~ THE ENTRANCE CAMERA CLUB DIGITAL IMAGE COMPETITION RESULTS ~ FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE 2017 MAKE IT MONO Judge: MARTIN REGAN Image Comment I like how the way the photographer has framed this image. We see the old tree with its exposed roots and large branch wrapping around the old building. The speckled lighting through the trees brightens areas that would be large area of darkness. This image works really well as monochrome. H/C Award 1 The old abandoned farm house has seen better days, now we see areas of the house falling apart. The photographer has come in close on the house to ensure it is there are no distractions as we look around the shot, plus framing the shot so the decayed branch puts a boundary on the foreground. I like the vignetting and darkened sky which focuses our attention on house. 2

The power of nature is seen here as the water appears to come out of the rock and cascade down the rock face as it plummets to the bottom. I feel this has been emphasised by taking the shot as a vertical so our eyes are drawn into the lighter area of the shot being the waterfall. 3 A great portrait of the male. The face of the old gentleman is very sharp emphasising the wrinkles and a great smile to show the not so great teeth (a dentist s nightmare ). The hat really adds character to the shot with the holes in the front and how it has moulded itself to his head. It must be his favourite. The photographer has made sure that both eyes are visible when taking the shot and coming in close gets rid of any distractions in the background. H/C Award 4

In this image the photographer has shown enough of the racket, the jig and the man to understand what is happening. From this we can see how they re-string a racket. We don't need to see the whole person in the shot. There is Good lighting on the subject and the background is muted to avoid distractions. 5 The photographer has created a very pleasant triptych showing different shots of the young lady. Each shot is emphasising the length of the ladies hair and her beauty. It appears that they were not posed shot. The depth of field is shallow enough so the background is out of focus. 6 It is good to see an underwater image. We don t see many of them in competitions. We see an old military plane that has crashed and sea is slowly consuming it. I think the inclusion of the diver in the background and the graininess adds to the shot. 7

A great shot of the bird. Lighting is even all over the bird and the feathers are pin sharp and waiting until the bird has turned its head toward you has ensured we see a profile of its head and the catch light in its eye. The background is dark along with the post so the bird stands out. 8 A great silhouette of the two children playing on the beach. The angle the photographer has taken the shot parallel to the waves looking up the beach creates a lot of interest in the image. We have the waves coming in from the left and the light reflecting on the wet sand and having the two people in the background strolling along the beach really makes the shot come together. H/C Award 9 We see a corner store which appears to still be in use. The building is in good condition along with the signs. Creating the shot as a sepia tone helps to give the feeling of an old fashioned shot. I feel the vignetting is a bit strong and could be softened so the edges aren't so strong. 10

I like the panorama view of this shot and the placement of the trees to the left in the shot. The sun was at the right angle to light up the water so the trees stood out in the water. Exposure is we handled over the scene. 11 A good candid shot of the man dresses up as the Town crier. There is direct eye contact with the photographer. We also see one of the activities of the Town crier is to ring the bell and here the bell is nicely positioned at the peak of the swing and a pleasant smile on the gentleman. Coming in close the photographer has removed most of the ironwork at the top of the image. 12 In this image the photographer has come in close and captured a very natural look of the child in the water. The vignetting on the sides has aided in our attention on the child's face. We also see water droplets coming down his face. A good shot. 13

By shooting from above the Tassie Devil he feels threatened resulting in the animal bearing his rather sharp teeth showing its ferocity. Having the depth of field shallow it adds to the impact of the animal s teeth. 14 A very picturesque shot of the countryside with the low lying clouds. There also appears to be a painterly effect added over the scene which has added some interest. The threatening sky and shadows gives impact to the scene. 15 I like how the effect photographer has achieved in this image. The three images of the ballerina show the movement as they dance whereas the ballerina in the foreground has been caught in a stationary position. Very well put together. 16

The post processing on this shot I feel has added something extra to the shot. The clothing appears to be Mexican by the big hat and shirt. I think the dark background works well in this shot. 17 The dog is totally focused on running after the ball and the photographer has pressed the shutter just at the right time when the ball is level with the dog's head. Taking the shot as a vertical allows the dog to space to run into the space in the foreground. The dog is sharp and having a subtle vignette around the image works well. H/C Award 18

A good attempt at photographing the birds. It can be tricky when you a photographing several birds. The birds are sharp but you took the shot just a fraction too late as they have crossed over each other and one foot is just covering the other's head. A bit of separation between birds would have helped to improve the shot. 19 It is a pity there is a strong shadow across the head and neck of the bird. The shadow is a distraction but the photographer has done the best from a difficult situation. There is good detail in the feathers and head. Possibly cropping the image to concentrate on the head would have improved the image. 20 This image works well as a monochrome as it removes the colour distraction that would be evident. It allows the viewer to look around the shot without the competition of colour. The hut, jetty and boat are framed just to the right allowing the house and smaller building to peek through in the background. Exposure is well handled over the whole image. 21

A very interesting shot of the camel train moving across the sand as it moves from a dark area into the lit area of the shot. The dark threatening clouds give impact to the image. I flipped the image horizontally so the camels were moving from left to right and think this looked more natural as we read from left to right in the western world. H/C Award 22 A great side profile shot of the young kangaroo. The roo is sharp and stands out from the background due to the shallow depth of field. The exposure is well handled which give good detail in the roo s fur. His eye is defined well enough considering the fur around the eye is also dark. H/C Award 23

We see in this image an old vehicle that has not moved for several years going by the overgrown brush in the foreground. I think the image could be improved slightly by parting the brush to enable the viewer to see more of the wheel and wooden rim. Unfortunately it is hidden just a bit too much. 24 There is good interaction between the animal and child. The viewer's eyes goes straight to the feeding of the animal. Getting in close and cropping out most of the body of the child and other animals has concentrated the attention of the viewer on the animal feeding. 25

A good use of lighting to produce a rim effect on models figure and on the chiffon as the model appears to move it. The background is dark so the model is emphasised. I like the pose and use of the chiffon. 26

A good use of angles and lines in this image where the photographer has emphasised the strong horizontal and vertical lines by getting in close at the base of the building and shooting upwards. By leaving enough space at the top for the white clouds if feel has added strength to the building. 27 In this image we see the two fishing boat that appear to be anchored in the bay virtually alongside each other. With all the rigging and masts on both boats it has made it a fairly busy image. Possibly having only one boat would be more pleasing but you had no control over this. 28 A very creative image with the air force planes flying over the rocky mountains and a large planet in the background. I am not sure what the significance of the ring around planet is, I am possibly missing something. Maybe making the rock face on the left slightly smaller might have made it a bit more realistic, but overall a good shot.

29 A good attempt at photographing the bird. Here the bird is a silhouette against the seashore. I feel the image could have been improved by cropping around the bird but leaving some space to the left and a bit on the right as you have areas that don t add to the image. 30 A good close-up shot of the spider, although the image appears to be slightly grainy possibly due to cropping. The lighting is even over the spider, only dropping off at the rear. We get to appreciate the many eyes the spider has. 31 Looking at this image we assume the spray of water is from the jet ski, possibly as it has turned around ready to take off over the wave. It makes quite an impressive image. I hope the photographer has taken a few shots as it took off over the wave as it would have been quite spectacular. 32

A very strong shot of the white flower. I like the way the photographer has presented this image. Overall the image has purposefully been softened to emphasise how delicate the flower is. As the viewer moves from the edges of the frame to the centre of the flower the focusing becomes stronger. Exposure and lighting is well handled. 3RD 33 Another underwater image where we see a scuba diver with a torch exploring a wreck of a ship. I like how the photographer has framed the diver to indicate the size of the wreck and how the sea is slowly consuming it. The lighting in these depths would not be good so the photographer has done very well. 2ND 34 As we look at this shot it seems to take us back in time. We see the old fashioned corner store with all the wares in the window, then as you look at the advertisements in the window they appear to be in an era around early to mid last century. Having the shot as a monochrome image add to the feel of that era. 35

A great action shot of the water skier leaning virtually horizontally to the water creating a spectacular spray of water which helped to make the skier stand out from the dark water that is calm. The image is sharp all over. H/C Award 36 I like the sepia toning on this shot as I feel it suits the scene. We see the gentleman making adjustments to the rigging on the animal where bot man and animal are in focus and the background is muted down to reduce any distractions. The lighting is well handled as it appears to be quite a sunny day. 37

When you first see this image our eyes make their way up the old stair they appear to get narrower and our mind start to ponder what is just out of shot at the top of the stairs. Are we walking into danger, we will never know. A well structure and thought out shot. 38 The composition of this shot is very good. In the foreground the jetty is lit up the sun and our eyes move along the jetty to the two people walking towards the boat. As we move past the people the scene gets darker and we see the white wispy cloud that stands out against the dark threatening sky. 39 A lovely shot of the cheetah in the crouched position ready to take off after its prey. We see the concentration in the eyes as it studies it prey waiting for the right time to move. We get the feeling the prey must be a favourite of the cheetah by they way it is licking its lips. 1ST

40 The photographer has panned the camera capturing the bird in flight effortlessly gliding through the air. Panning the camera has caused the background to become blurred allowing the bird to stand out. The bird is sharp all over and lighting is well handled as we see bright areas and dark areas but detail can be see in both. 41 Here is a good example of cropping to show only what is necessary. We don t need to see the person's face as the main interest is on the guitar and the hands. Converting the image to monochrome has taken out possible distraction so our focus is on the subject. 42 Another great shot of the bird in flight. The bird is sharp from one wingtip to the other and the exposure is very good, this is helped by having the background dark. H/C Award 43

I think what makes this shot is the movement of the two female footballers and the ball. The girl on the left is in control on the ball and started to make her move whereas the other girl is concentrating on the ball and anticipating where the ball will be kicked. If everything was stationary the shot would be very static and uninteresting. 44 A very interesting monochrome shot of the lathe. As we look around the image we see the tools used such as the chuck key, spanners etc. We can see from the filings that are spread over the lathe and base that the lathe is used on metal. The photographer has shown enough of the lathe and surrounds for the viewer to appreciate complexity of the equipment. 45 An interesting shot of the dune and surrounding landscape. Conversion to monochrome has resulted in the sand to appear quite dark. You could possibly crop the base slightly which would have made it move as a panorama and emphasised the vastness of the outback. 46

This image has been taken at a different angle to the standard shot of the magpie. I think what adds interest to the shot is the bird looking up to the sky to allow us to get a good view of its head and beak. Having a dark sky has made the magpie stand out. 47 By taking this shot as the trawler has past the photographer it has allowed the viewer to see the rigging and equipment that is on the boat. I feel the image could have been improved by adding more contrast in the water. 48

A great landscape of the mountains. I feel this works really well as a monochrome image. The curves of the mountain edges and the ripples on the slopes of the mountain create subtle variations in the tone of the shot. H/C Award 49 I think the small object inside the ring of smoke from the plane is a hang glider but thought it might have been taken from above and it might be an island. I suspect it is a hang glider. Either way it has created a very different effect. The photographer has timed it well to take it when the plane is heading towards the object. 50 I can see what you are trying to achieve in this shot with the water droplets and spiders web. I think you could have come in closer to isolate these and cut out the other parts of the fence that don t add to the shot. 51 The photographer has come in close showing the farrier in the process of putting on a horseshoe on a hoof. This image works well as a monochrome as we concentrate on the work of the farrier. We see that hands and tool working together. The smoke adds extra impact H/C Award

52 A good shot of the steam train coming down the track. The photographer has positioned themselves to allow the train to move into the frame. As in this case steam trains work really well in monochrome. A tip when reversing images, make sure no writing is shown as it looks odd and gives away what you have done. 53

This is an unusual shot of the harbour bridge and I think it has worked. Here the photographer has used the archway to frame the arch of the bridge but making sure that the security cameras are separated from the arch. By leaving in the walkway to show the public using the bridge. The exposure is handled well considering you have a wide variation of lighting conditions. 54 I have finished commenting on the images and have attached the document. I found the quality of images very good and enjoyed viewing them and writing my comments. I hope your members appreciated my comments. Martin. ~ AWARDS ~ 1ST EYE CONTACT = LINDY TAYLOR
