves and thus for the establishment of gravitational wave Image of KAGRA. astronomy. The Japanese group has been engaged in the gravitational wave detection using prototype detectors since the 1980s. We have developed several prototypes including TAMA300 and CLIO. In 2011 KAGRA was funded and we have been working on finalizing the design of KAGRA, while the construction of the infrastructure at the site is underway. By the time of the start of this collaboration research we had obtained almost all the key technologies required to build the KAGRA observatory. However, experience with previous detectors has shown that these complex instruments pose a considerable challenge during the installation and commissioning phase. Therefore, the availability of more human resources and the further evaluation of the design are important to reach the envisaged high sensitivity in a short time. On the other hand, the Korean group has been working mainly on data analysis. They have been analyzing data of the American detector, LIGO. On the instrument side, they had many top-level researchers in related field such as optics and mechanics, who had shown interest in the detection of gravitational waves. For example Prof. Yoon, the principal researcher of this collaboration research, was a director of Creative Research Initiative and had become interested in the detection of gravitational waves. Therefore it was timely and significant for the two groups to start working jointly on KAGRA. The Japanese group can obtain the necessary expertise and human resources from the Korean group that could reinforce KAGRA, while the Korean group can join a real gravitational wave detection project. The joint research between the two groups will enable us to establish the firm and everlasting collaborative relationship between the two groups, which is crucial for the success of KAGRA as well as for the establishment of an Asian center for gravitational wave observation. Furthermore, the international scope of the KAGRA promises to attract the best of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers in support of training a new generation of gravitational-wave physicists and astronomers. 4

Methodology First, the PI of this program, and several other Korean members became the formal KAGRA members at the KAGRA F2F meeting in August, 2011, then some other members also became KAGRA members later. After we initiated some collaboration researches, we had the second joint workshop on May 28 and 29 at, the University of Tokyo in Japan to discuss 3rd workshop. the progress of the collaboration researches and how we should proceed from there. This time we decided to submit individual proposals on some collaboration items both in Japan and Korea. Then we held the third joint workshop on Dec. 21 and 22, 2012 at in Korea to further discuss the progress of the collaboration researches and how we should proceed. This time we agreed not only to continue the efforts of submitting research proposals but also submit a program that can make it possible to exchange graduate students for a longer period. 5
