3 Teacher Resource Page You will need the Science Weekly Five Start-Up Kit. This is a free download in my store on Teachers Pay Teachers. Station 1: one copy of the reading passage for each student that will be in the station at one time (I like to laminate them for future use and durability) Station 2: Coin, small bowl, cup of water Station 3: resource books on light and sound (optional) Station 4: one or two cup phones (I personally like to have two available, so all of the students in the group can participate at the same time!) You need: string, paper cups To make a cup phone: Punch a small hole in the bottom of each cup with a pencil. Place a piece of string through the hole on each side and tie a knot to keep the string in place. Station 5: one copy of Station 5 Vocabulary per student, scissors, glue

4 light and sound Station 1 read and comprehend Section 1 Light is a form of energy that travels in waves from its source. Light can travel through empty space. This allows us to see the light from the sun on Earth. Electrical energy can change into light energy. When you turn on a light switch, the electrical energy changes into light energy. Section 2 Light can be reflected or refracted when it hits certain objects. Light is reflected when the light waves bounce back. Reflection occurs with mirrors, tinted windows, and even the moon! Section 3 Refraction occurs when light rays bend through a material, or medium. Camera lenses, telescopes, and eyeglasses all refract light. If you look at a pencil in a glass of water, the pencil appears to break at the edge of the water. This is because light is refracting as it passes through different mediums. Section 4 Vibrating objects produce sound energy. If you tap your pencil on the table, the vibrations move through the air in waves to your eardrums. Sound cannot travel through outer space because it must travel through matter. Sound travels faster through solids than air because the particles of matter are closer together.

5 Directions 1. Place the coin in the bowl. light and sound Station 2 explore You will explore how refraction works! 2. Move your face down until you cannot see the coin in the bowl. 3. Have one group member pour water slowly into the bowl until the other group members can see the coin. 4. Draw a model of what happened BEFORE and AFTER the water was poured into the bowl. 5. Write ALL YOU KNOW about refraction! 6. Pour the water from the bowl back into the cup.

6 light and sound Station 3 organize it! You will create a Venn Diagram comparing Light and Sound energy. 1. Copy the following Venn Diagram in your Student Recording Packet. Light Sound 2. Use the Idea Bank to help you add to your Venn Diagram. Add your own ideas, too! 7 light and sound Station 4 center activity You will explore sound with an old phone! Directions 1. Look at the cups and string. This is your phone. 2. Have one person hold one cup and another person hold the other cup. Stretch the phone so the string is pulled tightly. 3. Take turns putting the cup to your ear to listen and speaking into the cup. 4. Answer the following questions in your Science Recording Packet. Questions - How does this phone work? - What role do vibrations play in helping you speak and hear? - Draw and label what you did in this investigation.
