5 Introduction Personal profile What is Personal Profile? In connection with the E90 and future model series, the term "personal profile" refers to the sum of all vehicle functions that can be personalized. Personalization means that the vehicle user(s) can themselves influence the execution or display/indication of certain vehicle functions (e.g. position of outside mirrors) and store the settings dependent on the type of identification transmitter used. The settings are stored in the control units that control or are decisive for the functions. 1 - Transition from CKM functions to personal profile In previous model series, the personalized functions are realized with the car and key memory function. The scope of personal profile functions in the E90 is based on the scope of functions of the car and key memory in the E60. The general philosophy of the personal profile is to place the individual setting of the vehicle functions in the hand of the customer. Subsequently, the customer can quickly and flexibly change "his/her" settings and therefore adapt the vehicle at any time to his/ her personal requirements within the framework of the given options. In addition, the scope of personalized functions that can be changed only via the BMW diagnostics system is drastically reduced. The personal profile functions are realized only by way of the correct interaction between various control units. Personal profile is therefore an example of distributive functions which is set to become ever more important in the future. Functionality Set by E46 E65 E60 E87 E90 EX Car (vehicle-specific Dealer/workshop only X X personalization) User and dealer X X X User X (person-specific Dealer/workshop only X personalization) User and dealer X User only X X X X Car/key function A general distinction is made between two types of personalization functions: Car functions functions. Car functions Car functions facilitate vehicle-specific personalization, i.e. only one setting per vehicle is possible. The status of changed car functions is stored such that it is generally applicable and the functionalities have the same effect for each of the authorized car users. After opening or accessing, the vehicle always exhibits the same person-independent status for each user. The car user or a user group has the opportunity of influencing selected functions in the required manner. Cars can be differentiated in this way. This means from a customer point of view individually set vehicles (choice) behave differently even when the vehicles are of the same model series and same type. 3

5 functions 2 - Several users can individually set various vehicle functions functions enable several person-specific personalizations, i.e. several settings (depending on the number of identification transmitters) are possible per vehicle. Several car users can individually set various functions in the vehicle without changing the settings of other users. When changing the vehicle user, all settings of the new vehicle user are retrieved automatically and the functionalities are adapted in the manner corresponding to his/her choice. For the user it appears as if the car "shows initiative" and "remembers" his/her personal settings. In the E90 and future model series there will be ever more key functions that can be set directly by the customer. Conversely, there will be less and less car functions that can be set by the customer or dealer/workshop. 4

6 System overview Personal profile Personal profile control units 5

6 1 - Overview of control units for personal profile functions in the E90 Control units relevant to personal profile functions are highlighted. 6

6 Index Explanation FRM Footwell module CID Central information display Kombi Instrument cluster CON Controller USIS Ultrasonic passenger-compartment sensor SMFA Driver's seat module FZD Roof function centre CAS2 Car access system 2 IHKA Automatic climate control CA Comfort access RAD1 Radio 1 (Audio/Business CD) Radio 2 (Professional) Multi-audio system controller Car communication computer CDC CD changer TOP-HIFI Top HiFi amplifier ASP Outside mirrors SBFA Switch block, driver's door SINE Siren with tilt alarm sensor RLS Rain/light sensor TAGE Electronic outer door handle module 7

6 Recognition of the identification transmitter 2 - Transferring the number of the identification transmitter to the car access system 2 in the E90 Index Explanation Index Explanation 1 FBD antenna in the rear window 3 Car access system 2 2 Diversity module 4 Identification transmitter When the vehicle is unlocked with the identification transmitter, the number of the transmitter is transmitted via the FBD antenna to the car access system 2. The car access system 2 assigns the number of the identification transmitter to a personalization number and sends this personalization number via the data busses to other control units. On receiving the personalization number, the individual control units execute the settings defined for the key memory. 8

6 3 - Identification transmitter in its compartment Index Explanation 1 Slot 2 Identification transmitter When the identification transmitter is placed in the slot, the car access system 2 again checks the validity and the number of the identification transmitter. On completion of the successful check, the car access system 2 assigns the number of the identification transmitter to a personalization number and sends this personalization number via the data busses to other control units. Unlocking via door lock A signal is sent from the footwell module to CAS2 when the vehicle is unlocked with the mechanical key via the driver's door lock. The CAS2 interprets the key as identification transmitter number 15 or it assigns the workshop profile to it. The workshop profile remains active also after the identification transmitter has been inserted in its slot. Service personnel should always unlock the vehicles using the mechanical key via the driver's door lock in order not to change the customer settings. 3 In some country-specific versions, the alarm system can be operated only with the identification transmitter. Unlocking these vehicles via the door lock will trigger the alarm. To cancel the alarm: Unlock vehicle with identification transmitter or insert identification transmitter in its compartment. 1 Recognising the identification transmitter in connection with the comfort access option On vehicles equipped with the comfort access option the car access system 2 also assigns the number of the identification transmitter to the personalization number. The difference in this system is that the comfort access 2 control unit requests the identification transmitter to identify itself. The number of the identification transmitter is assigned to the personalization number only once and that before unlocking the doors. 9

6 Memory configuration in the CAS2 The car access system 2 manages two different numbers for each identification transmitter belonging to the vehicle: Number of the identification transmitter Personalization number. Number of the identification transmitter Personalization number The CAS2 assigns a personalization number to the number of the identification transmitter depending on the type of identification transmitter (key) and the way the vehicle was unlocked. The memory configuration is illustrated in the following table. Note (customer profile 1) (customer profile 2) (customer profile 3) 3 Not used 4 Not used 5 Not used 6 Not used 7 Not used 8 Not used 9 Not used - 10 Unpersonalized (not connected to an identification transmitter) - 14 Default profile (not connected to an identification transmitter) - 15 Invalid / workshop profile (not connected to an identification transmitter) Storing personal profile settings Any changes to the personal profile settings are immediately effective. For each personal profile function, there is always a control unit (function master) in which the settings are stored depending on the type of identification transmitter used. The bus system to which the function master is connected determines when the implemented changes are stored: The control units that are connected to the K-CAN save the settings when removing the identification transmitter from its slot at the latest. The control units connected to the MOST save the settings after locking the vehicle and the MOST bus assumes sleep mode. 4 - Start/stop button 3 The K-CAN assumes sleep mode after the light in the start/stop button has gone out. The MOST then also assumes sleep mode approx. 15 seconds after. 1 3 The control units retain the saved settings even after disconnecting the battery. 1 10

7 Functions Personal profile Decentral and central functions The personal profile functions are subdivided into decentral (distributed) and central function. This subdivision is necessary to ensure a clearly arranged overview of the personal profile functions. Subdivision of the decentral (distributed) and central functions is based only on the entry/setting location and display of the personal profile functions. Central personal profile functions are entered centrally (via the controller, radio buttons or steering column stalk) and their status is displayed centrally (central information display, radio or instrument cluster display). As the name suggests, decentral (distributive) functions are entered decentrally (at the IHKA control panel, driver's door switch pad or seat adjustment switch) and are independent of the type of radio/navigation system installed. 11

7 Decentral personal profile functions The following decentral personal profile functions will be realized at the launch of the E90: Air conditioning functions Positions of outside mirrors Driver's seat adjustments. Air conditioning functions 1 - IHKA control panel Index Explanation Index Explanation 1 Air distribution setting: - Top - Bottom - Centre 5 Switch A/C compressor on or off 2 Temperature setting for driver 6 Switch automatic recirculating air control on or off 3 Blower setting 7 Switch automatic climate control on or off 4 Temperature setting for front passenger 12

7 All the air conditioning functions specified above are key functions. On vehicles equipped with a navigation system, the air distribution can be finely adjusted via the controller/central information display. The IHKA is the function master for all air conditioning functions. Positions of outside mirrors Storage of the outside mirror positions is also a key function. The set positions of the left/ right mirrors can be personalized in connection with the following options: SA 459 Seat memory SA 313 Outside mirror package SA 430 Interior and exterior mirrors with automatic anti-dazzle function. The footwell module FRM serves as the function master for setting and storing the positions of the outside mirrors. Driver's seat adjustments The following settings of the driver's seat are personalized (key functions) on vehicles equipped with a seat memory (SA 459): Forward/backward adjustment Height adjustment, front/rear Backrest tilt. The lumbar support and backrest width settings are not personalized. The driver's seat module SMFA is the function master for adjusting and storing the seat positions. The SMFA also serves as the mechanical master. The mechanical master is mainly responsible for automatically triggering the mechanical settings on detection of the identification transmitter. The information necessary for establishing whether and when the driver's seat and outside mirror automatically assume the position last stored by the respective user is stored in the driver's seat module SMFA. 2 - Menu item "Last seat position" The moment the mechanical settings are activated can be selected under the menu item "Door Locks/Central Locking/Last Seat Position" in the "Vehicle Settings" menu: After unlocking the vehicle After unlocking the vehicle and opening the driver's door No automatic setting of the positions (deactivation). No mechanical activities are performed even when a valid identification transmitter is detected. The driver himself can define the type and moment of activation in vehicles equipped with a navigation system ( or ). On vehicles with no navigation system but equipped with the option 459 (seat memory) the corresponding selection is performed in the workshop via CIP and the appropriate menu item. The mechanical settings for the driver's seat and outside mirror can be changed only when the user identifier (personalization number) has changed and when the automatic positioning facility is not deactivated. A further condition is that the engine must not be running at the start of automatic positioning. This requirement is for safety reasons, e.g. to ensure the driver does not move away from the brake pedal while driving. 13

7 3 - Signal progression when unlocking the vehicle and activating the mechanical settings of the driver's seat and outside mirror Index Explanation Index Explanation 1 Diversity module 7 Switch block, driver's door 2 Car access system 2 8 Outside mirror, left 3 Driver's seat module 9 Footwell module 4 Seat memory 10 Identification transmitter 5 Seat adjustment switch 11 Antenna for remote control services in the rear window 6 Outside mirror, right 14

7 When unlocking the vehicle with the identification transmitter, the number of the identification transmitter is sent via the FBD antenna in the rear window and diversity module to the CAS 2. CAS 2 assigns the number of the identification transmitter to a personalization number and sends this personalization number via the data busses to other control units. The special status of the driver's seat module SMFA as the mechanical master now comes into play. Although the FRM has received the personalization number from CAS 2 it will not position the outside mirror for as long as it receives no corresponding instruction from the SMFA. This means the driver's seat module SMFA sends a separate command to the FRM in order to position the outside mirror. Normally, the vehicle user waits while the mechanically operated components reach their end position. The user can cancel the movement of the mechanical components through following actions: By pressing the lock button on the identification transmitter By closing the driver's door (by opening the driver's door only when starting the movement) By pressing the seat memory buttons (no memory is called up) By pressing the seat buttons (the seat is not moved) By removing the identification transmitter from its compartment (by inserting the identification transmitter in its compartment only when starting the movement) By starting the engine. The automatic movement can be continued by unlocking the vehicle again or be reinserting the identification transmitter in its compartment. 15

8 Service information Personal profile Replacing the identification transmitter The E90 is equipped with 2 identification transmitters as standard. A third identification transmitter can be ordered on customer request. As a result, a total of 3 effective profiles are available to the customer and differ based on the identification transmitter (number of the identification transmitter and the personalization number). 1 - Identification transmitter in the E90 Index Explanation 1 Identification transmitter 2 Mechanical key The car access system 2 manages two different numbers for each identification transmitter belonging to the vehicle: Number of the identification transmitter Personalization number. Number of the identification transmitter The number of the identification transmitter cannot be changed. This number is stored only once in the car access system 2. If lost, an identification transmitter must be disabled via the BMW diagnosis system (service function). Select service functions: Body Closing and safety function /remote control Disable/enable. The remaining identification transmitter(s) must be read via the BMW diagnosis system in order to identify the lost identification transmitter. Up to 10 identification transmitters can be used (loss,...). The car access system 2 must be replaced if all 10 identification transmitters are invalid or lost. Personalization number The personalization number is necessary for calling up the key functions. With the aid of the BMW diagnosis system, the personalization number can be assigned to another number of the identification transmitter. Select service functions: Body Closing and safety function /remote control PIN. When a new identification transmitter is ordered, the original personalization number must be read out via the BMW diagnosis system and assigned to the new identification transmitter. The following service functions are available for the personalization number: Display of personalization number Transfer of personalization number from remote control to remote control Enter or change personalization number. 31

8 Retrofitting via CIP 2 - Personal profile settings via CIP/retrofit Index Explanation 1 Menu item "Activate/deactivate radio interior protection" 2 Menu item "Activate/deactivate tilt alarm sensor" Depending on the type of radio or navigation system, some personal profile settings are entered not under the car/key memory menu item as before but rather via CIP and the retrofits menu item. Retrofitting on vehicles with navigation system (with or ) On E90 vehicles equipped with a navigation system ( or ), the following settings can be made under the "Retrofitting" menu in CIP: Radio interior motion sensor Active Not active Tilt alarm sensor Active Not active. 32

8 Retrofitting on vehicles with no navigation system (no or ) On E90 vehicles equipped with no navigation system ( or ), the following settings can be made under the "Retrofitting" menu in CIP: Radio interior motion sensor Active Not active Tilt alarm sensor Active Not active Comfort seat After unlocking the door After unlocking and opening the door Deactivation Daytime driving light (EU/US) Activate Deactivate Selective central locking ZV Activate Deactivate Threshold for automatic driving light control (FLC) Normal Sensitive Very sensitive. Saving CKM values The "Save CKM values" process has been implemented in the CIP for the purpose of making a backup of the customer settings for programming procedures. A distinction is made as to whether programming is performed with or without control unit replacement: Programming without control unit replacement --> CKM values are saved automatically during the programming procedure Programming with control unit replacement --> The "Save CKM values" function is not effective in this case as the programming procedure must be interrupted and it is not possible to ensure that the same BMW programming system is used. 33
