We can help with both, and more! Film, Television and Photography Here the cyc typically refers to an infinity cyclorama, or a wall which curves smoothly at the bottom to meet the studio floor. This creates the illusion that the studio floor continues to infinity with careful lighting and a corner less joint. Often used in conjunction with green screen technology, the cyc can equally refer to any curving backdrop such as seamless paper or fabric from rollers or stands. Studio Cycs STM studio supplies will supply and install from any radius including standard 40º-45º or 5-600mm to as small as 300 and as large as 1200mm. Combined with back out curtains, track, acoustic enhancement and overhead lighting rigs this can be a complete sound stage fitout for in house corporate or large scale movie studios. Fully supported STM studio cycs are impervious to breaking under reasonable load and are guaranteed to this effect. 2 Seamless Cloth and Paper Rollers Wall fixed brackets, such as these pictured, allows seamless paper to be draped and create the curve of a cyc. A similar result can be achieved with Holland blind mechanisms and fabric. Theatre Cyc A cyclorama is a large curtain or wall, often concave, positioned at the back of the stage. as the name implies, it often encircles or partially encloses the stage to form a background. Cycloramas allow virtual interaction between live stage performers and special lighting effects. Traditionally a cyc is hung at 0% fullness, i.e. flat. When possible, it is stretched on the sides and weighted on the bottom to create a flat and even surface. As seams tend to interrupt the smooth surface of the cyclorama, it is usually constructed from extra-wide material. 3 A cyc can be made of various fabrics; Filled Cloth, Sharkstooth Scrim, Nessel, each offer their own particular advantages. White Nessel canvas, Filled Cloth or Sharks Tooth Scrim. Filled cloth is a soft, crease resistant cotton fabric most commonly used for cycloramas. Filled cloth is so called because it is literally gauze with the holes filled in. Whilst normally used for cycs, it can also be used for front and rear projection screens 10 point-white-available in 9.4 metres wide 220 gsm Flame retardant to AS1530 Parts 2 & 3 (NDFR*) Scrims both reflect and transmit light. This means that if a light from a front-of-house position is shone at a scrim, then both the scrim and everything behind it will be lit. This can lead to a variety of interesting effects: A scrim will appear entirely opaque if everything behind it is unlit and the scrim itself is grazed by light from the sides or from above. A scrim will appear nearly transparent if a scene behind it is lit but there is no light on the scrim. A dreamy or foggy look can be achieved by lighting a scene entirely behind a scrim. If a light with a 1 gobo is aimed at a scrim, the image will appear on the scrim, but also any objects behind the scrim will be lit by the pattern as well. In general, anything that is lit will be seen on both sides of a scrim: scrims do not absorb light. Scrims can also be used in theatre in combination with a true cyclorama or backdrop. When the drop is lit, or images or video are rear-projected onto the back of the drop, the images or colours projected are visible. However, when the drop is not lit, the images or colours will disappear. A scrim can also help dull the image, creating a greater sense of depth. Another effect is caused by layering two scrims, or even by placing a mirror behind a scrim and lighting it: the familiar 2 moire effect. This can often cause audience disorientation. 4 White Nessel Canvas is bleached fire retardant canvas that suitable for manufacturing cycloramas and photographic backdrops. The available sizes make for less wastage than a filled cloth but do not store away as well and are better suited to a permanent installation. Scenic digital backdrops can be seamed or seamless, and the image can be printed onto a single, seamless piece of material or can be broken up and printed onto numerous seamed pieces of material. Vinyl backdrops are inherently flame retardant, but fabric options will need to be protected with a chemical application 3 NDFR means fabric that has been treated with flame retardant chemicals. These chemicals, however, can be removed or their efficacy reduced by washing or wetting the fabric. >> Page 4 of 5

This allows for one, stationary drop to render a daytime image when lit solely from the front, a nighttime image when lit solely from the back, and dusk/dawn effects when a mix of front and rear lighting is employed. Because the image printed on the nighttime side of the drop is an actual photograph, the backdrop will reveal all of the realistic variances of colour and colour temperature seen in a nighttime vista, yielding an ultrarealistic backdrop for filmmakers and stage designers alike.
