2 About the Front Cover: This month s cover has a great example of a historical image, which is the theme of this month s competition. Harold Jacobsohn s image earned an Honorable Mention award in this year s Stereoscopic Society of America print exhibition. Harold gives these details about his image The Smoke of War : The image was originally part of a 12 stereocard series in color that won the Tex Treadwell award about ten years ago. This image was converted to monochrome in StereoPhoto Maker. The scene was photographed at a Civil War battle reenactment at the Wade House in southern Wisconsin. The rig I used at that time was was twin Sony P 200 cameras with sync cable. Have not used this setup since the W3 became available. 2 Competition Standings thru September st 15 pts. From the Desk of the Editor: The judging of the Detroit International Stereo Exhibition will be held October 8th at our regular meeting place in Livonia. The results will be shown at our November meeting due to the late date of the judging, but our program for October will include the showing of ALL of the accepted images from the Ohio Exhibition. Come see some of the world s finest stereo digital images at both meetings. These meetings are a good way to introduce your friends and fellow photographers to the world of projected 3D images. The DISE program includes both slides and digitally captured images, while the Ohio program is all digital. George Themelis, who was one of the judges of the Ohio images, will be here to present his workshop Stereo Composition - Part 2. Don t miss it! 3 SPM Quick Tip - How To Save EXIF Information - and Why by Dennis Green Exif data is the information in a digital photo about how the image was taken. Right click on any image file, go to the bottom and select properties. You will find a long list of details, which includes the date taken, the camera used, all of the settings, and a lot of other details. These screenshots show just part of the list for an image out of the camera, and for one manipulated and saved under another title. The information can be lost. Then after you open an image, click on file > one of the Save options, then in the dialog box that opens up, check the box in front of Add thumbnail image to Save file. You only have to do this once, and SPM will continue to keep your original image metadata. Original image file Resaved image file Linda Nygren shared information on how to keep this information in modified files so you can get all the details about the final image in the future. When you first run the SPM program, there are a few things in the preference settings that are important. First, you want to make sure that SPM keeps your original image metadata, such as time and date of capture and camera ID and settings. To do this, go to *Edit *> *Preferences*, and near the bottom check the box for When add thumbnail image to Save file, copy original exif to Save file. 4 If you do NOT do this, then each new edited file will be treated as if it were created on the day of editing and the details of the original capture (EXIF data) will be lost. While you are in that Save dialog, you can also choose the jpg quality which will be remembered until you change it. The default is 70 or 80, but most users prefer to set this at maximum while editing, which is 99 for SPM. It is mostly a concern if you might be saving your images more than once, and wish to avoid the adverse effects of repeated jpg compression. [ ][ ] 5

4 VKWorld S2 Glasses-free Display by Dennis Green, edited from Photo-3D There has been a lot of favorable discussion recently about the new VKWorld S2 phone on Photo-3D and other Yahoo Group lists. This has become one of the more popular ways for people to view and share 3D images with friends. For those not familiar with it, the VKworld S2 is an Android phone with a display size of 5.5" (which qualifies it to be called a "phablet"). This is the same size as an iphone 6 plus, although the overall length and width of the S2 are a little smaller. The display is an excellent quality auto-stereoscopic 3D display. Unlike the older HTC EVO-3D, it has only a 2D camera, but a larger and higher resolution 3D display, more modern processor etc. The HTC EVO-3D had a pair of 5 megapixel cameras, which were fine for the 4.3 inch 960 X 540 display, but the VKWorld has a 13 megapixel camera and a display of 1280 X 720 pixels, which looks great on the small screen. The S2 comes with the Android 5.1 (Lollipop) operating system. It can be used independently or on WI-FI right out of the box, or optionally can be used as a phone. If you want to do this and AT&T plans are too pricey for you, you could consider Cricket wireless or others. The VKWorld S2 comes with TriDef software included, which will display MPO or JPEG images easily. It has 16 GB of internal storage, plus it can take a micro SD card that will hold up to an additional 32 GB of data. The software will display either still images or videos. The phone can be purchase from ebay or Amazon.com at prices ranging from $198 - $230. 3D Steroid Pro for Android Phones Details from the Google Play Store 3DSteroid Pro is a stereoscopic application for Android phones. This 3D app, created by Masuji Suto of StereoPhoto Maker fame, has many of the features of SPM that make that program so popular for 3D digital images. With this app you can do the following: - Auto-Align L/R images - Save images in High resolution - Do Multi-conversion to other formats - Input file : Independent L/R, SBS JPEG or MPO format - Display method : 3D SBS, Mirror, Wiggle, Anaglyph or 2D - Save the displayed image and send the saved file by . - Display a Slide Show, either timed or advance with the volume button (great for viewing in a View-Vaster) - Take L/R pictures with the internal camera and save as 3D. - Adjust L/R image positions and rotation error. - etc. The app is available for a mere $2.90 in the Google Play Store. A free version is also available with fewer features. 6 7

5 Award Winners from September: Single Projector Stereo: How It Works by Dennis Green When our club started projecting stereo digital images, it was done with a pair of 2D projectors, each using its own linear polarizing filter in front of the lens. This system was similar to projecting stereo slides using twin 2X2 slide projectors, or even projecting a stereo slide with a stereo projector having 2 lenses. But how are we now able to project stereo images using a single projector that has only 1 lens? Blooming Flower - George Themelis - 1st Place The key pieces of equipment are a projector that alternates left and right images, and a polarization modulator (changer) that twists the light coming out of the projector to be aligned first 45 degrees to the left, then to the right. This allows our new circularly polarized passive 3D glasses to see all the left images with the left eye only, and the right images with the right eye.
