12 Gerber Format A file format that contains a design's graphical data. Standard ASCII Format Used for data exchanged between CAD- (development) and CAM- (Fabrication) Tools Contains information about the apertures (DE: Blenden) and their coordinates for the different polygons (lines, shapes,..) Each gerber file contains only one layer Two different standard Formats: - Standard RS-274-D (D-Codes Table is separate and hasn t a specified format) - Extended RS-274-X

13 Gerber Format D-Code Each Aperture which is used for the photoplotter is stored in the apertrue list The aperture list cross-references the aperture number with a D-code of the desired shape and size. Each aperture is assigned a number (which represented its position on the wheel) D- Code 0-10 are special D-codes The aperture List can have different formats, depending on the CAD Tool

14 Gerber Format D-Code Example: When importing standard Gerber Format RS-274-D, you ve to import the aperture list. Otherwise use extended Gerber Format RS-274-X.

15 Gerber Format Extended RS-274-X contains the format Example: X19485 could mean inches, inches, or inches

16 Gerber Format Drill File For some operations it is necessary to have the drill file. Drill file can be imported Sometimes only a drill layer in GerberFormat is available. You can automatically convert this layer to an NC Drill layer and create the accompanying tool list.

18 Import Data Important to know: After importing Gerber files to VisualCAM, the data is stored in its own internal database format. When editing the data, you re not manipulating you re original files.

19 Import Data To Import Data always use the Import Wizard. File->Import->Import Wizard Chose the path where your data are stored.

30 FlowCAD Analysis The VisualCAM Analysis functions are used to find any flaws in your design prior to manufacturing. Using rules that you specify, the system analyzes your design, finds errors, and determines the best fix for those errors. You can then review the errors in the workspace, print error reports, fix the errors yourself or have the system fix the errors for you.

31 FlowCAD Analysis Preliminary Steps Import your data Each Layer has to be tagged with the correct Layer type Remove any extraneous data on your electrical layers that are outside the perimeter of the board, such as title blocks, etc. We recommend that any documentation for the board be done on a separate Drawing layer If you have any drawn pads in your database, select one of the Tools Convert Drawn Pads commands to convert them to flashes.

32 Analysis The example below shows the difference between a typical drawn pad and a comparable flash.

33 FlowCAD Analysis Preliminary Steps Align Layers if they are misaligned Edit Align Layers command Remove redundant pads Tools Pad Removal Stacked command You need a valid Netlist Import or create one Select the Analysis DRC/MRC command and run your analysis. After performing the analysis, VisualCAM automatically displays the errors in the Navigator, which you may use to view and automatically fix the errors.

35 FlowCAD Analysis - Information Min Air Gap Reports the shortest distance between any two items in the design. Conductive Layer Count Reports the total number of conductive layers. Board Size Reports the extents of the Border layer, if one exists. Otherwise the extents of the conductive layers is reported (drawing and other graphical layers are ignored)... Analysis to get general Information.

37 Analysis - DFF Acid Traps: Area where etching solution accumulates during manufacturing -> over-etching Copper Slivers: This are cupper areas which are so narrow that they will likely flake off Resist Slivers: Same as Copper Sliver but on resist area Isolated Thermals: Over-etching can isolate thermals (on negative plane) Starved Thermals: Check the number of thermal ties (on negative plane)
