3 OVERVIEW OF QATAR NEW PORT PROJECT Background: On 19 th June 2007, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thanir, Emir of the State, issued a decree to instigate one of the world s largest port developments. Strategically located south of Doha. The QAR 27 billion (US$7.4 billion) mega project includes a new port, a new base for the Qatar Emir Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3. The new project will span across 26.5 square kilometer, approximately 289 football fields. The new port will include world-class cargo and container terminals, cargo handling systems and in due course rail handling facilities. Developed as a modern, efficient and cost competitive commercial port and equipped with state-of-the art technologies, the new port is envisioned to become the preferred destination for the international shipping and maritime industry. The project commenced in 2008 and the first phase is expect ed to be completed by Under phase 1, eight ship to shore cranes will be delivered before the commencem ent of commercial operations in February 2016 and another four will be procured within 24 months of the first order. Twenty six rubber-tyred gantry cranes will also be in placed by February 2016 with another 12 to follow. - Correct as at 24 November 2015 References: 1. 7 ASSESSED CONTAINER TERMINAL 1 4 x Container Cranes 8 x Rubber Gantry Cranes MV Zhen Hua 10 Kompsat-2 Imagery Date of Image: 02 August 2015 Reference: Dohan News Observations: It was reported by Doha News that the Qatar New Port Project welcomed her first ship, the heav y load carrier Merchant Vessel (MV) Zhen Hua 10 on the 19 th July The vessel was carrying 4 container cranes and 8 rubber gantry cranes which will installed onto the port. As of 2 nd August 2015, it is assessed that the vessel MV Zhen Hua 10 was still present at the port.
