Aircraft Obstruction Lights
INDELEC Group Founded in 1955, INDELEC became in the nineties the world leading Early Streamer Emission lightning protection systems manufacturer. The Group includes more than 10 branches in France proposing a large scope of products and services for the construction industry, from the preliminary risk assessment and technical survey up to the installation of the lightning protection systems on site by our highly skilled technicians. In 2004, in addition to its core business, INDELEC Group had the opportunity to enlarge its range of products. INDLEC Group is manufacturing a complete range of innovative and reliable lights from Low to High Intensity, following the requirements of the ICAO. All its products are certified by the French civil aviation authorities STNA. [ 1 ]
INTRODUCTION Aircraft warning lights are lighting devices that are attached to tall structures and are used as collision avoidance measures. Such devices make structures more visible to passing aircraft and are usually used at night, although they may be used during the day as well. These lights need to be visible for miles around and they are fitted on a fairly large range of structures: - Buildings - Metallic towers (TV and radio broadcasting, Telecom, Lighting poles ) - High Voltage overhead lines - Bridges - Cranes - Wind turbines -Airport -Industry (Chimney) On day time, the lights are either switched off using a dimmer or their intensity is reduced since the aircrafts pilots can see the structures. In specific cases, the local aviation authorities may require these structures to be marked (red and white) or fitted with warning spheres (overhead lines). On night time, the lights must be on permanently so a master / slave pair of lights is usually installed on the structure the system switching automatically on the slave light if the master one fails. [ 2 ]
Standards The main reference worldwide for Obstacle Warning Lights is the Annex 14 of the IACO convention: [ 3 ]
Obstacle Warning Lights Parameters The Obstacle warning lights are defined by the following specifications which help the user to s ight type according to the ICAO Annex 14 requirements: Color The Lights can be RED or WHITE. Flashing/Fixed The lights can be fixed or flashing with the ICAO requiring a range of 20 to 60 flash per minute. Intensity(in candela cd) The light intensity is ranking from a minimum of 10cd up to 200,000 cd and above. Low Intensity Light Type A : Red color, fixed, minimum 10Cd ; Type B : Red color, fixed, minimum 32Cd ; Medium Intensity Light Type A : White color, flashing, daytime 20,000Cd, nighttime 2,000Cd ; Type B : Red color, flashing, nighttime only, minimum 2,000Cd; Type C : Red color, fixed, nighttime minimum 2,000Cd; High Intensity Light Type A : White color, flashing, daytime 200,000Cd, twilight 20,000Cd, nighttime 2,000 Cd. Lifetime Depending to the technology used (bulb lamps, LED ), the lifetime of the lights varies. Specific attention to long life duration has to be paid since the lights are usually not easily accessible. Power Supply Various options for DC (12 to 48Vdc) or AC (110Vac to 240Vac) are proposed. Synchronization Whenever several lights are fixed on the same structure, their flashes must be synchronized, as well as the ON/OFF time or changes of intensity (for example, Type A Medium intensity switching from 20,000cd on day time and 2,000cd at night time). Synchronization is available by wire, optical fiber, GPS or TCPIP. Construction The lights are used outdoor so the IP Rating, the fixings and the temperature range the light can withstand must be considered. [ 4 ]
Obstacle Warning Lights Installation Location The location and number of Lights is based on the height (above ground) of the structure with the following requirements from ICAO: Structure Height Structure < 45 m Obstacle Warning Light Low Intensity 10cd minimum 45m > structure < 150m Structure < 150m Medium Intensity Type A or B and Low Intensity type B High Intensity Type A ICAO requirements > 45m ICAO requirements > 150m Note The height should be considered from the ground level or the summits of surroundings buildings. [ 5 ]
Obstacle Warning Lights Installation Schematic Design for structures < 45m Note: The light must be visible at 360. Installation at each corner is required is there is no protruding structure. Building < 45m Note: The light must be located between 1.5m to 3m max from the highest point of the structure Construction crane < 45m Construction crane > 45m Note: Installation at each extremity is required. Note: Medium Intensity flashing light is required. [ 6 ]

Obstacle Warning Lights Installation Schematic Design for Wind Turbines The installation of Obstacle Warning Lights on Wind Turbines could be governed by specific regulations. As an example, the French regulation dated November 13, 2009 includes specific requirements: Medium Intensity Light type A on the top of the tower (white color, flashing, 20,000 cd during the day, red colour, flashing, 2,000 cd during night). In addition, if the total height of the wind turbine (including the blades) exceeds 150m, additional Low Intensity Type B lights are required along the Tower. WindTurbine Height Levels LowIntensityType B Lights location 150 < h < 200m 1 45 m 200 < h < 250m 2 45 et 90m 250 < h < 300m 3 45, 90 et 135m Wind Turbine > 150m Medium Intensity Lights 20,000cd - Flashing 198m 45m Low Intensity Lights 32 cd [ 9 ]
Obstacle Warning Lights Installation Wiring requirements The Obstacle Warning Lights are usually available in AC 230V voltage or DC Voltage (12Vdc, 24Vdc or 48Vdc). Besides the voltage, the most important requirement of ICAO deals with the uninterruptible service. The power supply must be equipped with a back up (UPS) to ensure the lights are still powered in case the main power supply is down. Besides, it may also require the installation of two lights: one Master and one Slave that will automatically start as soon as the Master light is not working properly. Lastly, the Consultant/civil aviation authorities may also require the lights to flash altogether (for Medium and High Intensity lights). So a main power supply cabinet might be required to synchronize the lights flashes as well as integrating the UPS capabilities.
