4 6. Objective of Research Ship designs have been generally based on modification to existing designs, i.e., parent ships. This approach of ship design works well, as long as the newly designed ship stays within the design paradigm of its parent ships. However, as more off-the-table designs and non-conventional hull forms are needed for today s diverse world of sea transportation, it is of utmost importance to develop a simulation tool that can be utilized at early stages of ship design. Self-propulsion is the most important factor in hull form and propulsion system design. Based on the self-propulsion results, designers can improve and/or confirm the speed of the ship. Model testing can only provide limited information on self-propulsion. Objectives 1. Develop a new computational fluid dynamic (CFD) tool that simulates a cavitating marine propeller. 2. Develop a new grid generation and CFD solution procedure that simulates self-propulsion tests. 3. Establish a standard database of self-propulsion tests for a modern commercial hull form. 4. Conduct cavitation tunnel tests for analysis of characteristics of cavitating modern marine propellers. 5. Validate the results from the developed CFD tools and solution procedures against experimental data obtained. Cross-check each other side s results, visit each other side s research lab, and exchange information periodically. 4

5 7. Methodology Largely, the Japanese side takes charge of the CFD research, while the Korean side takes charge of the model testing and validation. However, for the purpose of cross-check, the Japanese side also plans to conduct cavitation tunnel tests and the Korean side also uses a commercial CFD code to run similar test problems. In the first year, the Japanese side will work on the above mentioned objective 1, i.e., development of CFD tool for a cavitating marine propeller. The Korean side will carry out cavitation tunnel tests for analysis of characteristics of cavitating modern marine propellers. Both sides communicate periodically to update each other on their progress and provide their results. Validate the results from the developed CFD tool against experimental data obtained. At the end of the first year, i.e., June or July 2009, the Korean team will visit the Japanese counterpart to have a two-day meeting aimed to exchange information, findings, and experience, obtained from each side s study. Based on the same approach used in the first year, the Japanese side will work on the development of grid generation and CFD solution procedure for self-propulsion tests, while the Korean side will carry out an extensive range of self-propulsion tests for a modern commercial hull form, i.e., KCS. Both sides communicate periodically to update each other on their progress and provide their results. Validate the results from the developed CFD tool against experimental data obtained. At the end of the second year, i.e., June or July 2010, the Japanese team will visit the Korean counterpart to have a two-day workshop. On the first day of this workshop, both sides present their results and discuss the findings and possible improvements. On the second day of the workshop, external people will be invited and presented the final results of the cooperative research. Questions, comments. 5
