4 4 5 AN INTRODUCTION TO GPS. WHAT IS GPS? The GPS (Global Positioning System) operated by the U.S department of Defence and GLONASS operated by the Russian Federation are a space-based navigation system formed from a network of satellites which determine the position of a vehicle using signals from the 32 satellites that circle the earth. These satellites travel in known orbits that allow a land based receiver to determine its own position in relation to each satellite from which it receives a signal. The GPS antenna fitted to the machine receives continuous signals from the GPS satellites. Ground based GPS receivers, at known locations across the country, receive the same signals. As their absolute location is known, they can calculate the real time position and send a position correction signal. Geostationary satellites then return the correction signal to the GPS receiver on the vehicle, and the correction can be applied to the received position. The signals generated by GPS alone are not accurate enough for use in agriculture. Therefore, corrections must be made to GPS signals to improve their accuracy. With these correction signals we refer to the system as DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System). HOW ACCURATE IS GPS? An uncorrected GPS or GLONASS signal gives you position accuracy between 5 to 10 meters. This is more than adequate for car navigation systems, but not accurate enough for vehicle guidance in agricultural applications, where we need Pass-to-Pass and Year-to-Year accuracy and repeatability. Pass-to-Pass accuracy measures the relative accuracy over a 15 minute interval. This is usually thought of as skip/ overlap from one pass to the next when driving swaths. A New Holland receiver with pass-to-pass accuracy of +/-2.5 cm means you get less than +/-2.5 cm skip or overlap, 95% of the time. Year-to-Year accuracy is the measure of repeatable accuracy which means that you can drive the same rows a day, week, month, or year later. So, +/- 2.5 cm year-to-year accuracy means you can drive the same rows next year within +/- 2.5 cm of this year s rows, 95% of the time.

NEW HOLLAND PLM THE COMPLETE, FLEXIBLE GNSS SYSTEM DOWN TO 2.5 CM ACCURACY cm accuracy with EGNOS / OmniSTAR VBS (Single Frequency Correction) The vehicle with a GPS antenna receives signals from the GPS satellite constellation, and is able to compute its location. Both the EGNOS and OmniSTAR networks have a number of ground base stations located across the area for which they provide a correction service. These base stations receive the same signals from the GPS satellites as does the vehicle. The base stations can calculate the real time position error by comparing the received positions to their known locations. An error correction message is then sent to an upload station, transmitted to a Geostationary Satellite, and then re-transmitted to the receiver on the vehicle. With this error correction message, position accuracy of 20 cm can be achieved. The EGNOS system is in development. The OmniSTAR VBS system is fully operational, with an increased signal reliability cm accuracy with OmniSTAR XP (Dual Frequency Correction) The OmniSTAR XP solution does not use a network of ground based stations for the calculation of the real time position error. Independent satellite monitoring stations based around the world continually read the messages being received from the constellations. By comparing the messages received, with the known theoretical positions for each satellite, an error correction message can be calculated. This message is then sent to an upload station, and transmitted to the vehicle via a Geostationary satellite. By monitoring both code and carrier phase messages from the satellites, a more accurate position resolution can be achieved. OmniSTAR XP is an ideal solution for use in the areas of the world not covered by a ground based network of monitoring stations cm accuracy with OmniSTAR HP (Dual Frequency Correction) The OmniSTAR HP solution uses the dual frequency monitory technology used with the OmniSTAR XP solution, and monitors the signals via a ground based network. Within the area covered by the base station network, this allows a higher accuracy resolution to be calculated. The error correction message is sent to the vehicle via the upload stations and Geostationary satellites. EGNOS 20 cm OmniSTAR XP 12 cm RTK Radio 2.5 cm OmniSTAR VBS 20 cm OmniSTAR HP 10 cm cm accuracy with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) This is a highly precise technology that results in 2.5 cm year-to-year accuracy. This accuracy can be achieved with two communication technologies, depending upon your needs in terms of working area coverage: RTK - Radio transmission RTK can use a local ground based station which receives the same position data as the mobile unit. By comparing the received position to its known actual position, the real time error can be calculated. This error is then transmitted via short wave radio to one or more mobile units. Radio repeaters can be positioned to fill in any areas of signal loss from the base station. Signal loss could be caused by rugged terrain or thick vegetation. Any number of mobile units can be working from the correction signal. RTK VRS (Virtual Reference Station) A mobile terminal containing a SIM card is connected to the GPS receiver, and sends the received position to a central VRS server via the GPRS mobile phone network. At the same time, a network of ground based stations is receiving the same position data. They compute the real time error, and send this over the internet to the VRS server. A position correction for the mobile unit can then be calculated and sent back over the GPRS link. RTK GPS + Glonass By using a GNSS receiver, on both the vehicle and the base station, position information can be read from the Glonass constellation at the same time as receiving messages from the GPS constellation. By using messages from more satellites, position accuracy can be improved, or maintained in more areas. Combined use of the GPS and Glonass constellations is particularly useful in the Northern or Southern hemispheres where satellite visibility is sometimes constrained by terrain or obstacles. 11 ASSISTED GUIDANCE. EZ-STEER SYSTEM THE WORLD S SIMPLEST HANDS-FREE FARMING SYSTEM EZ-Steer is the world s simplest portable hands-free farming system for all vehicle models, old and new. The EZ-Steer system turns the steering wheel for you by combining a friction wheel and a drive motor, which is commanded indirectly, by an output from a guidance display. 13 ALL WIRED UP READY The New Holland IntelliSteer System uses built in steering angle sensors, or a solid state gyro, to keep the Navigation Controller II informed of wheel direction. Also integrated into the hydraulic system is a control valve which converts the signals from the Navigation Controller II into hydraulic movements of the steering system. An additional benefit of using RTK correction with the IntelliSteer system is the guaranteed year-to-year repeatability, which is becoming more important with today s modern farming techniques. ALL IN ONE The IntelliView III display can be used throughout a farming operation and is fitted as standard equipment on your New Holland T7, T8 or T9 tractors as well as CX5000, CX6000, CX8000, CR9000 and FR9000 harvesters. Samples are taken every 30 seconds and the data is sent to the IntelliView III monitor. Sensor calibration is required for each crop type. YIELD MAP The exclusive, patented, high accuracy yield sensor, developed by New Holland is generally recognised as the best in class. Its design neutralises the rubbing effect of the grain. Whatever the kind, the variety or the moisture content of the kernel, the sensor generates an extremely accurate yield measurement. ONE CALIBRATION PER SEASON To reduce unproductive time when switching between crops or when working in varying crop conditions, New Holland combines* feature an automatic crop setting system with fifty crop-specific settings. The operator has the opportunity to programme two harvest settings for each crop and can even save a setting for turning on the headland. The settings include reel speed and position, rotor speed and concave setting, sieve opening and cleaning fan speed. Furthermore there is no need to re-calibrate the yield sensor when switching between fields, crops or even between cereal and maize season. *CX5000, CX6000, CX8000 and CR9000 models

Combined with the New Holland PLM package, you get enhanced harvesting performance and improved yield mapping. AVAILABILITY CX5000, CX6000, CX8000 and CR9000. HOW IT WORKS. The SmartSteer system records the difference in time taken for the laser beam to reflect from the stubble and the uncut crop. Using this information the exact line of uncut crop can be detected and signals sent to the steering system. The inside edge of the combine header is then reliably guided precisely along the line of uncut crop with a high degree of precision. SmartSteer guidance system utilizes every last inch of header width. By comparing the height between uncut crop and stubble, it takes control and steers the combine to fill the header on every pass. On CX8000 and CR9000 the operator can set the laser scanner to detect crop edge on either the left or right hand side of the header by adjustment from within the cab. On CX5000 and CX6000 only the left hand side of the header can be detected. Because the SmartSteer system is fitted to the combine itself, it remains independent of whichever header is fitted.

19 AUTOMATIC ROW GUIDANCE SYSTEM AVAILABILITY CX5000, CX6000, CX8000, CR9000 and FR9000. MAIZE HEADERS SOLUTION A simple mechanical system ensures the combine or the forage harvester follows the crop rows. It takes the stress out of harvesting when using wide headers and high operating speeds or when harvesting with bad visibility. More than just productivity increases, it also reduces operator fatigue, allowing full performance during harvest. ARMS DEFLECTION BASED GUIDANCE SOLUTION. Touch sensor arms in the front of a row unit continuously monitor the maize row. Based on this information, the harvester electronic system controls the steering valve and keeps the combine on course in any type of maize crop.

The Autopilot system can be integrated into most brands of tractor and harvesting machinery. Using the machine s electro hydraulic circuit to provide automatic guidance, this retrofit solution will significantly increase your efficiency during field preparation, planting and harvesting by driving more accurately and consistently during extended periods behind the wheel. Retrofit installation kits are compatible with most manufacturers implements. TRUE GUIDE IMPLEMENT CONTROL The TrueGuide implement guidance system uses the existing tractor Autopilot system to improve implement accuracy. There is no need to hang additional steering equipment on the implement just to get better control and minimize the downdraft effect on severe hillsides.
