About ESA s GSP and Alcantara The General Studies Programme (GSP) interfaces in different ways with all of ESA's programmes, but its main role is to act as a "think tank", laying the groundwork for the agency s future activities. Alcantara: A bridge with International Research Partners supporting cooperation between research groups in Europe and those based elsewhere, in study areas of mutual benefit. ESA s Alcantara " bridgeالقنطرة in arabic) initiative: a dedicated instrument to support (", research promotion, that recognises the critical role in such effort of leading academic institutions inside and outside Europe. Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. Orus-Perez 26/02/2013 Slide 12
Types of Alcantara Activities Two types of activities Competence Surveys, 6-month studies gathering data of potential partners on a specific topic and geographical region, in preparation for potential Pilot Studies Pilot Studies, 1-year research-oriented activity on a topic of relevance to the region being considered. Currently Pilot Studies are linked to Earth Observation TIGER network in Africa but they may be extended to other topics in the future like ionospheric research in low-latitudes. Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. Orus-Perez 26/02/2013 Slide 13
Current Alcantara Pilot Studies A TIGER II Pilot Study is a collaboration between African scientists and European research institutes involving one-year scientific visits in Europe by African scientists from the TIGER network. European Research Institutes Focus is on Water Management Water quality & reservoir monitoring Irrigation monitoring Ecological & hydrological modeling Integrated Water Resource Management Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. Orus-Perez 26/02/2013 Slide 14
Alcantara initiative: Competence Surveys COMPETENCE SURVEYS for Ionospheric ground based monitoring network in low-latitude regions: Africa, Southeast Asia and South America In preparation of future Pilot Studies with specific institutions for Capacity Building Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. 16 Ionospheric in low-latitude surveys - OBJECTIVES Identify existing ionospheric instrumentation across the region Identify continental, regional, national and local institutions as potential research sites. Eventually lead to enhancements in the understanding, characterisation, monitoring and forecasting of lowlatitude ionosphere Beneficiaries: GNSS users and scientific community Time-frame: October/November 2012 to May/June 2013 Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. 18 Competence Survey: Ionospheric ground based monitoring network in South America (MIMOSA) October 2012 May 2013 Review literature produced from data acquired in the considered area; identify geographical sectors not yet (or only partially) monitored; report peculiarities of the regional ionosphere of interest for the GNSS operations; recognize the local experts in the field. In collaboration with local partners, the team will: identify entities willing to host new installations or establish synergies; delineate the specific use of GNSS in the area considering its overall context; recognize potential users in the area of interest. ESA technical responsible: Roberto Prieto-Cerdeira (Roberto. Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. Orus-Perez 26/02/2013 Slide 18
Competence Survey: Ionospheric ground based monitoring network in Southeast Asia (GINESTRA) November 2012 June 2013 Exploration of the current capabilities of the Southeastern Asian measurement networks for the ionospheric monitoring, Understand how the existing facilities can be integrated with new GNSS based installations, Support or improve space weather activities in the considered area. South Eastern Asian ionosphere, a critical area, since represents an exception to the well-known Equatorial Anomaly. 20 Competence Survey: Ionospheric ground based monitoring network in Africa (1/2) October 2012 May 2013 Identify researchers and institutions in Africa that host at present or could host or support the installation of ionospheric sensors in suitable ground stations and that could take advantage of the exploitation of data. Interact with existing networks: data accessible to the networks but also to the various interested institutions in the region. Identify continental, regional, national and local institutions as potential research sites. Identify possible final users in the region. Supported by Thales Alenia Space France ESA technical responsible: Roberto Prieto-Cerdeira (Roberto. Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. 21 Competence Survey: Ionospheric ground based monitoring network in Africa (2/2) Towards mapping of electron density, scintillation and total electron content October 2012 May 2013 Identify ionospheric instrumentation across Africa Identify continental, regional, national and local institutions as potential research sites. Eventually lead to enhancements in the understanding, characterisation, monitoring and forecasting of African ionosphere Beneficiaries GNSS users and scientific community Supported by Boston College, Fugro, University of Lagos ESA technical responsible: Raul Orus Perez Alcantara Competence Surveys Low-latitude Ionosphere R. Prieto-Cerdeira, R. Orus-Perez 26/02/2013 Slide 21
Future steps Identify potential collaboration within future ESA activities/projects. After surveys are completed, Alcantara may support specific Pilot studies with local researchers.
