1 HESP-E-AO-PS Laboratory Diode Driver (For use with Kigre AO-1010 and AO-610 lasers) Kigre manufactures a laboratory laser diode driver for use with the AO-1010 and AO-610 actively Q-switched laser heads. The driver features precision pulsed current operation and supports the HESP family eye-safe laser diode requirements. A USB cable and software are provided so that the customer may use their computer as a laser controller. The driver accepts VAC, 50-60Hz AC Input for universal operation. The driver includes ultrahigh performance hold-up capacitors for stable pulsed current control up to 85 Amps. The driver features soft-start control, active current limiting, transient filtering, and a mechanical shorting relay provide robust protection for the laser. 2 KIGRE LASER CONTROL SOFTWARE Kigre laser control software provides a ready-made repetition rate generator with burst and shot count features. Use the cursor or keyboard to set the proper repetition rate for your laser. Use the cursor or keyboard to set the proper number of shots (burst count) for application. your Select START to begin firing the laser and STOP to stop firing the laser. You may stop firing the laser during a burst count-down at any time by pressing the stop button. The software provides a count-down of the remaining number of shots in the burst. The Kigre laser control software may be operated at any pulse repetition rate setting from 1 Hz to 10 Hz. Always set the current to the value specified by the laser test sheet and documentation. The HESP-E-AO-PS laser driver requires a computer for laser operation. Kigre does not supply a computer with the HESP-E-AO-PS laser driver. Printed: 3/16/15 Page 2 of 8 Revision # 1

The AC Inlet connector is a standard type (IEC 320-C14) often used by computers and other electronics equipment so you may be able to simply replace the cord to accommodate your country s AC outlet standard. If you prefer to attach a different AC plug on the existing cable: The black wire is AC-L1, the white wire is the AC-L2 (or neutral for 120VAC units) and the green wire is the Ground. 5 TYPICAL OPERATION Laser Armed Status (On = Armed) SET CURRENT DIAL = 80A FOR 80 AMP SETTING ON/OFF Power Switch External Fire Input BNC Laser Sync Output BNC The Laser Sync Output signal is a 5V, 2mS pulse with the rising edge synchronized with the actual laser output. The output is intended to drive a 1M-ohm (one mega-ohm) scope input. Never attempt to monitor this signal with a 50-ohm low impedance scope input. The External Fire Input requires a 5 volt (+/- 0.5V), mS pulse into the front panel BNC connector. Input resistance is 100K-ohm. The laser fire circuit is triggered on the rising edge of this input signal. Never exceed 10 Hz for the Kigre AO1010 laser. Printed: 3/16/15 Page 5 of 8 Revision # 1
6 ACOUSTO-OPTIC Q-SWITCH AND RF DRIVER INFORMATION Acousto-optic Q-Switches are special modulators designed for use inside laser cavities. They have exceptionally low insertion loss and are able to withstand very high laser powers. An RF signal is applied to the Q-Switch causing it to deflect a proportion of the laser beam. This increases the cavity losses and prevents lasing. When the RF signal is switched off, the cavity losses decrease rapidly and the high peakpower laser pulse is emitted. The Kigre laser uses a Gooch and Housego AO Q-switch, model # 330 The Kigre driver uses a Gooch and Housego 80MHz, RF driver, model # MQH080-60DM-FPS. Printed: 3/16/15 Page 6 of 8 Revision # 1
7 TIMING DIAGRAM FOR KIGRE AO-1010 AND AO-610 LASERS LASER OUTPUT PULSE: 10Hz, ~10mj, 6ns Pump current is turned off 100uS after RF is turned off. Output pulse occurs approximately 800nS after RF is turned off. Laser RF input is 50-ohm impedance (Acousto-Optic crystal) 60W RF is approximately 155Vpp. LASER CONTROL PROCEDURE: 1) Send 100A, 1.80mS current pulse to pump diodes in laser. Red wire = Anode (+); Black wire = Cathode (-) 2) Simultaneously send a 1.79mS pulse of 60W, 80MHz RF power to AO crystal in laser. Center of SMA connector = Positive (+); Shield = Negative (-); Use RG ohm coax. 3) Laser output pulse occurs approximately 800nS after the RF is turned off. 4) Repeat as needed.
