1 Industry experience with ERTMS Level 1 Trackside A CASAZZA (Ansaldo STS) UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. September

2 First ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 applications Experience on ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 applications started in 1999 with ETCSVB Pilot Project (Vienna - Budapest Line) Participating companies were: Ansaldo STS, Alstom, Siemens & Thales UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. September

3 Level 1 lines in commercial operation (1/2) Today, there are more than 2700 km of lines in commercial operation running on ERTMS level 1 in 8 different countries spanning speeds of up to 300 km/h (Madrid Lleida Tarragona) By the end of the year, 350 additional km will be added, completing a total length of over 3000 km worldwide UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. 12 Radio In-fill for ETCS L1 (1/3) ERTMS/ETCS L1 performance can be improved by the use of Radio In-fill UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. September

13 Why Radio In-fill: it provides information about the next main signal aspect in advance with respect to the main signal balise group. The on board system can display new information to the driver as soon as it is available, even at standstill, allowing to restart or to release brakes if the next main signal clears Radio In-fill for ETCS L1 (2/3) Radio Infill Unit the information is provided via radio therefore in a continuous way, in contrast with the spot transmission of a balise group and the semi-continuous of a loop the information is provided in a safe way, the radio transmission being based on the Euroradio protocol LEU UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. 14 Radio In-fill for ETCS L1 (3/3) Enhanced Radio In-fill: foreseen for ETCS Baseline 3.0 possibility to have two communication sessions simultaneously so to have seamless infill information related to a chain of main signals UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12. September

15 Conclusion ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 allows a transparent migration from a national signalling system to an interoperable European standard ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 can be supplemented with Radio In-fill functionality so to improve performance (Baseline 2.3.0) Performance will be further improved in Baseline with Enhanced Radio In-fill UIC ERTMS World Conference Berne 12.
