3 1. Basic features of the device The BC-01 digital readout is a general-purpose device which processes signals from incremental encoders providing TTL and RS422 phase shifted A/B signals. Standard features: 6-digit LED display + sign height of the digits 14 mm counting dirrection setting absolute / incremental measurement scale mm / inch conversion radius / diameter measurement mirroring 1/2 value calculation resetting, presetting the initial measurement value encoder resolution setting decimal point setting possibility to lock any of the digital readout button reference point setting / customer reference point setting linear correction of the encoder slowdown points setting the device can be used e.g. when cutting an endless strip non-volatile memory 2. General information and application - The BC-01 is designed for linear and angular incremental encoders with TTL 5V or RS422 outputs. - Maximum input frequency is 650kHz. - The digital readout must not be exposed to cooling liquids, oil or chips. - The digital readout can be mounted at least 0.5m from high-voltage sources, power contactors etc. - The encoder cables must not be installed together with power cables of the machine. - The digital readout must not be exposed to mechanical shocks and vibrations. It can be mounted using the standard delivered holder or directly onto a holder using the throughhole of 6mm diameter. The holder must ensure required stability of the digital readout. Page 3

5 4. Digital readout setting (setup) - To enter into the setup, during power on press and hold a button (e.g. the ABS button) or buttons according to the required mode. The corresponding settup values appear on the display. - The last digit (on the right) is blinking = the constant is ready to edit. - Press the INC/ button to change value of the digit on the active position. - Press the ABS/ button to move the active (blinking) position to the left. - Press the MODE/ button to store the set value into the memory the LED flashes shortly. - After setting the constants switch the power off. - Wait for about 10 seconds, switch the device on and let it start the measurement mode. Meaning of the displayed digits in the setting mode: - 1 = function is active - 0 = function is blocked The following tables describe settings of the digital readout: 4.1 Constants, decimal point During power on press and hold the ABS button. The ABS LED is on. Displayed positions SIGN HALF DP4 DP2 DP1 Device constants Decimal point setting SIGN HALF XXX DP4 DP2 DP1 - counting direction selection (sign) - 1/2 value calculation (halving) - 4 decimal places on the display - 2 decimal places on the display - 1 decimal place on the display - When DP2 (value = 1) and DP1 (value = 1) are on, 3 decimal places are displayed. - HALF: the device provides ½ value calculation in the INCREMENTAL scale; press the INC button for a few seconds to activate the calculation. - SIGN: this parameter enables you to change direction of the measurement, e.g. when moving the sensor from left to right, the negative value increases. Using this parameter the positive value will be increasing. Page 5

6 4.2 Button locking, reference points setting During power on press and hold the MODE button. Displayed positions Button locking Sensor MODE ABS INC CLA Nip Nin MODE ABS INC CLA - 0 = MODE button locking - 0 = ABS button locking - 0 = INC button locking - 1 = fixed reference point activation Fixed reference point this reference point represents the zero point of the encoder. When moving over the reference point, the digital readout displays zero value. The Nip or Nin functions have to be active together with the CLA function. If the CLA function not active, but the Nip or Nin functions are activated, the movable reference point will be displayed. Nip and Nin - this reference point (coordinate value in a given point) is automatically referenced by the readout to the reference point, which is positioned on the encoder, and stored in memory. Thanks to this memorized reference point it is possible to return back to the original absolute scale of measurement after switching the power supply off and on again. In fact, the digital readout can be used as an absolute measurement system even if incremental encoders are used. Set either Nip = 1 (reference point signal changes from 0V to 5V) or Nin = 1 (reference point signal changes from 5V to 0V) to activate these reference points. The movable reference point is indicated by moving over the reference point of the encoder. 4.3 Time filter of the display During power on press and hold the ABS and MODE buttons. 7 The BC-01HS digital readout enables you to filter the displayed values (standard periode is 10ms). This function can be used e.g. when vibrations of a machine influence the displayed values. In such case the displayed value is not stable. Increase the display periode to suppress vibrations of the displaed values. 4.4 Digital readout resolution setting according to the connected encoder During power on press and hold the ABS and INC buttons. Digital readout resolution according to the connected encoder Value The coefficient can be set within the range Calculation of the coefficient for a linear encoder Coefficient = number of encoder pulses per 1mm / number of digital readout pulses per 1mm according to the selected resolution - Number of encoder pulses: depend on the encoder resolution: e.g. the sensor: TMLS-05A-02 = resolution 0.005mm TMLS-01A-02 = resolution 0.001mm KA-300 = resolution 0.005mm JCXE = resolution 0.001mm - Number of encoder pulses per 1mm = 1/encoder resolution - Number of digital readout display pulses: Number of digital readout pulses per 1 mm and display resolution 0.1mm = 10 pulses Number of digital readout pulses per 1 mm and display resolution 0.01mm = 100 pulses Number of digital readout pulses per 1 mm and display resolution 0.001mm = 1000 pulses Number of digital readout pulses per 1 mm and display resolution mm = pulses Example of calculation: Encoder resolution 0.005mm, display resolution mm Coefficient = number of encoder pulses per 1mm / number of digital readout pulses per 1mm according to the selected resolution Coefficient: 1mm/0.005 = / 1000 = 0,2 Encoder resolution 0.001mm, display resolution mm Coefficient = number of encoder pulses per 1mm / number of digital readout pulses per 1mm according to the selected resolution Coefficient: 1mm/0.001 = / 1000 = 1 Calculation of the coefficient for an angular encoder Coefficient = number of encoder pulses per 360 / number of digital readout pulses per 360 according to the selected resolution Number of digital readout pulses per 360 and display resolution 0.1 = 10 pulses Page 7

E.g. when using an angular encoder with 1024 pulses per revolution for 3mm length measurement, display resolution mm, the coefficient 1024 / 3000 = (+ linear correction) should be set. 4.5 Linear correction setting During power on press and hold the MODE, ABS and INC buttons. Linear correction setting Value Range of the linear correction setting is 0 ~ +/- 999 increments per m. NOTE: Length of the increment depends on resolution of the linear encoder (e.g. 1 increment of a 5-micron encoder is 5 microns). 5. Digital readout operation 5.1 MODE button - Press this button to confirm values entered in the setting mode or values entered in the absolute scale mode. 5.2 ABS button - Press this button shortly to select absolute scale of measurement (it is indicated by the LED indicator above the ABS button) - Press this button long to switch the digital readout to the mode of presetting a value of the absolute scale (this value is kept also after switching the device off) ABS button moves the active (blinking) position to the left INC button increases value of the digit on the active position (values 0 up to 9) MODE button confirms the set value and returns to the measurement mode 5.3 INC button - Press the button to clear the display and to select incremental scale of measurement (it is indicated by the LED indicator above the INC button) Page 8

9 - In case of repetitive clearing the incremental scale it is necessary to press the ABS button shortly to go back to the absolute scale mode and then to press the INC button again; zero value of the incremental scale appears on the display. - If the HALF function is active, press this button long to halve the displayed value. 6. Troubleshooting 6.1 Not able to switch the digital readout on Check the power inlet and the mains adapter. 6.2 Measured values are not correct 1) Check correct connection between the readout and the encoder. 2) Check if velocity of the movement is not too high. 3) Check correct installation of the encoder. 4) Check correct setting of the digital readout resolution. 5) Check correct setting of the correction factor.
