Model Updates Model: E65, E66 Production: from 9/2005 After completion of this module you will be able to: Recognize the improvement made to the TCU Familiarize yourself with HD Radio TM technology developed by ibiquity Digital Corporation Understand the definition of the term IBOC Know where to access data containing names and frequencies of radio stations that broadcast using HD Radio TM technology 2
Telematics Control Unit The E65 from March 2005 production has been capable of Bluetooth compatibility. The TCU is now (as of 9/2005) also capable of sending GPS data transmission for stolen vehicle recovery. Since the TCU in the E65/E66 has no GPS receiver, a navigation system must be installed and in proper working condition in order to use BMW Assist. The TCU receives the processed position data from the navigation system via the MOST bus. The instrument cluster sends TeleService requests to the TCU. The commands from the steering wheel buttons are sent via the byteflight to the SGM. The data are forwarded from the SGM via the K-CAN S to the control display. The control display places the data on the MOST bus. 3

Functions Up to four BMW-recommended mobile phones with Bluetooth capabilities can be paired simultaneously with the vehicle. If a fifth mobile phone is paired, a request is triggered indicating that one of the paired mobile phones should be deleted from the list. Any or all the entries shown in the following lists can be deleted: Top 8 Last call numbers Missed calls The call tone and the voice volume can be adjusted independently. When the call tone is audible, only the volume of the call tone is influenced by varying the volume. The voice volume remains unchanged. Changing the voice volume in an active voice connection does not influence the volume of the call tone. SMS texts can be sent and received only directly at the mobile phone. No SMS messages are transmitted via the Bluetooth interface between the mobile phone and TCU. The snap-in-adapter can be retrofitted to match the mobile phone. The use of the corresponding snap-in-adapter makes available the charging function and the link of the mobile phone to the roof antenna. Snap-in Adapter with Mobile Phone (front of center console) 7
Service Information Each TCU has a fixed 4-digit Bluetooth passkey, which can be found at following places: Supplement to vehicle literature Sticker on telematics control unit BMW diagnostic system, control unit functions. The Bluetooth passkey can be read out with the BMW diagnostic system. Bluetooth can be enabled and disabled under the menu "Settings -> Telephone". A mobile phone can be paired only when Bluetooth is enabled. The voice quality depends to a great extent on the noise levels in the vehicle interior. Background noise such as wind and ventilation noises adversely affect the voice quality. Vehicle operating noises also affect the voice quality as from a speed of approximately 80 mph (130 km/h). The TCU compensates for the background noise interference by means of electronic filters. The functional principle of the electronic filters also adversely affects the voice quality. Good voice quality is achieved when the driving speed is below 130 km/h, the ventilation is set to low and the windows as well as the sunroof are closed. The snap-in-adapters are of the same design as those used other models. Compatible Bluetooth Phones A listing of compatible Bluetooth phones can be found in the following: => Select BMW USA => Select Bluetooth 8
BMW ASSIST The BMW Assist system incorporates an integrated wireless telephone with advanced digital and analog service plus a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receiver to determine your vehicle's location. Combined, they enable BMW Assist to enhance the BMW driving experience. With BMW Assist, the customer will feel prepared and protected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the case of situations they may find. Activating ASSIST To activate ASSIST, the customer has to complete and sign a subscriber agreement with the sales person. BMW pays for the Safety Plan service for the first year with the subscriber billing information received. Service extensions cost $240 per year (extended contracts are available at a discounted rate). Features The features of ASSIST can be broken down into three main categories: Safety Plan (core program) Convenience Services (optional; requires Safety Plan) Options Safety Plan To make a safety service request simply press the SOS button. This transmits the vehicle location and information. A specialist responds via the hands-free telephone system to coordinate the best course of action for your situation and notify emergency services. The vehicle will attempt to call BMW Assist automatically in the event of a serious accident. If the vehicle ever gets stolen, the BMW Assist service can help the police locate it. This feature may save the customer money on their insurance premium, as well as give peace of mind. Automatic Collision Notification The BMW Assist system transmits the vehicle s current location and vehicle information to the BMW Assist Response Center automatically after an airbag deploys or a severe rear impact occurs. A trained response specialist will then attempt to contact the vehicle via the hands-free telephone system, and will notify the appropriate emergency services of the location and situation, even if response is not returned to the operator/specialist. 9
Emergency Request (SOS) By activating Emergency on the control display or pressing the SOS button, you transmit your location and vehicle information. A BMW Assist response specialist then speaks with you to determine the nature of your emergency and to coordinate the response to your specific assistance needs. The specialist can direct emergency services to your vehicle's location, provide you with emergency directions to the nearest hospital or police station, and even notify your emergency contacts about your situation. Enhanced Roadside Assistance If you experience a flat tire, run out of gas, or need any other roadside help for your vehicle, just press the Wrench or Roadside Assistance button to transmit your location and vehicle information. The BMW Assist Response Center then links you to BMW Roadside Assistance for the appropriate dispatch to your location, even if you don't know where you are. Stolen Vehicle Recovery (5/6 Series from 10/04, 3 Series from 5/2005, & Series from 9/2005) If the BMW is equipped with this capability and is ever stolen, the BMW Assist Response Center can be notified by calling toll free (888) immediately after filing the police report. The center can remotely activate the BMW Assist system to locate the vehicle and help the police recover it. Customer Relations (5, 6 and 7 Series) For questions, compliments or concerns, The BMW Customer Relations department can be reached by pressing the ASSIST button or selecting customer relations from the CD/CID idrive Menu. 7 Series drivers can also easily contact their preferred BMW center. Manual and Automatic Service Request (5/6 Series from 10/04, 3/7 Series from 2006 model year) The vehicle's service condition (condition based service) is transmitted automatically or the customer s request to the preferred BMW center. The customer s service advisor will then call the subscriber to set up a convenient appointment. 10
Convenience Plan A personal concierge is available to assist with business or personal arrangements such as making hotel or dinner reservations, buying event tickets, or even finding that perfect gift. Concierge This feature takes advantage of BMW Assist Concierge and utilize BMW's expert resources for travel arrangements, service referrals, shopping, entertainment, business outings and much more. BMW Assist Concierge addresses needs in many areas in life, not just those related to the driving experience. The concierge service is part of the Convenience Plan and can be used at any time, from anywhere by dialing toll-free (800) or via This feature is available to the main and secondary subscriber. Directions, Traffic and Weather Pressing the SOS button allows the customer to contact a a navigation specialist for step by step directions to a desired street address or point of interest. Up to-date traffic reports along the route can be obtained as well as the weather forecast locally or at the destination. The customer can access this feature for free for the first forty-five days (up to 3 events) after activating an account (credit card information received). The Convenience Plan offers unlimited access this feature 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a fee of $120 a year after the forty-five days. Optional Services Make hands-free personal calls with the BMW handset or an approved Bluetooth phone. Hands-free Personal Calling Using an approved Bluetooth cellular phone will allow the customer to call hands-free without any cords or cables getting in their way. The phone will completely integrate with the vehicle s electrical system. 11
HD Radio TM BMW Group will introduce HD Radio Technology developed by the ibiquity Digital Corporation starting with the 9/2005 production 7 Series. ibiquity Digital is the sole developer of HD Radio technology. This technology is approved by the FCC for the US market. This company does not actually produce radios nor audio equipment. They are responsible for licensing this technology for use in the radio industry. The benefits to digital radio are: AM will sound like present day FM FM will have compact-disc-like quality Improved Fidelity Free programming (only cost is for IBOC receiver) Supplemental Program Services (SPS) - Station ID, Title, Artist, Album, Genre, etc. Improved Reception (depending on digital data received) Analog to Digital (Digital to Analog) switching depending on reception quality Principles of Operation The HD Radio technology used in our IBOC control unit practically transparent to the user in terms of tuning. IBOC is the acronym for In-Band On-Channel. This signifies that the location for the digital radio signals can be found in the exact same location on the dial as the analog signals. FM101.1 in the analog realm is also FM101.1 in the digital realm. One benefit this arrangement is that the investment for a radio station is not immense due to the fact they are utilizing the same frequency and minor equipment changes are necessary. This also allows for a practically seamless and user friendly operation while tuning into a radio station. Initially, radio station broadcasting with ibiquity Digital s HD Radio technology broadcasts two signals in the same frequency range. One signal is analog with an 8 second delay and the other is digital. This is known as Hybrid Mode. Eventually the radio stations will stop transmitting in Hybrid Mode and will go to purely digital. The time frame is not yet established. 12
Diagram of Analog Signal with Digital Signals ( attached at the upper and lower spectrums) 1. Stations bundle analog and digital audio signals (with textual data, such as artist and song information, weather and traffic, and more). 2. The digital signal layer is compressed using ibiquity's HDC compression technology. 3. The combined analog and digital signals are transmitted. 4. The most common form of interference, multi-path distortion, occurs when part of a signal bounces off an object and arrives at the receiver at a different time than the main signal. HD Radio receivers are designed to sort through the reflected signals and reduce static, hiss, pops and fades. 5. The signal will be compatible with HD Radio receivers and analog radios. Graphic Representation of How Signals Are Transmitted from Radio Stations 13
There is an eight second delay in the analog signal in order to allow the digital signal to be decoded the module upon arriving. This synchronizes the two signals by the time it is output via the sound system. Because the radio stations are transmitting both analog and digital signals, radios that are not HD Radio capable can still receive and output sounds by utilizing the analog signals received. The time delay broadcasted also allows the IBOC control unit to make up for lost transmission data. In the figure below you see that the station sent an analog signal out with a time delay of 4 seconds (in real life 8 seconds). Illustration of Time Delay in Signals Let s say that each number represents information packets. i.e. 1 is a packet of information, 2 is another...so on. If analog packets 2 & 3 are lost in transmission, the corresponding digital packets 1 & 2 are not affected. Instead digital packets 6 & 7 are affected. When the signals are output from the IBOC control unit to the audio output device, the signals have already been synchronized. This means that even though information was lost (analog packets 2 & 3 and digital packets 6 & 7), the IBOC control unit can seamlessly switch between the analog and digital signals compile a complete signal. A radio equipped with HD Radio technology normally utilized the digital signals broadcasted by the radio stations (if the HD function is turned on). If the digital signals received by the IBOC control unit are corrupted, the IBOC control unit can switch to analog mode and act as a conventional radio. 14
E65 Bus Topology Chart In a vehicle equipped with the high definition option, the IBOC control unit replaces the AVT. IBOC Control Unit 15
Service Information Control Unit The IBOC control unit has few connections to it. Due to the fact that it is a component on the MOST bus the majority of the communication takes place via the bus and not hardwire. The control unit connections are as follows: IBOC Control Unit Index Explanation 1 Antenna Connector 2 Power and Ground Connector 3 MOST bus Connector The grounding to the control unit is imperative. Performance issues will arise if the control unit is not properly grounded to the vehicle. 16
