1 Title: SANTA HEAD Software: Serif DrawPlus X8 Author: TeejayJoyce Website: Tutorials by Teejay Skill Level: Intermediate Supplies: None Description: This tutorial uses simple Quick shapes and Filter Effects throughout to make a very cute comical Santa Head. LET S GET STARTED! Throughout this tutorial, you will be using several QuickShapes. When asked to make QuickShape, select the one you wish to use, then double-click in the workspace. This will activate the QuickShape Creator where you can type in the specified sizes for the shape. Open an A4 page choose any colour but white OR you can work in the workspace as this tutorial does for all white shapes. Right click the ruler and set the measure to Pixels. If your rulers are not visible, go View/Layout Tools and check the Ruler. The Beard 1. Select the QuickShape Cloud - Width: 440, Height: 300, Bulges: 8. Line Color: None, Fill Color: White. 2. Make a QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 140, Height: 180. Select the Line Color: none, Fill Color: white. Now place the ellipse at the bottom of the beard. 3. Make a small QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 30, Height: 30. Line Color: none, Fill Color: white. 4. Choose the Pointer tool and Ctrl copy, drag and place a copy of this shape in each pointy section of the beard as in the example. 5. Drag a large box around all the shapes and go to the Arrange tab and choose Add to combine the shapes into one. 6. Now we can give our beard some dimension by going into the Filter Effects and choosing Inner Shadow.

2 The Inner Shadow settings are Blend Mode: Normal Opacity: 42 Blur: 33 (or there about) Distance: 7 Angle: 285 The Face Choose the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 260, Height: 220 Line Color: None Fill color: H-243,S-214,L-196, To give his face more colour, go to the Filter Effects and choose Inner Glow. Blend Mode: Normal Opacity: 32 Blur: 94 Click the teeny arrow next to the Colour and choose the red as shown in the sample. The Eyes Choose the QuickShape Moon - Width: 50, Height: 40, Moon Phase: 200. Line Color: None, Fill Color: black. Use the Pointer tool to select the eye and place it. Tilt the shape then Ctrl copy and place the copy eye remembering to tilt the other way as in the sample. The Eyebrows Choose the QuickShape Cloud - Width: 90, Height: 30. Line Color: None, Fill Color: White. Open the Filter Effects and choose the Inner Shadow. Blend Mode: Normal Opacity: 23 Blur: between 6 and 7 Distance: between 6 and 7 Angle: 296 Choose the Pointer tool and place the eyebrow tilting it the same way as the eye. Ctrl copy and drag and tilt and place the other eyebrow.

3 The Mouth Outside Select the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 60, Height: 80. Line Color: None, Fill Color: Black. Open the Filter Effects and check the Bevel and Emboss. Highlight: screen, Opacity: 66 Shadow: Multiply, Opacity 75 Blur: between 6 and 7 Depth: 229 Angle: 260 Elevation: 25 Style: Pillow Emboss Place the mouth in position over the beard. The Mouth Inside Select the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 50, Height: 50. Line Color: None, Fill Color: Black. Select the Fill tool. On the Context toolbar, set the Edit Fill to Linear. You will see the linear gradient applied from black to white over your shape. Click the white colour node and then click a red in the swatches. Place the inner mouth on top of the mouth with the Pointer tool. Turn it so the red is at the bottom and black is at the top, place the mouth in position as shown in this sample. The Cheeks Select the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 75, Height: 75. Line Color: None, Fill Color: H,234,S,152,L,141 Open the Filter Effects and check Blur. Blur Type: Gaussian Blur: Push the slider to maximum pt. Ctrl copy and place the rosy cheeks into position.

4 Santa s Moustache 1. Select the QuickShape Heart - Width: 275, Height: 160. Line Color: None, Fill Color: White. 2. Choose Flip Vertical on the Context toolbar to turn it upside down. Right click and choose Convert to Curves, then select the Node tool. 3. Hold down the Shift key and select the the upper left and the upper right nodes. Then click the Sharp Corners icon on the Context toolbar to convert the nodes to ones with sharp corners. 4. Click the top node and drag the handle down. Place it over the bottom node on the curved shape as shown in the sample. Then repeat the process for the other side. 5. Open the Filter Effects and check the Blur. Blur Type: Gaussian Blur: Then check Inner Shadow Opacity: 35 Blur: 3.75 Distance: 6 Angle: 270. Place on Santa s face. Santa s Bulbous Nose Select the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 120, Height: 100. Line Color: None, Fill Color: H-243,S-214,L-196, Open the Filter Effects and check Inner Glow. Blend mode: Normal Opacity: 50 Blur: 40 Colour: red Santa s Hat Select the QuickShape Rectangle - Width: 280, Height: 170. Line Color: None, Fill Color: Red (your choice of red). Place this shape over the face just above Santa s nose. Right click, Convert to Curves. Select the Node tool.

5 1. Grab and push the center line up and fit the two bottom nodes to the face. 2. Move the top left node in and up slightly (using the nose as a guide to center the line) 3. Grab and push left side line out to form a curve 4. Select Filter Effects and check 3D Effects. Move sliders to 45. The Fur Hat Brim 1. Select the QuickShape Rectangle - Width: 350, Height: 120. Line Color: White, Fill Color: White. 2. Right click and Convert to Curves. Move the rectangle over Santa s face. 3. Select the Node tool. Push the bottom edge up to show Santa s face. 4. Push the top edge up slightly to give a curved edge and move the bottom edges in to fit the side of Santa s face. 5. Make sure your line is activated (on top) in the Colours tab. 6. Go to the Line tab located in the right hand window. If it isn t showing go, View/Studio Tabs/Line Tab and click it. 7. Select the Brush from the Line tab and change the Line size to 40.0pt 8. Select the Brushes tab. If it is not showing in the right window go View/Studio Tabs /Brushes. 9. Select Global from the drop-down window. 10. Find the Fur-Fine brush. Click to apply it to your line. 11. Using the Pointer tool Ctrl copy and then make change the Fill color to None. This will make a softer fur trim.

6 The Hat PomPom 1. Select the QuickShape Ellipse - Width: 70, Height: 70. Line Color: White, Fill Color: White. 2. Open the Line tab and click on the paintbrush. change the line width to Open the Brush tab and choose Fur-Fine to apply the brush to your ellipse. 4. With the Pointer tool, Ctrl copy and make the fill color transparent. 5. Drag a box around the pompom and group. Then send this to the back and place it as shown in this sample or where ever it looks best to you.
