Anton Zensus Max-Planck-Insttut für Radoastronome Auf dem Hügel 69, DE Bonn (Germany) The Atacama Large mm-submm Array (ALMA) s, by far, the most senstve mm/submm telescope n the World. The ALMA Phasng Project (APP) wll allow us to phase-up all the ALMA antennas and use them as one sngle VLBI staton. Ths wll be a key component of the Event Horzon Telescope (EHT), a Global VLBI array at mllmeter wavelengths. A problem n the APP s the calbraton and converson of the polarzaton channels. Most VLBI statons record ther sgnals n a crcular bass, but the ALMA recevers record n a lnear bass. The strategy that wll be followed n the phased-alma VLBI observatons wll be to correlate n a mxed bass (.e., lnear versus crcular) and convert the vsbltes to a pure crcular bass after the correlaton. We have developed an algorthm to perform such a polarzaton converson of the VLBI vsbltes. In these proceedngs, we present the bascs of ths algorthm and dscuss on the polarzaton converson n the general case where sngle dshes (besdes phased arrays) record wth lnear recevers n VLBI observatons. We show some results of our algorthm appled to realstc smulatons, as well as a test wth real VLBI observatons at 86 GHz between the Onsala radotelescope (recordng n lnear bass) and the Effelsberg radotelescope (recordng n crcular bass). 12th European VLBI Network Symposum and Users Meetng, 7-10 October 2014 Caglar, Italy Speaker. 2 1. Introducton Most heterodyne recevers regster the sgnals n a lnear polarzaton bass. The recever s frontend can be understood as two orthogonal dpoles, one horzontal (the X axs) and one vertcal (the Y axs), n the frame of the antenna mount. However, Very-Long-Baselne-Interferometry (VLBI) observatons nvolve baselnes so long, that the parallactc angles, ψ, of two antennas pontng to the same source can be qute dfferent (assumng that the mounts of the antennas are alt-azmuthal). Ths orentaton ssue n VLBI can orgnate many problems f the sgnals are recorded n a lnear polarzaton bass, snce the ψ correcton wll mx, n that case, the X and Y sgnals n dfferent ways for the dfferent antennas. Hence, both channels X and Y have to be detected and recorded wth smlar system temperatures, T sys, and the ampltude calbraton must be well known before aapplyng any ψ (and/or phase) correcton. However, f the sgnals are recorded n a crcular polarzaton bass (.e. dvdng the lght nto rght-hand, RCP, and left-hand, LCP, crcular polarzatons), all these problems are solved. Crcular recevers can be bult by just addng a quarter waveplate (or an equvalent devce) at the frontend of the recever, so that the ncomng crcular polarzaton s converted nto lnear, and then detected by the dpoles. In ths R/L bass, the ψ correcton becomes a mere phase addton to RCP and LCP, so there s no need of havng nether smlar T sys nor known ampltude correcton factors n the ntal data calbraton. In addton to ths, f any of the channels, RCP or LCP, fals to be recorded (or f t s of bad qualty), t s stll possble to use the other channel for the scence analyss. Ths s not possble f the recordng s performed n the X/Y bass, snce both channels are always needed for the ψ correcton (especally f ψ s not the same for all antennas). Crcular-polarzaton recevers have, though, some dsadvantages. The purty of the polarzaton s usually lower (there s more polarzaton leakage between the channels) and the effectve bandwdth s narrower. Quarter waveplates are desgned to be optmum at a gven frequency, but ther performance degrades as the sgnal frequency departs from that used n the waveplate desgn. These dsadvantages make lnear-polarzaton recevers the optmum choce for nterferometers wth wde-band recevers and hgh polarzaton purty, lke ALMA. Hence, ALMA uses recevers that record the sgnal n a lnear, X/Y, bass, whereas VLBI statons mostly record the sgnals n a crcular, R/L, bass. As a consequence, when the phased ALMA wll be used as a VLBI staton, the vsbltes that wll be correlated aganst the other VLBI statons wll be computed n a mxed polarzaton bass (.e., lnear for ALMA, crcular for the other statons). These vsbltes have to be converted nto a pure crcular bass, before any analyss or calbraton can be performed. In these proceedngs, we brefly descrbe our approach to calbrate and convert the ALMA-VLBI mxed-polarzaton vsbltes nto a pure crcular bass. 2. Vsblty matrx n a mxed-polarzaton bass nvolvng a phased array Let v a k be the voltage regstered by an antenna a at tme t k n any gven polarzaton bass. Antenna a may be, n our case, a stand-alone VLBI staton wth a crcular-polarzaton feed. Let v k be the voltage at tme t k regstered by the -th antenna of a phased array (whch wll be named b) n another polarzaton bass. Snce the phased sgnal of b at tme t k s the addton of the voltages v k 2
3 of all the phased antennas, the correspondng element of the Vsblty matrx (see Smrnov 2011a) between the statons a and b wll be v a v b = v a v = v a v. (2.1) That s, gven that the correlaton operator s lnear, the vsblty s equal to the sum of the correlatons between antenna a and each ndvdual antenna of the phased array. Takng nto account all the polarzaton products, we can buld the full Vsblty matrx n the same way,.e. V(a,b)= V(a,). (2.2) In the absence of nose, and f the sgnals are perfectly calbrated, all the matrces V(a,) should be numercally equal (as long as the syntheszed VLBI feld-of-vew s much smaller than the syntheszed resoluton of the phased array). 3. The effect of dfferent antenna gans n the phased elements The dfferent antennas of the phased array are affected by slghtly dfferent gans, bandpass responses, and polarzaton leakage (D-term factors). The observed Vsblty matrx, V obs (a,b), wll then be related to the perfectly-calbrated Vsblty matrx, V(a,b), by the equaton V obs (a,b)= V(a,b)K, (3.1) where the calbraton Jones matrx, K, can be a functon of frequency and tme, and s related to all the calbraton matrces (.e., gan, bandpass, D-terms, etc.) of all the phased-array antennas. Usng the algebra lnearty, we can also wrte V obs (a,b)= V(a,)K, (3.2) where antenna s corrupted by an unknown overall gan, K. Gven that the uncorrupted vsblty V(a,) s assumed to be nose-free, perfectly calbrated, and ndependent of, we can put V(a,) out of the sum and wrte (see Eq. 3.1) K = K, (3.3) where... s the averagng over the antennas of the phased array. Our objectve s to fnd out the K matrx of Eq. 3.1, usng all the observables avalable. Durng the VLBI observatons, the ALMA correlator wll be producng all the cross-correlatons among ALMA antennas. These products wll allow us to fnd the gans that calbrate each ndvdual ALMA antenna (just from a standard ALMA data reducton). Hence, t wll be possble to compute the K matrx exactly and fully calbrate the mxed-polarzaton Vsblty matrx (Eq. 3.1) before the converson of the data nto a pure crcular bass. Let B x and B y be the bandpass gans of the -th antenna n the phased array for polarzaton X and Y, respectvely. Let also α = exp( j φ ) be the relatve phase-gan between X and Y, for the 3
4 same antenna, and D x and D y be the D-terms. Applyng the correspondng Jones matrces (Smrnov 2011b), the exact K matrx for the full phased array becomes K = ( B x D x B x D y B y α B y α ), (3.4) where... represents the averagng over all the antennas. The calbraton matrx to be multpled by the observed vsblty matrx wll be the nverse of K (see Eq. 3.1). Tme-dependent ampltude and phase gans can also be trvally added to Eq. 3.4 (just lke the bandpass gans). Once the vsbltes are calbrated wth ths matrx, the converson from the mxed bass nto pure crcular bass s trval. It s only necessary to multply the vsblty matrx by the hybrd lnear-to-crcular polarzaton matrx, whch we call C: C = 4. Specal case: sngle dsh wth a lnear polarzaton recever ( ) 1. (3.5) 1 If the staton wth lnear recever s a sngle dsh, we have no way to compute the K matrx from any lnear-lnear cross-correlaton. Although the converson wth the C hybrd matrx s stll possble, not correctng for the X and Y gans beforehand may lead to strong tme-dependent leakage-lke effects n the crcular-crcular vsbltes after the converson. Fortunately, we can stll use the nformaton encoded n the mxed vsbltes to perform a proper calbraton. If V rr and V ll are vsbltes for the parallel-hand correlatons RR and LL, respectvely, then V rr /V ll = 1, regardless of the source structure (and provded that the source s not crcularly polarzed). Let us now suppose that the frst antenna of the baselne observes wth a lnear recever. Each polarzaton channel, X and Y, s affected by a dfferent gan, G x and G y. However, f the polarzaton leakage s neglgble, the only quantty that s mportant for the calbraton before the polarzaton converson s the rato of gans (.e., the cross-polarzaton gan), G x /G y = G x/y, whch can be fortunately derved n an easy way. If we wrte V rr /V ll n terms of the mxed-polarzaton vsbltes and the gan ratos, we can defne a norm, χ 2, whose mnmum wll determne the gan ratos: [ χ 2 = Vxr ω G 1 x/y V 2 yr k k V xl G 1 x/y + V (G L/R ) 1 1], (4.1) yl where ω k s the weght of the k-th vsblty matrx and G L/R s the rato of gans of the antenna(s) wth crcular recevers. An advantage of ths equaton s that G x/y shall be stable over tme, so we can apply long ntegraton tmes to derve χ 2 and use ths approach even wth weak sources. If the leakage s not neglgble, more complex expressons for χ 2 are obtaned. 5. Implementaton of the polarzaton converson We have developed PolConvert, the calbraton/converson software that wll be used n mm- VLBI observatons wth the phased-alma. The program reads the VLBI data n standard FITS- IDI format and converts the vsbltes to a pure crcular bass. It can optonally read CASA 4
5 calbraton tables to compute the K matrx(ces) (Eq. 3.4), and correct the VLBI vsbltes (Eq. 3.1) before the polarzaton converson. The CASA tables currently supported n PolConvert are: G Jones (.e. gan and X-Y phase), B Jones (.e., bandpass), K Jones (.e., delay) 1, and D Jones (.e., polarzaton leakage). As noted above, all these tables are optonal for the calbraton/converson. 5.1 Testng the algorthm. Smulatons We have developed a smulator program to test the performance of the calbraton/converson algorthm mplemented n PolConvert. Our program generates synthetc data under realstc condtons. It accounts for nose from the recevers, sgnal quantzaton (ampltude and tme), and corrupton effects (atmosphere). The smulator creates a synthetc set of ALMA-only cross-correlatons (n a pure lnear bass) and the correspondng phased-up data streams, whch are cross-correlated wth the streams smulated for a VLBI staton recordng n a crcular bass. We then calbrate the ALMA-only vsbltes followng the usual ALMA reducton procedures, to derve the gan matrces of all the ALMA antennas. Fnally, we let PolConvert compute the K matrx, apply t to the VLBI frnges, and rewrte them n a pure crcular bass. In Fg. 1, we show an example of one of our smulatons. In ths case, the source s pont-lke and unpolarzed, wth a flux densty of 1 Jy. The vsbltes n the mxed bass are shown at the top of the fgure. Strong bandpass effects and phase offsets can be clearly seen. At bottom left, we show the vsbltes converted to crcular bass, but wthout pre-applyng any correcton (.e. K) matrx. Ths fgure llustrates the data qualty that we would obtan f the polarzaton converson were appled ether at the recordng or at the correlaton stage (.e., before knowng the true gans of each ndvdual ALMA antenna). There s a large polarzaton leakage left n the cross-hand correlatons (about 10% of the source flux densty!). Fnally, at bottom rght we show the vsbltes resultng from the full calbraton and converson usng PolConvert. All bandpass and leakage artfacts dsappear and the resultng vsblty s fully corrected. 5.2 Testng the algorthm. Real VLBI observatons On 22 May 2014, we performed a frnge-test VLBI sesson at 86 GHz, usng the Onsala 20 m telescope and the Effelsberg radotelescope. Durng part of ths sesson, whle observng the source OJ 287, the staff at Onsala removed the quarter waveplate at the recever s frontend, hence sendng the sky radaton n lnear bass drectly nto the recevng dpoles. Effelsberg contnued data recordng wth no changes n ts recever. Hence, durng that tme wndow, Onsala was recordng the sgnal n lnear (X/Y) bass, whle Effelsberg was recordng n crcular (R/L) bass. We correlated these data wth DfX, whch resulted n frnges n a mxed polarzaton bass, and performed a run of PolConvert, to obtan the frnges n a pure crcular bass. In Fg. 2, we show the ampltude frnges of ths observaton n delay-rate space. At left, the frnges are shown n the mxed bass; at rght, n pure crcular bass. Only weak detectons are found n all four correlaton products for the mxed bass. However, the sgnals are very clear n the parallel-hand correlatons of the crcular bass (RR and LL). The cross-hand correlatons (RL and LR) do not show any clear detecton, as t should be the case for an unpolarzed source. 1 Not to be confused wth our full calbraton K matrx 5

Conclusons We have developed PolConvert, the software for the calbraton/converson of the ALMA mm- VLBI vsbltes. We have successfully tested PolConvert wth realstc synthetc data and wth real state-of-the-art VLBI observatons, performed n mxed polarzaton bass. We have shown that t s possble to fully calbrate and convert the VLBI vsbltes related to ALMA. If the staton wth lnear recevers s a sngle dsh, we propose a specal calbraton algorthm, based on vsblty ratos, to properly convert the vsbltes to a crcular bass.
