2 Drama Studio Lighting Rig - This is the structure which lanterns (lights) and other items are suspended from. In our Drama studio it is split into 9 squares. You can also see the 5 pin plug sockets for the lanterns. These are all numbered so that you know which light is plugged into what channel in the patch bay. Lighting Rig Lantern Lantern - Lights are referred to as lanterns. There are many different types. The main ones you will find in our drama studio are Fresnels, Par Cans, Profile spotlights and Moving lights. Projector - This is used to project images onto the screen. This could be video footage, still photos or presentations. Book Flats - These are used to provide performers with a backstage area and provide a backdrop for the set. They are large canvases which can be painted or projected onto. They are called book flats because they look like open books. Book Flats Projector Stage Blocks Stage Blocks - These are used to create raised areas on the stage. There are two different heights, 25 cm and 50 cm. They are 1 metre square and can be built up in blocks. These can be used to create levels in performance to show the character s status.

3 Lighting desk - This is used to control the intensity (brightness) of the lanterns on the rig and on stage. Sound desk - This is used to control the volume of any sound which is played in the drama studio. This includes sound from CD player, DVD player, Laptops, PCs, Macs, ipods, mics and instruments. DVD Player CD Player - This is used to play and mix CDs Graphic Equalizer - This is used to enhance or reduce the treble and bass in the sound being played. DVD Player - This is used to play DVDs. The footage will be shown on the projector in the Drama studio Lighting desk Sound desk Graphic Equalizer CD Player Lighting & Sound Control Room

4 Novation Launchpad The Novation Launchpad is used to trigger sounds that have been set up in Ableton music software. These could be loops of music to create an atmosphere or it could be a sound effect known as FX. Any number of sounds can be selected in a row but only one sound can be selected in a column. The arrows on the right will trigger all of the sounds within than row. Sound Desk The sound desk is used to control the sound being sent from an external device or instrument such as a CD Player or microphone. Each column of controls are repeated so that you can input several devices and instruments. These controls include volume, tone and gain.

5 The Lighting desk (below) is used to control the brightness of the lanterns. Each of the coloured slides can be used to control one or two of the lanterns depending on which channel they are patched into on the patch bay (right). For example if lanterns on channels 15 and 36 are patched into number 2 on the patch bay all you would need to do is push the second slider up on the lighting desk to make those lanterns light up the stage. There are red and yellow sliders which do the same function as the one above or below, allowing you to set up the next lighting state without changing what we see on stage. The master is in the top right and this controls all of the lanterns in one go. Lighting Desk

6 The different types of lanterns clockwise from the right are Par Can (this one has a red gel on it making the light red), Profile spotlight, Fresnel (this one has barn doors to restrict the spread of light) and moving lights. Par Cans and Fresnels are use for general washes of light where as Profile spotlights can be focused into a smaller area. All of these can be fitted with gels or barn doors. They can also be fitted with gobos allowing you to project an image such as lines to suggest light passing though window blinds. The moving lights have gels and gobos within its casing and these lanterns are also able to move. These are controlled though software called mydmx, not the lighting desk. Lanterns

7 Stage Blocks and LEDs These stage blocks can be set up to represent a number of places or simply to give status to somebody or something. There are 250mm and 500mm stands with 1m sq surfaces. They can be built up like Lego, however always make sure they are sturdy before standing on them, don t run or jump on them or build them more than shoulder height or more than is comfortable. There are also LEDs on lighting stands which can be used to direct light from behind flats, from the side of the stage, from behind the audience or towards to audience. They will not get hot unlike other lanterns and can be controlled using mydmx. They have colours but you cannot control the brightness.
