1 Quilt Pro 6 Lesson Quilt in a Quilt Quilt in a Quilt The Inner Quilt This quilt is a very complex design. We will cover a unique technique not covered in the manual. While any one can master the techniques we will cover, I think you will be surprised to see what Quilt-Pro can do. The flexibility of Quilt-Pro can amaze even the most advanced Quilt Pro user. Before we begin there are some labels used in the instructions for the different parts of the quilt we will be designing. I list these here to show the order in which we will be designing the quilt. Now we are ready to begin.

2 Design the Inner quilt layout. To begin designing the quilt, click the Quilt Wizard button, or click the Quilt menu and choose Quilt Wizard, or simply press Ctrl-Q keys on your keyboard. Make the following changes to the quilt settings: Layout Tab: 1. Layout Type: Straight 2. Block Placement: Alternate Size Tab: 1. Block Count: 5 across and 5 down. 2. Block Width: 4" Borders Tab: 1. Click either Add Border, or Delete Border so that this quilt has 2 borders. 2. Click the Current Border arrows until the border number shows in the box. Border 1: a. Border Type: Vertical Straight b. Horizontal Fitting and Vertical Fittings: Specific Count = 1, Width = 1". Border 2: a. Border Type: Horizontal Straight b. Horizontal Fitting and Vertical Fittings: Specific Count = 1, Width = 1" Sashes Tab: 1. Inner Sash box - unchecked (not enabled). Quilt Size = 24" square. Click the Finish button. Add Block to Inner Quilt: 1. Using the Block Library, locate the Simple Four Patch #2 block. It can be found in alphabetical order in the Block folder named Squares and Stripes. 2. Select the block and then the upper left block space in the quilt. The program will add the block to every other space for an Alternate Setting. 3. Paint as desired. See Illustration. Your quilt should look like the illustration. Save this as: Inner quilt.

3 Build the Triangle Block: 1. Now we will edit one of the blocks in the quilt, which should still be open. To do that, double click the Simple 4 Patch located on the top right corner of the quilt. A block window will open with a single block showing. 2. From the edit menu, choose select all. 3. From the Effects menu, choose Group. This will group the block so that we can select, move and duplicate the block without much effort. 4. Zoom out so that you can see the block and plenty of workspace. 5. Move the block so that the upper left hand corner of the block is at (4, 4) co-ordinates. That is 4" down and 4" across on the ruler. 1. Select the block and from the Edit menu, choose Duplicate. 2. Repeat the last step, so that you have 3 duplicate blocks on the screen. 3. Move the two new blocks into alternate setting as shown in the illustration. 4. Draw a Square in the middle of the three blocks, the same size as the 4 patch blocks. 5. Fill in the sides with Triangles, as shown in the illustration. 1. From the Edit menu, choose Select All. 2. Click the Rotate Left tool on the toolbar and select the 45 degree option. 3. Click the Rotate Left button again so that the Triangle block ends up at a 45 degree position from it's original position. Keep the block selected. 4. Click the Select tool on the toolbar and move the unit to the corner of the window. See the illustration. 1. Draw a triangle in the corner to complete the partial block. You'll notice that the little triangle didn't match up to the rest of the block. Not to worry, it will be corrected on the next page.

4 Build the Triangle Block: pg2 1. If the lines of the triangle do not touch the other parts of the block, select the Snap To Point tool on the toolbar, and then select the Reshape tool. In the "Reshape Options" select the "Move Point" option. 2. Then click the small triangle patch. Three black nodes will appear, one in each corner. Use the Zoom in tool to see the nodes clearer, if necessary. 3. Using the Node edit tool, "grab" a black node in the corner and drag it until it meets with the point of the other block. See illustration. 4. Repeat on the other edge of the triangle. Now the triangle should meet the rest of the block on both edges of the Triangle and the corner should be at the upper left side of the work area as illustrated. 1. Zoom out, if needed, to see the entire Triangle block. 2. Because we will need to duplicate this block later we will need to group this new block. From the Edit menu, choose Select All (ctrl-a) 3. From the Effects menu, choose Group. Now we can select, move and duplicate the block without much effort. 4. Save the block using the File menu- Save As" and name this block Triangle block. Why save it under a new name? You may want to open either the Simple Four Patch block or the Triangle block at another time to make changes.

5 Build the Full quilt. 1. Now we will move back to or reopen the Inner Quilt design. To reopen the design, click File Open Quilts, or use the Quilt Gallery sorted to My Quilts. If the design is still open, select the Inner Quilt, from the list at bottom of the Window menu. 2. With the Inner Quilt on screen, choose Select All from the Edit menu,. 3. Next choose Copy from the Edit menu. 4. Now we will move back to the block window, click the Triangle block name on the list at bottom of the Window menu. 5. With the Triangle block showing, choose Paste from the Edit menu. The quilt will paste into the block window as a block...it is no longer a quilt. 6. With the quilt selected from the paste function, go to the Effects menu and choose Group. This will group the "Quilt" block so that we can select and move it without much effort. 7. The quilt may have pasted over the triangle block, move the Quilt Block so that you can see both the Triangle block and the Quilt Block. See the illustration. 1. With only the Inner Quilt selected, choose the Rotate Left tool and set the rotate option to 45 degrees. 2. Click the Rotate Left button again so that the Inner Quilt block ends up at a 45 degree position from it's original position. Keep the block selected. 3. Click the Select tool on the toolbar, and move the Triangle block so that it lines up with the Quilt block at the top of the Quilt Block. Do not be concerned because the Triangle block does not fit along the entire side of the Quilt Block. It is not supposed to. It should line up with the inside portion of the Inner Quilt. See the positioning lines in the illustration. 1. Select the Triangle block, if not already selected. 2. From the Edit Menu, choose Duplicate. 3. Rotate the new Triangle block to the right, with the 90 Degree Rotate tool, and move the it into position on the other side of the Quilt block. 4. With one Triangle block selected, press and hold the shift key and select the other Triangle Block. Both are now selected. You can use the selection box o make sure both triangles are placed correctly. If you see a space on one side, move the right side to correct it and make sure they are on the same grid line. You may have to unselect the Snap to Grid to get it lined up.

6 1. With the two Triangle blocks selected, choose Duplicate from the Edit Menu. 2. Using the Flip Vertical tool, flip the two Triangle blocks and move into position along the bottom of the Quilt Block. Just as before, you can use the selection lines to make sure the bottom triangles line up. See Illustration. 1. Looking at the illustration in the previous section, do you see how the Triangle blocks on the right side of the Quilt Block are not facing in the correct direction? You can flip and rotate the Triangle blocks so that they are facing correctly. To do so, select the top right Triangle block, and click on the Flip Horizontal tool and then click the Rotate Right - 90 degrees tool. 2. Next select the bottom right Triangle block; then click on the Flip Horizontal tool and then click the Rotate Left 90 degrees tool. Now the quilt should look like the illustration on the left. 1. Save the block using File Menu...Save As and name it "Full Quilt" (without the quotes). Please note: This portion of the design is still a block even though we are calling it "Full Quilt." Do not close the block window after saving. 2. The Quilt Block still has corners that stick out beyond the newly created block. These corners must be removed. To do so, select the design and from the Effects menu select Ungroup. 3. Then zoom into the quilt so that you can see the corners better. 4. Select the Rotary Cutter tool from the toolbar and cut down across the corner to smooth out the quilt line. See the illustration. 5. Delete the cut corner patches. 6. Do the same to the other 3 sides of the quilt. 7. Save the design.

7 The Finished Quilt With the design unselected, choose Resize from the Effects menu. Make a note of the exact dimensions of this quilt block. My design is 31.03wX 31.32h. The size you find is the size you'll use in the Size tab below. For the purpose of this lesson, the size used will be 31.03wX 31.32h Now we will add the outside border. With the design on screen, click the Quilt Menu and choose Quilt Wizard. Layout Tab 1. Layout: Straight 2. Block Placement: Single Block Size Tab 1. Block Count: 1 across and 1 down. 2. If your design isn't exactly square, remove the check from "Keep Proportion". 3. Block Width: Height: Sashes Tab: Inner Sash box - unchecked (not enabled). Borders Tab 1. Click either Add Border or Delete Border so that this quilt has 1 border. 2. Border Type: Horizontal Straight 3. Horizontal Fitting and Vertical Repeat: Specific Count= 1, Width= 3". Click the OK button. Your quilt should look like the Illustration below. Paint as desired and save Quilt. Note: You can make this quilt in any size but you will need to be sure that block you use to build your Triangle block is the same size as the block used in the Inner quilt. The border for the inner quilt should be 1/2 the block size. For example, for a block size 8", the width of the 2 borders should total 4".
