This presentation will contain photographs of third century buildings, 21st century buildings and scenes of in-between times. a number of very unusual 21st century buildings. A number of other typically Spanish photos will be shown. At the end of the presentation some details of the very minor post processing done on a few of the photos will be given. The presentation will conclude with a brief mention (supported by the last photo) of one of the current problems faced by Spain. The first group of photos will concentrate on some of the churches, royal buildings, and their contents. This group will conclude with a number of external photos of the Basilica of Gaudi in Barcelona, a most unusual structure indeed. 2 Dave Brown was introduced to photography some 50+ years ago by using his grandfather s bellows camera. He transitioned from film to digital in Since then Dave has pushed the limits of his equipment and software to create the image he had in mind when taking the shot. Questions And Answers: Erik Winter Bring any questions you may have about photography to the May 3rd meeting. This is a time to personalize your experience at the meeting, and get some answers to some of those photography questions that have been puzzling you for some time. The opera house of Valencia. It is the largest in Europe and the centerpiece of a collection of several very modern buildings in Valencia. It s official name is el Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía by Alex Burr The entrance to the audience room of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain by Alex Burr Pinos Altos Field Trip By Anne Chase On Saturday, May 14, Anne Chase will lead the third Field Trip in the Ghost Town series. This time we will go to Pinos Altos. It is about 122 miles and 2 hour 15 minutes from Las Cruces. Additional information will be given at the May 3rd meeting. For more information, contact Anne Chase at achase202@gmail.com. A common street scene, here in Valencia. Most cities have some streets that are lined with vendors of one type or another.by Alex Burr Lighting Solutions By Dave Brown In a presentation on May 3rd Dave will go through the lighting setup and editing process that he used to create the three images included in the newsletter. The presentation will not be going into excruciating how-to detail, but should provide enough information for people to try. A Brief History of Pinos Altos: As many towns did in southern New Mexico, Pinos Altos began as a mining town. In 1860, three 49er s stopped in Bear Creek for a drink and discovered gold. In no time there were 700 miners, leading to conflict with each other, as well as with the Apache Indians. Roy Bean operated a mercantile here in the 1860 s before moving to West Texas to gain fame as Segmented Bowl by Dave Brown 2

3 Leopardwood Snare Drum by Dave Brown Judge Roy Bean, The Law of the Pecos. Pinos Altos is Spanish for tall pines. The town is located along the Continental Divide at an elevation of 7,000 feet in the southern end of the Pinos Altos Mountains in what is now the Gila National Forest. It is 5-10 miles north of Silver City. The 2010 census listed 198 residents. Many of the buildings were built in the late 1800 s and a number have been restored. Today: Pinos Altos never became a true ghost town, but many of the original buildings have been re-purposed. A log cabin built in 1866, which once served as a schoolhouse, is now the Pinos Altos Museum. The Gold Avenue Methodist Church, built with the help of Mrs. George Hearst (mother of William Randolph Hearst) is now an art gallery and called the Hearst Church. The Hearst interests were sold in 1903 and the town s fortunes declined. DAPC QUARTERLY PRINT CONTEST All Doña Ana Photography Club Members may bring up to 3 prints to the May 17th, and August 16th meetings for our Sculpted Rocking Chair by Dave Brown friendly little contest. The prints will be judged during thae first half of the meeting and discussed during the second half, with the emphasis being to learn how to make a great photograph. This will be an excellent opportunity to prepare for our Photo of the Year competition in November. Since even a friendly little contest needs rules, here are ours: Entries must be prints with the image no larger than 8.5 x 11. The title of the photo and your name must be on the back of the entry. No information may be on the front. You may submit up to 3 photos that have not been awarded a ribbon in any prior print contest or Photo of the Year competition. (But all entries and ribbon winners in print contests will be eligible for the Photo of the Year competition.) Approximately one-third of the entries submitted will receive either a red or a blue ribbon. There are no classes or categories all entries compete equally. All entries will also count toward our Photographer of the Year award. To enter, you must be a paid-up Doña Ana Photography Club member. You may pay your dues at any club event, just before submitting your entry, or online at DAPhoto- Club.org. Entries are to be brought to the club meeting on the date of the competition from 6 pm to 7 pm, and picked up at the end of the meeting. You should be present to learn from this experience; but if you can t be, have someone else bring and pick up your entries. By submitting an entry, you consent to it being used for Club publicity. Judging will be completed by the membership present at the meeting by popular vote. Critique on selected images will Historic Museum Images from Google Images Pinos Altos Opera House Images from Google Images 3

4 be performed by various club members and will always be directed towards constructive commentary. Remember everyone sees things differently. You might not agree with the judges, but please respect the their decisions. Finding flowering cactus specimens in the wild is a great experience. Lisa s current cactus photo collection took many years to compile, was great fun to do, and is still a work in progress. Besides showcasing nature photography, this talk will help with the identification of individual members of the cactus clan. There will be information on the unique adaptations that have enabled cacti to live and thrive in arid lands. Hopefully, the cactus chronicles will help to expand the appreciation of the native flora of the Chihuahuan Desert. Lisa Mandelkern is a naturalist and Chihuahuan Desert enthusiast. She is an award-winning photographer, and loves to document wild Southern New Mexico. Hearst Church Images from Google Images Cactus Chronicles By Lisa Mandelkern DAPC member Lisa Mandelkern will give one of SWEC s Tuesday Talks titled Cactus Chronicles The Joy Of Finding, Identifying And Photographing Cacti In The Las Cruces Area on May 10, 2016, 7:00 PM at SWEC. From claret cups to prickly pears-there are more than 30 different species of cacti in the desert near Las Cruces. Many of these native cacti are small plants, easily overlooked, but all beg to be observed. 5 THE LIGHT NEVER LIES WAYNE SUGGS EXHIBIT The Light Never Lies: Landscape & Astrophotography of Wayne Suggs is on display at the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road. Living in the Southwest is a paradise for a landscape photographer like Las Crucen Wayne Suggs. He was introduced to the wonders of nature at an early age by parents who knew the importance of having a relationship with the great outdoors. The exhibit, which features 30 of his photographs, will be on display through July A self portrait by Wayne Suggs Boot Camp Image Critique By Rob Peinert On Saturday, May 21, 2016, the final part of the five-part photography boot camp will take place at the Southwest Environmental Center, 275 N. Downtown Mall, Las Cruces from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This class will be a question and answer session, along with the opportunity to have your images critiqued by members of the Doña Ana Photography Club. This is YOUR time to ask any questions about photography. We hope you ve been out learning your cameras, taking pictures, trying new things, different modes, etc. Now is the time to come back and ask questions about issues you may have come across. Whether you need more explanation about topics covered during the boot camp, have questions about a certain techniques or gear, need more information about RAW vs. JPEG, etc., this is your time to ask. Please don t hesitant to ask any questions, chances are high that others have similar questions and this is a learning experience for all. The best way to learn and improve your photography skill is to practice and ask questions. Hedgehog at Sunset in Spring by Wayne Suggs Also during this class, there will be time for some image critiques. We will have members from the Doña Ana Photography Club to review your images with you individually and give you some feedback. Please prepare 3-5 images that you would like to have critiqued and bring them on a USB thumb drive; if you do not have access to a USB thumb drive, please contact Rob Peinert at education@ daphotoclub.org. This class is free for Doña Ana Photography Club members; non-club members may attend the class for $5.00. Visit to register. Feel free to contact Rob Peinert at education@daphotoclub.org with any questions. RAW OR JPEG PRESENTATION CANCELLED Due to a family emergency, the presentation scheduled on the Pros and Cons of Photographing in RAW Mode or JPEG Mode on May 17th has been cancelled. 5

6 Follow The Dapc Cabinet Building Project DAPC members are in the process of building a new cabinet for the clubs AV equipment. Dave Brown has a woodworking blog where he goes through methods and processes posting weekly updates while building various woodworking projects. He will be adding posts while building the club s cabinet. You may be interested in following the process at Dave s blog: May Theme Night Photography By Eileen Vanwie The hints for night photography are intended for beginners. Whether you want to shoot the moon, paint with light, or use the right camera settings, here are a few suggestions. For the best night photos, shoot in RAW. Using a sturdy tripod is essential for some subjects. If you are without a tripod, adjust your posture with your elbows tightly into your sides and the camera strap wrapped tightly around your wrist. Cup one hand just under the lens and with the other hand, brace the side of the camera. If there is something solid near you, like a wall or post, brace yourself against it. Select locations for the photos in advance by scouting the best spots for the most interesting lights, architecture, or other subjects, for the safest position, and for the best times of day/ night. Use the middle range of apertures for your lens (f/8 to f/16). A narrow aperture (about f/16) will give depth of field so that shots are sharp and will give sparkle to streetlights. Study the scene for composition at night. Getting closer to the subject or using the zoom feature may be helpful. Lastly, use the camera s built-in self-timer to trigger the shutter after you ve pressed it to avoid unwanted movement. mm lens. If your lens does not close to the suggested aperture, leave the shutter speed at 20 sec, but increase the ISO accordingly. Take the UV filter off at night if you are using one. Camera settings/recipes are never written in stone, they are meant to be springboards for photography. Each camera/lens works a little differently, so adjustments are inevitable. Give Night Photography a try. It takes practice and patience but the results can be spectacular. Ask the folks on Wayne Suggs Astro Photography April photo field trip! Send up to three night photos (high-quality JPEG image files and try to keep their size below 2 MB; additionally, maximum size should be 1920 x 1080 pixels) to themes@daphotoclub. org by Saturday, May 14th. A slideshow with the theme of night photos will be shown at our meeting on May 17, There are many night photography themes that can be explored. The talk A Shot in the Dark - Tips for Night Photography by Lisa Mandelkern is still on DAPC s web site at and it covers many ideas for night photography. Members should check out this PDF! Reference: Lisa Mandelkern shared an idea with me and I want to pass it on -- try photographing moonlit landscapes (ex. off Baylor Canyon Road). Try these settings: New moon (no moon), f/1.4, 20 sec, ISO 2000, 24mm lens Waxing, crescent, about 35% moon: f/2, 20 sec, ISO 1600, 24 Albuquerque by Jim Rodgers 6
